[QUOTE="FragStains"]From an architectural standpoint that is one of the gaudiest, over developed, and disheartening cities I've seen. FragStains

why? its not in america?

I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. But to answer your "Why?" question...Did you look at the pictures? The buildings all look the same; there is no diversity or original thinking the the design, they are all spaced way too close together; without thought to usage, the heavy ornamentation is quite out of place for the region; it's looking like Las Vegas II.

Architecture for architecture's sake is a bad move.

they all look awesome to me

There's a lot of misinformation floating around in this thread. Dubai and the UAE are not representative of Arab oil producers. Not to mention the reason oil is so expensive is because its traded as a commodity and then taxed by the federal government. I think when some people see foreign countries doing well they automatically have to find a way to put them down(not necessarily you, Knuckleball). To the contrary I think westerners should celebrate Dubai as a place the rest of the middle east can look up to as a place of economic and cultural development.

Dubai is a beautiful city. If they keep up development like this, It really will be the city of the future. It puts New York's development to shame. I wish other middle-eastern cities would pick up like that, maybe it will start a trend, help restore the middle-east to it's former glory.

They did increase the cost of oil, simply because they use so much of it right now... just as oil has peaked.

Everything there is powered by oil... they are using it up ridiculously fast. Hell, they have an indoor ski hill, in the middly of a desert.

Don't blame the oil companies, because everywhere oil has peaked, and now oil is only going to go down in quantity, and therefore up in price. It's actually good they are raising the price though, it's discouraging cars and therefore saving the planet.

See my last post on page 14 though to see why Dubai is a terrible place.

A guy at my school who went there on vacation with his family was supposed to stay at a 5-star hotel. But there was some error with the room reservation so he and his family was moved to that 7-star hotel instead. Poor him :P

Secondly, the money used to pay for all this was stolen from the citizens... all of the money from the oil in those countries goes to only a few people. The workers get paid nothing, and live in poor "developing" nations... they live like the stereotyped African slave.

awsss

only a few people actually live in Dubai. the workers just get temporary citizenship until they're done with construction.

Why? Part of having an improving civilization is to take what works and then improve upon it with your own technologies. Much of the "Western" government is a complete ripoff of more ancient empires such as the Roman Republic. We are by no means original.

It's because of places like Dubai that our planet is going down hill.

Sure, those building are nice and all, but they are made by slaves in all practicality, who get paid only a few dollars an hour for extremely dangerous work.

Secondly, the money used to pay for all this was stolen from the citizens... all of the money from the oil in those countries goes to only a few people. The workers get paid nothing, and live in poor "developing" nations... they live like the stereotyped African slave.

Thirdly, they are tossing around energy from oil like it's an unlimited resource. They have a god damn indoor ski hill. In the middle of a god damn desert. WTF?

Lastly, it's not a city, just a tourist attraction. The only the rich citizens that are in the oil business can afford to even live there. The workers live in small town around Dubai, poor as all hell.

We sit thinking how wonderful this is, and yet we wonder why our planet is screwing up so quickly?

awsss

AGREED!

see, not all Arab countries are bad. I hear UAE has done quite a bit in promoting understanding between the West and the Islamic world. If i had to take a guess, i would say UAE is the most moderate and most pro-U.S. Arab country.

homoism is just wrong, just my 2 cents + what does that have to do with "stuck in medieval", oh wait you mean they are Muslims oh ok

Fail for assuming Medieval = Muslim. Although the UAE legal system is progressive for a Middle Eastern state, it still retains old Sharia laws. Sharia = Medieval.

It does look crazy but i can see it failing like the ones in china are, i can't see them finding enough people with that amount of cash to fill the city. China is doing this and thier skyscrapers are virtually empty, they're all for show for the olympics. One of their top hotels that had room for a few 100 had about 20 residends and about 3x as many staff. And they have whole towns which have been built but only have a handful of a population.

BTW you missed off that hotel where all of the floors can rotate by themselves.

Wow, utter craziness. Can you say "Olympics 2020"?

Those huge buildings are insane. It's scary to be at the top of the Empire State Building, I can't imagine being at the top of a biulding 3 times its size. Count me out.

I would move there, so count me in ;) Living costs over there aren't THAT bad. A very nice luxorious apartment for US $$109,000. I think it would be worth it to live there. And with Dubailand being built, there's no doubt it'll be the #1 tourist destination in the entire world.

I was displeased reading some comments about my country. What do you know about us? Just because we follow a religion, we are medieval? I want to prove you wrong, so ask me any questions you might have. And to mingo, please do not insult Arabs, I doubt you personally met any. ok I know some of us are real jerks, but we do have good people.
