I would never, ever join a union like that, for the simple reason that I would know that the majority of the Biblical literalists in the thread would not change their mind no matter what argument are made, or what evidence is brought forward. So effectively, you're arguing against a brick wall who will never concede defeat -- at that point IMO, you have to just walk away.MetalGear_Ninty
Actually thats true. I wouldnt hold hope that what I say is heard in such "closed" frames of discussion, meaning a union of no more than 10 people.

Plus (seeing Funky's irritation at some points, I wouldnt be able to handle my nerves as effectively as he did, so I stayed out of it. :P

Interestingly enough, according to blackregiment the bit of the Bible that tells you to give all your stuff to the poor isn't meant to be taken literally. Funny, that.Funky_Llama
That's called picking and choosing and not the only instance from some of the non existent debates we've apparently had (not had).

There is no such thing as 'sin' in religious context pertaining to a supernatural deity. It was made up by humans. Secondly, Jesus was not a real person, but one created by ancient Romans. Joseph from the Old Testament, however, is the non-fictional prototype of the fictional Jesus and certainly "sinned" or committed immoral deeds just like every single person since and before.

[QUOTE="Teenaged"]

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Most denominations understand the use of metaphor and symbolism in the Bible. That does not negate the message that is in the Bible. Originally the Bible was spoken...and as with all pre written documents...it had to be presented in such a way as to be memorable. Plus, the symbolism was understood by the people that used it.

Funky_Llama

I know that.

But the evangelists dont accept any interpretation efforts. For them there is no allegory in the Bible because for them allegory would mean that god was lying.

Interestingly enough, according to blackregiment the bit of the Bible that tells you to give all your stuff to the poor isn't meant to be taken literally. Funny, that.

He has done it with other parts as well.

One day he wanted to present as with the version that "death" in some verse was not a literal death. So much for the bible being 100% literal.

Yeah I'm totally the token atheist. I was added per a request that I made after pointing out the discrepancy in Lansdowne's choice of officers. Oh wells I do my best to keep order in that place and its actually a pretty good union despite some troubles here and there.

Yeah. I will admit that there have been some quality discussions, but recently it's just been a lil too much of the evangelicalism for my tastes.

*glares at blackregiment* The union wont be the same without you Funky_Llama. Actually it will probably start going downhill.

[QUOTE="Teenaged"]

But of course. Symbolism and allegories are the most powerful ways to convey messages and "implant" basic notions to believers. I had a discussion with mindstorm in the AU in which I concluded that it is a necessity that scripture has allegorical use of language.

Much like BR has said himself the Bible speaks to a special audience. Therefore proper means should be used in the foundation and the spread of the relgion.

LJS9502_basic

BR is incorrect. The Bible is ultimately for everyone. That doesn't mean everyone will get it nor want it. But it's for everyone. It is necessary to do some study though if you want to get the most out of it. Taking it literally where it isn't meant to be will only erode faith.

Yeah I meant the people of the time.

Meaning that be it the literature tendencies of the time, be it the folklore and the traditions of that time... all those make up the identity of the people you try to approach.

Of course the allegory itself makes the Bible to survive through the ages and not just at the time when fairy-tales where being told at any instance.

I am sure Tyndale and the Waldenses as well as thousands of others sure wish that was the official position of the Catholic Church before they were burned at the stake and persecuted for simply trying to bring the Bible in plain English to the common man so they could read God's Word for themselves. .

Which does nothing to refute God's message to the world. Oh...and it may surprise you but today...and for some time...the Bible has been translated into English so the common man could read it.;)

Did you start the theological debate between Biblical Christianity and Catholicism by making your own drive-by comments directed at religion sects as a whole...?

I'll repeat myself.

We have danced around the fringes on a few things but I am talking about getting into the heart of the matter, the real meat of the issue, without a lot of posts in between, so nothing is missed.

Oh and by the way regarding your assertion that you have refuted certain minor point I have made, I disagree. You haven't even come close. If fact. The evidence I posted, right from Catholic Church documents, refuted your claim.

Anyway, that was just minor stuff. Let's get into some real meat.

blackregiment

Not meaning to be facetious, but I can't help but laughing at that last sentence. You should have added an exclamation mark for extra comical effect, IMO.

I'll try to explain why I used that reference.

The Bible speaks of spiritual meat from the Word of God. It teaches that when one is new in Christ, they learn the basic doctrines of Christianity, the milk. As they grow spiritually in their relationship with Christ and mature in the knowledge of His Word, in His wisdom, and in His Word, they are fed on spiritual meat. That is why I used that reference. Discussing the deeper doctrines of God's Word is discussing the real meat of Christianity.

Here are some verses that speak of spiritual meat.

Heb 5:12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Heb 5:13For every one that useth milk is unskillfull in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

Heb 5:14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

1Co 3:1And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

1Co 3:2I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able tobear it, neither yet now are ye able.

So the Bible does use symbols after all... :o

No, the Bible is literal; God literally does give you free food. :x

You should have told me that before I devoured my cereal with milk! :x

Good, it wasn't meant to be one. I just thought the italics made it look like there was one when there wasn't. :P

Well, you do get a free hamper if you convert during Ramadan. Some very opportunistic marketing on God's part there.
