Too bad Brad Bird wasn't at Pixar at the time of him making The Iron Giant... That film would have gained massive success if it was in the hands of Pixar. That would have been complete win for both Mr. Bird and Pixar. Not that they don't win as is.. lol

Nerd_Man

I'm not that familiar with Ghibli, but my vote would go to Classic Disney over Pixar, no question.

Classic Disney has tons of amazing films. Some of my favorites will have to go to Pinocchio and Peter Pan.

I've heard Pinocchio looks absolutely amazing on Blu-Ray. I want to check it out. It's definitely one of my favorites.

Agreed. Always liked Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Fantasia, The Junglebook, Robin Hood, The Fox and the Hound, and Aladdin. :D

I really, really can't wait until The Lion King comes out on Blu-ray. I'm buying that and watching it as soon as it's out :D.

Yeah, I'd definitely love to check it out on Blu-Ray, too.

Not to mention Pinocchio gave birth to one (Or possibly THE) of the most recognizable films songs of all time (When You Wish Upon A Star). :D

I keep checking Amazon to see if The Lion King has been announced on Blu-Ray. I refuse to buy it on DVD.

[QUOTE="sammyjenkis898"] I just added them to my netflix queue. Thanks for the recommendations. :) Grave of the Firefless was brilliant, indeed. I found it kind of odd that I didn't cry, though..

I teared up when they showed Setsuko playing by the river  Sometimes I know something is incrediby sad but I don't cry. Other times some stupid dog dies and I bawl my eyes out.

Man, I really need to watch some of these again... Of that list, the most recent one I saw watched was Dumbo and Aladdin (Two more amazing Disney films), but the rest I just haven't seen in ages and my memories towards them are a bit faded... I remember I absolutely ADORED The Jungle Book, Robin Hood and The Fox and the Hound when I was a kid... So maybe I should watch them again sometime.

You might be waiting a while, I read 2011 at that earliest. I bought it last year on ebay, it's impossible to find it new anywhere.

Yeah, I was a huge fan of Robin Hood as a kid, as well as the others. You know, I never really liked The Little Mermaid, but I still recognize that it's a great movie.

Ahh yes, Fantasia.

That scene with Chernabog on Bald Mountain was just amazing.
One of my personal favorite parts in Fantasia was Sorcerer's Apprentice. Magical. Simply amazing.

Well it's not as good as the first one, it's far shorter for a start, but the Firebird section is quite possibly the best piece of animation I've ever seen coupled with one of my favourite classical pieces.

The Ave Maria straight after that is a real contrast to Bald Mountain, it's a really great ending. Ahh who could forget Mickey. They included that in Fantasia 2000, for good reason.

Dreamworks and Dreamworks Animation are two completely different divisions. Disney bought that deal of distributing Dreamworks films last year and yet Dreamworks Animation was not included in the deal, because the Animation branch is completely different from the main company.

Nerd_Man

EXACTLY. That is why I voted Dreamworks. If the topic said Dreamworks Animation then its completely different and I would have definitely voted Pixar. Like I said, it might not be a big deal here at GS, but I was trained to make it a big deal. :\

No, I think it's pretty much a given if you're going to compare Pixar to Dreamworks that you're talking about animation.

In your case, you voted for a completely different company.

To me that implies that Pixar films don't count as "real" movies, which I totally don't agree with. In that case, yes it would be silly to compare them to a "real" studio. But I love animation and consider it just as valid as a live action film so I'm just comparing the movies Pixar makes to the movies Dreamworks makes.

I was not saying Pixar doesn't count as real film. I was saying this thread was about both Pixar and Dreamworks Animation SKG (The TC did not include "Animation SKG", but that's because it's pretty obvious he was referring to that in a thread with Pixar). Dreamworks Animation and the main Dreamworks company are two completely independent companies now.

One thing I realized about it was it just had way too many slapstick gags in order to be funny, which I just do not find funny anymore as I've grown mature. That's also why I've grown tired of Dreamworks (Well, one of the many reasons). Even Disney started to fall for this trap which led to their eventual downfall of traditional animation (I'm happy they're bringing it back though with The Princess and the Frog). In a way these are the types of films that gave animation a bad name over the years. Because they began to stupify and rely on slapstick humor just so the kids would want to see them. The unfortunate effect was that these films mostly appealed to kids, and thus the kiddy label for animation was born.
In a way, Pixar saved my interest for animation over the years. They've continually produced animated films that other companies just don't anymore. They have some sort of magical ability of making films that didn't feel tacked on that both kids and adults can enjoy shamelessly. I'm glad that Pixar is becoming more of a rebirth of animation just how Walt was in his years, and bringing the Disney company back to old roots.

Chew on this:

Dreamworks makes better horror movies.

chessmaster1989

As opposed to the vast library of Pixar horror movies? :?

Toy Story 3: The Revenge of Woody

Finding Nemo 2: The Curse of the Frying Pan

That's twisted.

I'm a bit of an animation snob. I will pretty much only go see Pixar movies in the theatre, and I only really see things like Ice Age and Madagascar (which are both pretty good) at home on DVD.

The first step to determining which side to choose in something like this is to see which side made Toy Story. If neither side did, then you must go on to more complex matters.

Let's see if this applies to this argument. Oh, Pixar made Toy Story! That means they win everything. There you go.

Discussion over.:D

Did anyone post that Pixar vs Dreamworks picture? The one where Dreamworks characters all make that smile? Anyway, Pixar by a million miles.

Man, I love that picture. Someone post that! (Too lazy to find out if someone else did.)

Easily Pixar. Dreamworks' output has ranged from awful to mediocre to above average. Pixar are generally above-average.

[QUOTE="sammyjenkis898"] I've heard Pinocchio looks absolutely amazing on Blu-Ray. I want to check it out. It's definitely one of my favorites.

I don't see why it would look much different. after all it's cell animation. it's not like there are textures or other fine details that you'd be missing.
