"TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgia called for international intervention on Monday and pulled its battered forces back to the capital, as Russian troops pushed deep into its territory, ignoring Western pleas to halt.

"The Georgian army is retreating to defend the capital. The Government is urgently seeking international intervention to prevent the fall of Georgia," a Georgian statement said.

President Mikheil Saakashvili said Russian forces had taken control of Georgia's main east-west route, effectively bisecting the country. He urged Georgians to stay home and not panic."

Do you think someone will step in? I sure hope not.

Any country stepping in ( especially a NATO country ) will cause huge international tension. We have to let this ride out and hope Russia pull sout sooner rather then later.

Looks like things are getting bad for Georgia and from other threads, it seems many OTer's are taking this as the Poland of WWIII.

Russia is going to be stressing the U.N. if they keep ignoring pleas to stop, but any actual intervention will cause a huge international uproar. As long as Russia doesn't overdo it, I doubt there'll be any intervention.

Unfortunatly, it seems so because no one wants to interfere or wants to be the first because they may be alone and gain new and old grudges while the nation still falls.

Russian troops will be in Tbilisi in a few days. Mark my words. And the West won't do anything about it. Saakashvili and his government will go ingloriously into exile, while a pro-Russian administration gets set up. The Georgian army is likely to get disarmed, with the Russians possibly forcing quotas onto how many men it can recruit and how many heavy weapons it may have.

And the West will forgive all of this. Unfortunately, since Europe gets about a quarter of its gas from Russia, the EU won't want to do anything about it.

It sounds just like the storyline in Ghost Recon... except that the US won't be coming to help in any way.

Doubt it. The Turks haven't done very much to provoke the Russians, perhaps beyond supplying Georgia with some electricity during this conflict.

The Russian possibly certainly can invade Turkey, but it's not going to benefit the Russians in any way whatsoever.

Sort of. Georgia attacked rebels in South Ossetia, a region within their country that borders Russia. Some of the casualties included Russian citizens.

I can only imagine this would turn out to be identicle to WWII where G.B. and France warned Germany that pushing into Poland would cause the two nations to declare war. Operation "Case White" all over again

That's another "sort of true" statement. The South Ossetians did vote for independence, but they're not recognized by any foreign government (including Russia) due to fraudulent voting. Only ethnic Ossetians were allowed to vote. All other races and ethnicities living in Ossetia were denied the right.

Well that's hardly surprising, given that the CIA financed Georgia's so-called "Velvet Revolution" in order to secure the Ceyhan oil pipeline. Suck-***-Willy, er I mean "Saakashvili" is for all intents and purposes just another little US puppet.

I don't think Russia would have taken action if they anticipated a large response.

In fact i think they were surprised by Georgia.

I disagree. If 100% of the world's governments point to a region of a map and all say "that's part of Georgia", then I'm going to say control isn't required for Georgia to lay claim.

Nope. Russia acknowledges that it's moved into Georgian territory for "peacekeeping" purposes, so the 100% is intact.

The fact that Russia's moved beyond Ossetia and continues deeper into Georgia suggests you'd have won that bet.
