I don't understand why you guys are compaing entertainment (film, games, literature) with the bible. You're comparing things that were made in the past century or so with something that has been around for multiple centuries. There is a reason why The Bible has withstood the test of time.

It's clearly not because an increasing number of people are starting to realise that life isn't so bad anymore and the hope of heaven isn't needed as much.

Or maybe those passages are reflecting a commonly held belief that the earth was flat. I'm gonna go ahead and say that the authors of those passages literally thought the earth was flat considering it was the norm at the time..

Frattracide

How many times do you need to be told that people have known for thousands of years how the Earth is shaped?

Yet the church maintained it was flat.

I thought they maintained that it was a random orb in a geocentric universe :??

But the answers aren't there. There's no empirical evidence in that book, and that is proof. Without physical evidence, you may as well be talking about another work of fiction. Seriously, the only thing that is going to confirm that God exists (and that the Biblical view of God is correct) is if God makes a tangible appearance and states that the Bible is correct.pianist

No it did not. The Church NEVER taught a flat earth as an official statement; it WAS believed by some officials a VERY long time ago, but it was never taught, practised or official.

*facepalm*

You are looking at it really wrong. The earth doesn't literally have corners, its referring to the cultural centers of humanity. ie, The English Empire had a stretched to the four corners of the earth.

Its not literally shaking the world foundations, that's just a figure of speech. For example, " The offensive use of nuclear weapons shook the foundations of the world." Its not literally shaking the world, its a major event or disaster.

My friend, I do not believe in anything. I am a skeptic. I ask for evidence. I am not open minded, I am critical minded.

Because believing that there is an omnipotent being that sets up rules for you to follow and is always infinitely better than you in every possible way is quite the ego boost.

Dracargen

To 'know' the answer to every question, and to expect a reward for obedience in life after death is a great comfort. And it IS an ego boost for us to believe that the creator of the universe has a vested interest in our well-being and looks out for us. It makes you feel special - unfortunately, that feeling may well be based on nothing more than a fantasy.

Its done some bad things for humanity. Inquisitions, manifest destiny, the Holocaust, a lot of the crap in the Middle Ages, witch hunts, sectarian violence in the middle east, the Pakistan/India thing (I think), Darfur, there's quite a lot of stuff I could list that I could blame religion for.

The the dude comparing games to the bible: You're comparing something that has been around for a few decades to something--the bible--that has been around for a million years. Fail.

Where does it prove that the world is flat? How do you know it just isn't interpeted wrong? It wasn't written in English, you know.

I though it was believed the earth was in an ocean supported by pillars, covered by a dome.

Frattracide

Of course you base this belief on metaphors we still use this day.

Did you read the responces to your copy/pasted verses?

Religion is based on proof because there are things that really happened! Jesus was real. Look at the pyramids in Egypt, who the heck built those?

pianist

The Egyptians. At the time they were worshipping a number of different gods. I fail to see how that proves Christianity...

The fact that there is no way they could have build those pyramids witht he materials they had. You need cranes for something like that.

He's sure doing a crappy job of converting other religions then...

Doesn't have to convert. Majority of people are christian, and majority rules, my friend.

Fail.

Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism to become the world's largest single religious denomination, according to L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper.timesonline

The Timesonline is a biased website. I thought everyone knew this.

As is the Vatican newspaper and every other news outlet in the world?

Here you go, proof of the lack of gods existence. But you all knew that, right?

kirk4ever

i lost respect for him after he said "religion is BS" atleast 10 times.... i mean i firmly believe in respecting others opinions but why attacks others for their beliefs...what has religion done to him? i can also easily debate with him and also pwn and BUt he will pwn me back and it will go baCK AND FORTH 100 TIMES...THAT is the point of religion to me...to have faith and you say why be a slave of a magical being that does not exist? well i am not a slave..i just follow someone who hasnt told me to work hard or do anything bad..he/it/she has told me to follow good morals and help pthers and care for my friends and etc....

Pshhh, you didnt even watch the whole thing. Despite saying religion is BS several times, he actually has valid points that have been mentioned several times in this discussion. Such as, if god is so great, why does the world suck?

define "the world sucks".....

this is mans free will and what he has chosen....this is the path he has walked..the rule he has followed...if god fixed everything that would be a perfect world and then creation would have no point...besides as i said we can argue over and over and reach nothing....

You know, by world sucking I mean everything that was mentioned in the video you could have watched but apparently decided not too.

I don't think he's going to have room in hell for me with all the people pretending he doesn't exist. Sooshy
I assure you, if God is a picky as the Bible makes out, there'll be plenty of room.

Sooshy

That isn't how it works bro. You've been flaming people here from the get go, and I think you know full well you're doing it. You're supposed to be consciously avoiding that. If you're not, you're not really honouring your religious beliefs. In fact, you're doing your religion a great disservice by portraying it in an extremely negative light, which will drive others further away rather than bring them towards it.

We shall see. I would humbly suggest that God probably doesn't like the idea of you taking pleasure in the damnation of others.

haha, who says religion instills morals? You can do what you like as long as you don't die before you say sorry for it.

In religion there are no such things as answers, only theories. In my opinion I'd rather not base my life around a theory.

They used ramps and rollers to move cut blocks up to the top of the pyramids, nothing divine there. Bad luck.

[QUOTE="pspdseagle"]HERE THE EVIDENCE:FAITH what the heck has religion ever done to you guys? Video_Game_King

Wow.

The Holocaust? How in the world can anyone possibly blame the Holocaust on religion? Hitler didn't even follow a specific religion (although he like Arianism)!

There are three things I could blame atheism for, with your logic, and they would overlap all 123 bad things religion has ever done.

Religion was still used as motivation. How can you possibly say that the witch hunts, the Inquisitions and the Sunni/Shiite controversy aren't heavily saturated with religion?

Dude I may be a believer in God, but the examples you are giving out would never be able to convince a skeptic. What does Jesus and the Pyramids have to do in common?

[QUOTE="el_carl"][QUOTE="Sooshy"][QUOTE="el_carl"]This thread, like most religious threads, fails. You cannot prove or disprove a religion. A religion is based on faith, and faith is something that you cannot prove. End of discussion.Sooshy

Oh, that's rich! No wonder why you're the lead religion professor at Harvard...oh wait. Yeah, you're just some dude on a gaming forum, aren't you? Discussion not ended.

What was so hard to understand? I used simple logic, which everyone should be familiar with. Religion isn't based on proof, its based on having faith. Also, when you insult me, try to give a reason for it.

I'm not insulting you. You just try to make yourself sound more important than everyone else with your "Discussion ended" crap.

I wasn't trying to make myself seem more important. I'm just tired of people asking for proof for something that has no proof. Christianity is based on the fact that Jesus died so we can go to heaven. You can't prove Jesus died so we can go to heaven, so you can't prove or disprove Christianity. There's no proof for it, or against it.
