Do I "trust" science? I trust that with the exception of the occasional human failing, those who promote science try to follow the dictates of the scientific method. This method is not without problems, of course. A scientific answer is one that rests upon the best observable evidence at the moment, which is almost never the same evidence available in the following moment and that is a problem. Not to mention all the failings of what we consider objective observation. There may well be no end to evidence and so science may never be able to give us even a single conclusive answer. Someone posted all the technology science has given us. They haven't, engineers who have implemented scientific discoveries have, but that is minor quibble. What is not so minor is the impact of that technology. To not see the irony in the fact that not believing in global warming inspired this thread, when that global warming is largely caused by the advancement of our societies into a "modern" age of science, is pretty funny. Without science life would be brutal, will see if with science life will exist at all 500 years from now. I'd say the odds are 50-50 at best.
The scientific approach to discerning the meaning of a play vs. the religious approach:
The scientific mind will observe the costumes and its effect on the meaning of the plot, the style of rope used to pull the curtain up, does it have a meaning in this production? The facial expressions of the actors, is the lead masking constipation, is that relevant? Colors, chorus and props, who manufactured the props, what citywas the factory in, when was the company founded. etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,
The religious mind will quickly deduce from the title and tone what it believes the play is trying to say. It may leave before act one concludes, it may implement what it thinks was the enriching message of the play in its day to day life.
The religious mind may be full of crap, the religious mind actually makes more sense to most people as the path of least resistance. The scientific mind may eventually arrive at a richer meaning of the play, the scientific mind shall probably cease to exist of old age before it exits the theater with an answer. If the scientific mind whispers to the audience member in the next seat (the engineer), the audience member may leave the theater and write a critical opinion about how the lead's masking of constipation made everything clear. This audience member, like the religious mind, may be full of crap.
