I'm wondering what specific 'unconstitutional' laws that may have spurred this decision. As for the $150 fire prevention fee mentioned in the article, I'm guessing this area is prone to wild fires?

The ones that made slavery illegal and gave women and minorities equal rights.

Why? Normal taxes might not be enough for the equipment needed to fight these fires... I see planes and helicopters being used to fight fires and the likes... Not to mention special training, hundreds of people on duty when they break out, etc, etc... That is probably a tad (read: huge amount) more expensive than a run of the mill fire department with the tools and skills to contain a fire in a building.

Having 51 states would be pretty cool. 50 states get boring after 53 years. Time for some change. Isn't that what Obama's campaign was all about? Make it happen.

A county of 45,000 who's only economy is a bit of tourism? Yeah, good luck surviving when you're no longer privy to tax revenues from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

So Texas and now California? What's the purpose of secession anyways? Google search won't exactly help out because it's too general Ackad

Texas hasn't talked about secession.

I guess it would be amusing to see them succeed in their goals only to ultimately fail and have no money. Sadly there's probably a lot of people there who don't want to do this and are getting dragged along which kind of reduces any humour that could be gained.

They're breaking away from the State of California, not ascending to the Throne.

This could be good for the country as a whole because California has so much electoral votes and this would reduce that number.

Yeah. 45,000 out of a state of 38,000,000. That'll really put a dent in those electoral votes.

It would take away at least one though. Every state must have at least one congressman. Plus maybe some other counties will join them.

One whole electoral vote? Crap. That's a game changer.

I can't see this having success in itself - but the idea of splitting California between North and South seems to be one that's fairly common for both sides and could wind up happening at some point.  I'm also aware of attempts at forming an independed "Cascadia" in the Pacific Northwest but I can't see that happening.

Just this county becoming a state by itself though no way.

Nowhere in that article does it state political affiliation if any. Suggesting that they are right wing extremists is speculation and not based on fact.Â
