[QUOTE="greenprince"]95 people admitted that they were racist.:?LJS9502_basic

They're honest. Most people have some form of bias whether it is obvert or subconcious. There are very few people that are truly objective. Most people don't tolerate overt racism, but hidden forms of bias exist everywhere. I feel safer knowing that people at least acknowlege that as opposed to stick their heads in the sand and tell everyone how open minded they are.

Well....some people are that open minded.;)

It's possible, but unlikely. I think humans tend to lean toward familiarity and shared values. We are dividers by nature - it's how we organize thing. We perceive differences. Now certainly there is a difference between being racist and being biased. I think most people aren't racist - in the sense that they aren't members of the KKK or view other groups as being less than human. But I think people do have some subtle or subconscious biases about different groups. It may be as simple as being uncomfortable around a group of youths of a different race to disliking certain forms of culture that seem different to you.

[QUOTE="CptJSparrow"]LJ, do I need to acquiesce to society's standards of 'good' and 'cool' as well?LJS9502_basic

No...those are subjective...not objective. Regarding race....pigment, physical characteristics, and geographical ethnicity are all used to determine race. Not the same as fads.

Categorizing people into races based on their phenotype is as subjective as the majority's belief in their status of being cool. Biologically, I am as alike to someone of my skin color, provided that they are not in my immediate family, as one of any other.

I don't personally like racial cIassification. However, you asked about society. I think humans are merely human.

I do as well... and I inquired about what makes society's belief objective to you rather than subjective.

[QUOTE="CptJSparrow"] There is some criteria for determining if someone is emo. Would you say that a dissenting opinion of what an emo is would contain less truth because it is not a mainstream belief?LJS9502_basic

I believe there is some science behind racial cIassification....but not emo.

Because one deals with superficial genetic variation and the other by fashion trends? These are merely different by different replicators and science can be used to describe variation by either mechanism -- the meme or the gene.

Actually, I like diversity. I find other cultures fascinating and I like learning about them. I'd always wished to have the money to travel and experiene the differences on a day to day level. Being emersed in the experience so to speak.

I'm not racist. But, honestly, if I was in a room full of black or Mexican people (me being the only white person), it would feel different, more awkward, than a room full of white people.

Fashions change, (the same individual can change fashion daily)....genetics not so much. While it may be superficial...it is categorized differences. And as you know...mankind needs labels.

The appearance of what some people deem 'races' owes to the phenomenon of genetic variation... and I am not talking about someone changing fashion daily, but the appearance of the concept of cliques and its subjective similarities to the subjective concept of races. Classifications are subjective, whether they describe genetic phenomena or sociological phenomena. You classify tasks every day into 'easy', 'hard', 'not worth it', et cetera, while another may deem them differently.

Want to define 'objective' in the sense that you are using it? Perhaps that is where the difference lies.

Nope.

I think the question of "are you racist" ultimately boils down to: do you care about other human beings enough so as to disregard each individual's differences from yourself and condemn what you deem to be their faults compassionately. And this is on a universal scale, not "forgive so and so a race for such an such a characteristic".

I tend to favor being around white people. Really dosent strike me as anything immoral either. I could spend the rest of my life around white people exclusively and I would be totally fine.

I'm not racist, but I do stereotype. Everyone does when they first meet a person, it's one of the basic mechanisms of the human brain, drawing on previous experience when dealing with a new situation.

I don't, however, hold an irrational disregard or hatred for an entire race of human beings.

This is a trick question. Everyone is racist, to a degree.

There are three types of people in this world pertaining to racism.

1. The people who claim they are not racist. These people are just lying to themselves, plain and simple. See type number 2 to demonstrate why I think these people are somewhat ignorant.

2. "casual" racists. I hesitate to call these people racist because they never act on it, but these are the "grey" thinkers out there. They realize that stereotypes, like rumors, are all true at some level. They might have never ever used the word n***** or s**** to describe a black or hispanic person respectively, but they do realize that such stereotypes do exist.

3. "actual" racists. These are the people that act on it. KKK members, business owners that dont hire minorities, and your grandma that locks the car door when a black male walks by. They likely have legit reasons for their racism, but it is none the less unfair on their behalf.

I put myself in category 2. While I have never thought or called someone a n***** or any derogatory term for a race, I do not lie to myself. When I see a 1983 honda accord with rims that cost more than the car, aluminum sideskirts, and a mismatched paint job, I say to myself "I bet thats a hispanic person driving the car" and thus far I have yet to be proven wrong. Now this may seem wrong to you Type Ones out there (see above), but that fact is its true...some people (not all) fall into the stereotypes that describe their race.

I'm racist yes. I have stereotypes on everyone until proven wrong.
