1. He's a representative of the US Congress.

2. He's married.

3. He's married to a high-ranking advisor for the Secretay of State.

The court of public opinion finds Mr. Weiner GUILTY.

And public opinion determines the fate of ALL politicians.

Bill Clinton was president of the US and was married. Yet he managed to avoid resigning. Weiner just didnt have good spin control. Clinton was a master of PR.

At the very least we should stop being surprised by this. The fact is not only is this common among politicians and basically any profession that elevates you to a high position in public perception (thus granting you power and prestige), it's pretty common among everyday marriages as well. I think he should have served out the rest of his term, no reason this would adversely affect his job. Then come the election he could've just neglected to run for another term.

I don't like him personally. But I think the public in general shouldn't care about politicians' personal lives. To me, its the same about caring celebrities personal lives. Who honestly cares who cheats on who? Is it going to ruin your personal life?

If its not directly affecting the work he does as a congressman, the general public has no reason to care. But thats me. The media blew this story out of proportion, as usual.

And honestly, anything Pelosi or Reed says I would take with a grain of salt at best.

Today's politics are really a joke. You can start two wars based on lies and get away unscathed but cheating on your wife becomes your doom. Lol simply pathetic.

I guess when the President of the country calls you out, you got no where to run. Weiner's chances of staying in office shrunk after being criticized by Obama, Pelosi, and Reed. What are your thoughts? He committed no crime but was guilty of poor conduct. Doyou say. "Hey everyone does it, no big deal" or "We should expect more from our elected officials?" I'm going neutral on this.

I think it is absurd. A guy just resigned over a sex scandal in which he had no actual sex. (That we know about yet.) From what I've seen: 1. He broke no laws 2. He did not misuse taxpayer resources or otherwise abuse his office 3. He isn't guilty of hypocrisy by building his career on being a defender of traditional moral values 4. Polling of the people in his district want him to remain Unless there is some other shoe that Obama, Pelosi and Reid know about that hasn't dropped yet (such as sending pictures of his junk to underage girls) I think their pushing him out the door is, frankly, cowardly and stupid. Contrast this with Senator David Vitter who had actual sex with actual prostitutes down in Louisiana which broke laws and not only didn't resign but ran for reelection and won by 20 points or so.

I suspect they just didn't want the distraction. The more people focus on Weiner, the less they focus on things like the republicans plans for SS and medicare. Plus, I think the democrats still want to court the religous voters. Not as diehard about it as the republicans, but Obama does take some time to talk about faith and such from time to time.

That could well be it. At least that's the official reason President Obama gave. (Distraction.) Here's an alternative explanation from the liberal side. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2011/06/last_one_turn_out_the_lights.php#more?ref=fpblg (Sorry, hyperlinking not working.) I'm not sure that I buy the appeal to religious voters angle because I think most folks on the left have written them off as more or less a lost cause in terms of conversion. (Or at least written off evangelical religious voters. Jews and, ironically, Muslims, remain firmly in the liberal camp and Catholics are a swing demographic.)

As is typically the case in these incidents, its his reaction to being "caught" that got him trouble. If he'd just come out at the beginning and said, "yeah, I did it, but its none of your business", he probably could have gotten past it. But, as usual, he starts out denying and trying to cover up and winds up looking like a 3 legged cat trying to cover up his turd on a frozen pond.

Too bad he's resigning. I've enjoyed watching him squirm.

Considering the way he hustled to try and keep this covered up means that it was important to him. What if someone had tried to blackmail him? It could very well have affected his job and it was right and proper that he resigned.

Not gonna argue with his resignation because it's probably well-warranted, but it's pretty ironic that you just described 75% of Congress.

politics and judgement should end at the bedroom door. while posting a picture of his groin may have been in poor taste i fail to see how this dirties his character, unless you hold people to some sort of unassailable standard.
