Ok in my Tech class, I have this teacher who if you're the last person to stand up during the pledge of allegiance or don't stand up at all, she deducts points from your grade. I think that's absolutely assinine because first off it's a class of mostly seniors (12th grade), and because where does it say that we have to pledge.

Next time I'm in her class I'm not standing up at all (it's required to graduate so that's why I haven't been messing with her) and if she takes points off my grade I'll report her if I can.

This isn't the only time I've seen an overly patriotic teacher impose the pledge on students and I'm sure some of you OTers have seen it too. So can she do this? All comments and discussion welcome.

Pledge of Alliegence is not required so yes, I would report her. I personally stand for the pledge( and I'm the only person who actually says it out).

edit: actually I would just stand up :?

It's a hell of a lot easier to just stand up and put my hand over my chest for a whole 30 seconds than go through some **** of reporting her

No she can't....uuuugh what court case was that....I don't have my books on me but there was a case back in the day where a mormon kid refused to salute the flag because it was against his religion. Gosh what was that case called. Oh yeah, West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette.

That teacher is just trying to instill some discipline in you. As well as trying to teach you all to have at least some amount of respect for our flag. Instead of trying to be a troublemaker, why not just stand for the minute or so it takes to recite it (you don't even have to say it, just stand up). It's not like it's going to kill you.

No she can't. Report her to you principal or counselor.

Also, don't make an issue with it her in class. She will resent you for it and will be less likely to back down on it. Going to her superiors will force her to stop, and will save her face.

...Its funny to hear people say this "well who cares just do it" yeah thats the easy thing to do, and just let her continue to do something she isnt allowed to do. Since when should it be okay, since when she we just over look stuff like this? Pretty sad responses coming from some people here.

Whenever she pledges she doesn't even look at the flag, she just stares like a dumb dog at the intercom. Last time we were "pledging" I had my hand lazily over my stomach and she says "Your hearts up here Stephen" to which I replied "oh yeah at least I'm looking at the flag". Of course she didn't hear.

Which is why I've been standing up for so long, I have a pretty good deal in the class (seated with friends decent grade). I'm sure a few teachers with more seniority than her would support me.

Yes it does make me feel rebellious that's obviously why. It's also why I publicly protest for Gay rights and against the war in Iraq, does that make me bad?

Thats completely stupid, unless everyone can somehow synchronize standing up

I've heard you might have to at least stand up, but she can't deduct points from your grade, that isn't fair.

But since you are a senior (assuming you are), I wouldn't even bother with it.

The TC didn't want this fight. He was pushed, she kept pushing him, wouldn't leave him alone. Everyman has a breaking point, all he wanted was to be left alone.

They should have left him alone, now they pushed him too far, one war against one woman, a one man war.

I have to side with the "pick your battles" posts. That said:

  1. Think about why you don't stand up. Dislike our nation's current policies? Disagree with the idea of reciting an oath of loyalty? You'd better know in your heart, because eventually someone's going to ask for an explanation.
  2. Be respectful in challenging this. She may be acting outside of her authority, but she has a reason for it, and it's as valid to her as your reason for not pledging.
  3. Discuss it with her privately. Challenging authority is a lot easier on all involved when it's not done in public (though sometimes not as effective).
Being polite and eloquent about this will get you a lot farther than angry ranting. It's your right to do either, but think of it as practice for when you leave school and truly have to live with your actions and their consequences.

Who's says he has to pledge? All he has to do is stand up when everyone else does. He doesn't have to recite it if he doesn't want to, but at least stand out of respect for those that do.

Yet she doesn't have to respect my right to choose whether I want to stand or not? I show my respect by stopping what I'm doing and being quiet.

The fact that she'll reduce my grade for her beliefs is idiotic. How about she deducts points for people who support gay marriage?

Do it and when you do it think of the marines that have died for this country. That way you're not doing it out of obligation but out of respect for those brave men and women who died so you could have the right to choose to salute the flag or not. ;)

Having your rights infringed on is a little different then eating indivdual grapes from a grocery store without paying.

I thought it was OK, you know unwritten law, to test one or two grapes before committing to buying a bunch. Everyone does it.:(

[QUOTE="FrKnPuertoRican"]why do you have to make a fuss about something stupid. Just say the damn pledge of allegiance. Does it make you feel rebellious not to or something?mfacek

...Its funny to hear people say this "well who cares just do it" yeah thats the easy thing to do, and just let her continue to do something she isnt allowed to do. Since when should it be okay, since when she we just over look stuff like this? Pretty sad responses coming from some people here.

reality check. people do stuff all the time they should not be doing.. people eat grapes from the grocery store produce sectionwithout paying for them.. you gonna tackle them and demand they pay for the grapes? sometimes its better to just deal. trying to fight everyone over every little thing will make you miserable.

Having your rights infringed on is a little different then eating indivdual grapes from a grocery store without paying.

meh... some will take it as "mah rights r being violated".. others will see its not worth the fight and stand up. just because you're saying the pledge of alligiance doesn't mean you believe what you're saying.

Required to graduate? What the hell kind of school do you go to?

I have more respect for the US Military than you could possibly know.

That being said, he does not have to stand up. He has a right to choose to be patriotic, just like I have a choice not to like him if he comes off as a douche.

She is deducting points from the LAST person to stand. Even if he stands but is a little late in doing it he loses points. She shouldn't be able to force him to recite it, stand for it, or even look at the flag.

You want to really respect the flag? Then stand up for what thousands of men and women have died for and what the flag stands for....freedom.

Every hear of a thing called freedom of speech?

This isn't North Korea.
