I'm tempted to say the United States just out of pure patriotism.

But I'll go with the US because its establishment as the first full constituational democracy. One of the most enlightened political systems of all time.

WOW!!

you must live in 1 think walled bubble!! usa is a beatiful fuked up place

american music and the landscape is number 1

the politics dnt even kid yourself..... seriously

I'm not closed minded, but it's nearly impossible to say that the US doesn't have the most enlightened politcal system in the World. We were the first country that allowed people to pick their ruler, every other nation had theirs pressed upon them to that point. So no, I don't like in a "think walled bubble" and the politics aren't THAT bad. The system is best ever created.

read this before you say americans 'invented' democracy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_democracy

In actual fact England was the world's first modern parliamentary democracy and consequently many constitutional, governmental and legal innovations that had their origin in England have been widely adopted by other nations.

remember england is also why you exist ...

and before you ask im not english and i love america

First parlamentary democracy, yes, but you still had a Monarch, the US was the first nation to ever allow their citizens to pick their national executive. The British weren't.

ooo yeah citizens right, you mean white people were allowed to vote. I mean white men no1 else

and even that is corrupt

though the monarch was such in title only. the true power came from the elected officials.

Monarchs have little power anyway, the Prime Minister has the power so i dont think arguments involving Monarchs should really get involved.

Well I suppose MOST of you would say USA (SHOCKING news!), but the US haven't effected the world more then a century or so.

The Roman Empire however is one of the few nations that have altered the future for mankind for centuries. It was one of the first republics, organized army, great architects and engineers (Colosseum, aqueduct and sanitation systems), they connected the rest of the known world with roads and harbours. Quite an influence on every day life, even today.

On second place I'd say the British Empire for obvious reasons..

There really isn't one. But off the top of my head I would say The Roman Empire, the Persian Empire (at one point), the British Empire, and the USA.

All cominant military forces, and all had an large effect on the neighboring nations around them.

Somebody forgot the Mongol Empire, Holy Roman Empire and Abbasid Caliphate. The Almoravids also may deserve a place amongst those.

The Roman Empire. Reasons? Main ones: It lasted for a thousand years and conquered much of the known world, thus having a huge influence on most people today.

It's not the US...I'm sorry, but The States is not the best by a long way. Woop, big Army, big economy, but then you also have a big population. One leads to the other. 'Why isn't China as good as the States then?' It has too many people. The United States is the bowl of porridge that was just right. But having the best Army/economy/land mass does not make you the best country/empire.

National debt is HUGE, there are millions of poor people, your health system is a joke and you're all dying of larditis. Not to mention you're egotisitical, self indulgant and feel invincible.

That's not to say I don't like you all though. For the most part. I genuinely want to meet you someday, because you are nice people, but ruin it by being all high and mighty.

Britain isn't the best as we're all going to **** as well. Our government doesn't know how to run a country and is so far up The States' arse that it's hard to see where we end and you begin.

As for the best? I'd say Switzerland. Or the Netherlands. They have got it good.

I am going to have to go with China, and anyone who does not realize that they are still the super power to this day is ignorant.

I am also quite fond of how the Brits managed to spread themselves around the world, too bad they spread themselves too thin.

No offense intended, but the blind support for America really just shows how naive you all are and that you actually believe your own governments propoganda. America has only existed for several hundred years and is already struggling, it's hated by a very large number of countries in the world and has killed more people and caused more unnecessary wars than any country in existence. It's healthcare systems a joke and the education system is the laughing stock of most civilised countries.

P.S In response to the comment about Britain being in debt to America at the end of WW2, it's probably got something to do with the fact that you came into the war nearly 3 years late, kinda like WW1 as well.

But it's not "Greatest Britain" :P

Is now,

I just emailed both Gordon Brown and the Queen.

They can't say no to that.

But on topic, the British Empire tied with Thailand for me.

Why Thailand?

The only country in south east Asia to never be colonised. Strikes me as a pretty big achivement.

I can't believe people are actualy saying USA:roll:

What do American kids get taught at school? First history lesson - planet earth rotates around North America - Americans are a special race of humans - American guns never run out of ammo - American action heros never die, even though they get shot 600 times.

If you look at the history of planet earth - the USA is not even worth two milli-seconds.

The greatest nation on earth was either the British Empire and its commonwealth or the Roman empire.

muppet1010

this made me rofl.

comeon...the british empire? And as for "earth rotating around N America" I think the British were far more arrogent during their imperial days than any other nation then, now, or in the past.

and once again some poor naive guy thinks america is gun crazy...

but I agree it would be a great place and time to live. I love England, especially Oxford. Eagle and Child FTW!

Do you actually know anything about the british empire? sure they were arrogant... only nation on earth to put "great" in their name... But they were the absolute undisputed power in there time. What America has to day absolutely pales in comparison to the British Empire's hey day.

as I said Britain had control... that means they forcibly invaded and ceased control of more than 1/4 of the earths land mass. That is way, way, way beyond America's capabilities. And America will never be able to achieve that. And during that time Britain had the military power to crush many rebellions, the navy to as the song goes "rule the sea's"... What the British Empire did was mad. And something like it most likely won't ever be achieved again.

there is more to being great than dominating the most amount of foreign countries.

If that was true then the US would definately be insignificant since, well, we really only dominate two at the moment (Iraq and Afghanistan) and not that well, I might add.

The fact is, however, that the US has the greatest "potential energy" if you will. Right now, and in the past, our presidents and politcal system havent set a great example and right now our international relations with the rest of the world are FUBAR.

But I sincerely believe that if one nation can unite the world, establish a common currency and market, and silence any threat to peaceful nations I think it is the US. I dont say this out of arrogence or pride, either, I think if we get a good leader, cabinet, and congress and the American people are willing to sacrifice a bit of their lifestyle we could make the world a paradise for just about everyone willing to accept it.

Either we are naive, or you are resentful.

America has only existed for several hundred years and is already struggling

False. I think you need to look up thaw word "struggle", or you are vastly misinformed about economics, military, and politics.

it's hated by a very large number of countries in the world

Only the ones that think we are doing wrong to them.

and has killed more people and caused more unnecessary wars than any country in existence

More than Imperial Britain, the Roman Empire, Mongolian Empire, or Nazi Germany, or Soviet Union?

Do you even know your history?

It's healthcare systems a joke and the education system is the laughing stock of most civilised countries.

Education system is decent, though lacking, true. But I suggest you learn a bit more about health-care from more informed and trust-worthy sources. No, Micheal Moore does not count.

P.S In response to the comment about Britain being in debt to America at the end of WW2, it's probably got something to do with the fact that you came into the war nearly 3 years late, kinda like WW1 as well.

Wrong...again. Before the US entered the war, the US lent Britain loads of money, ammunition, equipment, weapons and ships to fight the Germans. After the war ended, we gave them money to rebuild, and helped rebuild Germany as well as Japan.

To start Im British and although quite patrioticly I do believe britain has had more power than any country has ever had and has had the greatest economy of any empire, I cannot deny the great empires of the past before the British empire (french, german, mongols and rome etc the list goes on) but I have never considered our rebelious cousins in the USA to be one of them. Although throughout time all previous superpowers were thought of as complete and utter **** no one has went out of their way more so than America to be hated in the world. Undeniably the worlds biggest power right now is America (Only invadable by China as by sheer numbers they would make a mockery of any army in the world) and few nations rival it economically, few Americans are able to realize what every nation before it has already learned and that is every super power is succeeded eventually and unfortunatly our cousins in America will never go down in the history books as a great empire, they will be remembered due to their toss pot of a government and shambles of a legal system to be a selfish and greedy nation with an unbelievable superiority complex). On a funnier note I was suprised to find out the amount of people in Britain aswell as America who thought America invented the car.

Just for the record I have visited America several times and although it is a concrete jungle, the people are generally some of the friendliest in the world. (Canada and Australia are at the top of my friendliest people right now, I love our commonwealth brothers)

I'd say the USA has the best possibilities so long as the people are united and have something to stand for, lately that hasn't been the case sadly.

I'm also partial to Ancient Israel... It did really well to be such a small strip of land I'd think.

BYE BYE

Its COLOUR not COLOR, PETROL not GAS, FAVOURITE not FAVORITE and the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced ZED not ZEE (English 101)

Since my full argument would take up pages and i don't have the time to type that i am only going to inform you on your last bit of information.

The English language has evolved over here, things are spelled the way we pronounce them for the most part.

We say Color exactly like it is spelled

We say Favorite exactly like it is spelled

We say Gas because it is short for Gasoline which by definition is A volatile mixture of flammable liquid hydrocarbons derived chiefly from crude petroleum and used principally as a fuel for internal-combustion engines.

And it is pronounced ZEE.

I see no reason to add a "U" where it does not belong. Our language has evolved to suit our needs, yours has stayed relatively the same. There is no right or wrong, we are different cultures it doesn't make your opinion right it doesn't make my opinion right.

Depends what you mean. In terms of advancements then many of hte ancient nations like China, Egypt, Greece, India.

A couple hundred years after Rome fell and Europe was in the dark ages, the Islamic Arab Empire stretched all the way from Spain to the borders of China and India. That was very very big, and a lot of advancements took place in mathematics and science at that time. It was called the Golden Age of Islam. They were even militarily more powerful than the Europeans who attempted to take the Holy Land in the Crusades and failed. Eventually they weakened due to Mongol conquests and the rise of the Ottoman Empire.

If you mean purely on conquests and empire, ill say The Imperial British Empire of later 19th century which owned 1/5th of the world and perhaps the Imperial French Empire which owned around 1/10th of the world.
