[QUOTE="sonicare"] It would be preferrable to understand it. I'm just saying that it's easy to look down upon past events in history, but when you judge them out of the context in which they happened, then it's not always fair. As for the vitriol, that's only because you are from DC and I hate the Washington Redskins.Engrish_Major
I always strive to understand the motives by the creators of history - and I read plenty of it. Understanding does not equal excusing. The fact is that the US government waged war against an indiginous people up until the very late 19th century, virtually decimating their numbers through direct and indirect means. I'm not sure how acknowledging that fact is in any way "annoying" (Wasdie) or "thumbing my nose" (you). And I'm always receptive to people pointing out inaccuracies in my posts. But I don't believe that there are any in this thread. Edit - and I don't follow football.

Sucks that it happened the way it did, but it did happen, and long enough ago that there's nothing to really be done.

I was engaged to one. They get free health care and free checks from their tribes. Money just for being Native. What if I walked up to you and said: "Hey man, thanks for being white, here's two grand." That's pretty much what it is like except exchange white with Native American. Her mom was real racist though, which kinda sucked.

It's taught in US schools. No one is going to forget. At least not in the US.

No need to forget, but it's essentially done with and there's nothing to actively apologize for anymore - just remember that it happened, sure. If you're European in ancestry, likely somewhere in your history ancestors were massive pricks to other people in Africa/Asia/Americas.

I guess the real question is who should apologize? Should you apologize for the actions of your predecessors? My ancestors werent even in the US during those times, but I find the whole idea kind of ridiculous. Does that mean I am a better person than you because my ancestors never owned slaves nor engaged in attacks against the native americans?

Since the late middle ages and up through the end of the industrial era, Europe had a bit of a technology lead and became a lot better at getting out into the world and doing that to other cultures. :) Back up further (or more recently) and yeah, everybody else did the same when given the chance.

Let me preface this by stating that I am not an advocate for or against this strategy. However, an example is the Australian government offering an official apology to the Aborigines. that is not placing the blame on any living individual - merely the officiating body that exists to this day.

That's fine. I think the US govt. should do the same thing. My issue is with things like reparations and such. Because reparations should be paid for by those at fault not by anyone who just happens to live somewhere.

Christianity is made with power of shield and swords and cruciates... that's why its popular...

Honestly I'd be more into buddhism ^^

Stuff like officially saying 'my bad' is OK, though, though I think somewhat pointless now. We actually teach that this stuff happened and that Americans were generally dicks to the indigenous population, which is kind of a win in my book.

Anyway, most people in the US, at some point, were aware of the Indian Wars from the time the first settlers set foot in the continent. They had to be because it was taught in most schools. It's just that many choose to forget or simply don't care, much like many here don't give a crap about their grammar/spelling.

No problem. It's just that whenever I briefed a pilot on what the weather is going to be along his flight route, I always staked my reputation on it. Although, I'm confident about what I briefed, there's always a degree of uncertainty. Throughout the years, I probably had a 95% accuracy on all the briefings I've ever done. But, that 5% inaccuracy weighed more heavily on my mind because if an aircraft I briefed fell into that group and it crashed and/or lives were lost, my career would have been finished.

It was a Genocide what happened to them, and while you cannot change the past I wish people would be more respectful to what happened. Most public education conviently ignore most of the attrocitous committed against them, the modern issues, and frequently mention them like a people that once existed. I'm even more disgusted with schools using Native American mascots and imagry, its disrespectful racist, and numerous studies have pointed to negative effects of having Native American mascots like poor self-esteem among Native students, more acceptance and belief of American Indian stereotypes and other racial stereotypes. I'm sorry but having a professional Football team called "The Redskins" is not appropriate, it would be like having a Football team called "The N******" :|

I can't understand how people are still complaining about crap that happened 200 years ago that everyone already acknowledges.

I mean, its like saying "hey British people, how do you feel about how Britain used to be a bunch of jerks and you had no way to control what they did centuries ago"?

Seriously, I can't understand it. Is there a point? Are you dissing America for doing what every other nation ever has done before?

Certainly in this instance. Societal values have definitely changed since that time. Not likely something to happen now in the US at least.

Well both actually, History and history. See if we cannot learn from how or why the History Channel became a channel about cutting trees and aliens, then we cannot learn how to prevent our other beloved channels from doing the same! :p

We don't live on their land. We conquered them.

l already posted this but I deleted it. I don't want to come off as a racist because im not. This is just a historical fact, okay? In the war between the Native Americans and the settlers, the Native Americans fired the first shots. There were people living out on the prairies that were too affraid to leave thier homes because the Natives would kill them. It doesn't make what the settlers did okay but it was war.

Yet quick to celebrate the 4th of July.

Must be nice to be able to chose what to be proud or ashamed of based upon convenience.

They dont believe in land ownership. Native americans thought the idea of owning land was silly. So it's not really their land.
