Story.

Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Now that there's comedy gold! It's too bad we don't have such a law down here, I think it'd put quite a few pundits under from both sides of the aisle!

Note: The US Channel can still be carried, they're just banned from domestic broadcast.

The irony of this is that Harper is technically Conservative.Though he's pretty Liberal by American standards.

Good stuff, though. Don't need their terrible programming to seep into my country.

good call.

"a project within the University of Maryland, found that Fox News viewers were more likely to be misinformed on a number of domestic issues than other news consumers are."

I don't get why this is news worthy. Fox has always been allowed to be broadcast here, just not on public channels because those channels are government run and as such they do their best to keep lies out. Naturally this prevents Fox from being shown on them. It's not like you can't watch Fox here if you want a laugh, I know I've watched Beck and Bill a few times when I was bored.

You obviously haven't read the article. Fox News isn't legally banned from broadcasting, they just won't because they're banned from lying.

The only thing that's banned is lying. Therefore, Fox News refuses to move into Canada.

Based on that study that showed Fox News viewers to be less informed than people who don't watch news, I'd say that they were being pragmatic and I love me some pragmatism.

Lol. Harper is further left on the scale than Obama, and still considered "right of center" in Canada. I'm all for freedom of the press, but only when facts are being reported.

This regulation prevents the citizenry from being lied to. That is a reasonable regulation. Unless you want news networks reporting on facts pertinent to your daily life (not just Hollywood drama) and not telling the truth about it.

Well I guess that rule would ban most news stations. Heck probably the only news station allowed in canada is this:

They could and should verify their reports, indeed they have a moral duty to do so. But I think if the government makes it illegal for news broadcasters to lie that runs the risk of having the government networks falsely accused of lying.

I like that they're being consistent in banning programs that lie, rather than just going by party lines.
