[QUOTE="Theokhoth"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]So then this isn't a religious issue now?LJS9502_basic

Since when was religion an issue in public schools? It's not even allowed in the United States' schools. :|

Thus society can make laws that stop the wearing of veils. See how that works.

Not being allowed to wear them in public schools is not the same as not being allowed to wear them period. I can't take a Bible to a public school; this doesn't mean Bibles can be banned. See how that works?

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="Theokhoth"] Yes, because criminals, now that masks are banned, will all stop wearing them when they commit crimes. :| Otherwise, what's there to fear? If a person will commit a crime in a mask then they'll do it whether it's legal or not. If they're not gonna commit a crime, why ban it? And YOU assume that every woman who wears this is forced to do so, when that is not the case. Have you ever been to a mosque? Ever spoke to a woman wearing a veil? I assure you, some just like it.Theokhoth

No I assume that the culture takes away choice. Don't tell me what I think. And again.....you're not allowed to go around in public masked. Masks are generally put on by criminals right before entering a target so they don't get stopped for...well wearing a mask.;)

How 'bout you don't tell me what I think? :| And yes you can go out in public masked. I've done it. I've been with people who've done it. There is no law saying you cannot do it, at the very least in my state. And you skipped the point. Banning masks won't stop criminals from wearing them. Just like they don't now, if masks actually are illegal. ;)

You've already stated that some women want to dress that way. So it's not assumption. It stops criminals from walking around in public wearing a mask...yes it does. No one walks around here wearing masks...except halloween. But they cannot enter stores etc wearing them.;)

However, covering one's face is not the same....

Yes, and some women do want to dress that way. However, earlier you said it's not important to me that some women are forced to wear them. That is telling me what I think. ;) Criminals do not walk around in masks now anyway. :| You said yourself: They wait to put one on until just before entering the store. And privately owned businesses can make whatever rules they want; the policies of a store does not national law make. ;)

You've advocated from the first that some women like them. Thus it's not an assumption. Second...you made this a religious issue but only when you pick and choose it to be one. You totally negated the fact that full facial covering is a problem by talking about hats and glasses which are not the same. Then you brought Mexicans into the discussion...never mind the fact they lived in parts of the US first. Bottom line is if cultural wear is important to someone...then they should live in countries that allow it. NOT expect other countries to adapt to their culture.

So how are they planning on enforcing this law? Fines? Arrest?

Finally. Excellent decision, I am pleasantly surprised. This should be passed in all of the EU.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] I took issue with the necessarily since it implies there is a problem with some women being forced to wear them.....but that is not of import to him.LJS9502_basic

I said they are not all necessarily forced to wear them. :| Meaning: Just because some are forced to wear them doesn't mean they all are.

Ah but if you stop the practice....you give women freedom that the men have.

This arguement never makes sense to me.

"We shall give women more freedom by making it illegal for women to wear certain clothing".

Wait a minute....

If I'm breaking the law, why do I care if it's illegal to wear a veil?

People keep stating it's illegal for you to wear a ski mask in public but that doesn't stop robbers from doing that. Again, this makes no sense. Criminals will do it regardless of if it's illegal because THEY'RE CRIMINALS.

Gee, maybe it narrows down the people who are criminals to the ones wearing the ski masks.Normal citizens won't be doing so, which makes the police's job that much easier.

I was for this at one point, but I can't help but think this is just a part of the insidious anti-Islam sentiment that's creeping into government thinking in Europe. There's an argument to made for its banning for sure, but it's never caused any problems before - it seems borne more out of irrational fear more than anything else and serves only to reinforce irrational public thinking whilst further alienating Islam in the process. The issue of women's rights I do agree with however - I'm just not sure this is the right way to go about tackling that particular issue.

Freedom of religion and expression.

(unless you're Muslim)

Not a lot of religions commands one to cover one's facial identity. Not saying I'm against it, but you can understand it within some cultures and modern society.

I don't think we need special laws to render people 100% identifiable at all times. Baseball caps and sunglasses could be used to hide your identity... false moustaches, makeup and children's masks likewise, but nobody would consider banning all of those. Sure, drastic times call for drastic measures and all that, but I can't help but feel this is more about making a point than public safety. I'm sure this is going to end up in some sort of more palatable compromise.

It's another stupid law against Islam and Muslims.

Watch out guys, that Muslim women might be hiding a Rocket Launcher under her head scarf!

It should only be banned for attractive arab women. Some of them can be pretty hot, although you would never know because their husbands are trying to hide them for themselves under those veils.
