How long and how easily could the U.S. conquer Canada militarily?

Well, how difficulut of a task would it be? Could Canada's army, navy, and airforce compete with those of the U.S.? Also, what would be the best option for the U.S. to take? A ground assault, a naval assault, or an air assault? The plan will be the following:

1. Overthrow the Canadian Government

2. Dismantle its military

3. Displace its citizens to vacant U.S. territory within the current boarders of the U.S.

4. Transform Canada into a huge military base and use its coastline as a naval front.

5. From there, we'd launch a naval-assault on Greenland and take it over.

6. We should also do the same to South America.

7. The United States would become a huge empire which includes all of North and South America, and Greenland.

That's assuming that we're only fighting Canadians. Isn't Canada still officially a part of Great Britain? I think they might be obliged to intervene, not to mention the other nations that might do the same based solely on principle.

Also, why would we want to invade Canada? Aside from them not having any huge amounts of strategic resources, we don't seem to exactly see eye to eye on a lot of issues, seems like it would create more problems for boths sides.

This is an impossibility even in the hypothetical, as I've served in the military and worked with my Canadian counterparts.

The last warfare with Canada was the War of 1812. Since then, Canada and the United States are currently the world's largest trading partners, share the world's longest border, and have significant interoperability within the defence sphere.

The Vice Commander of NORAD is a three-star Canadian general.

Also, wasn't TC in that thread about fighting off an enemy invasion not too long ago? Is it safe to say this is his mentality, that he's worried about an invasion of his country but at the same time speculating about an invasion of his northern neighbors?

It won't be as easy as everyone thinks. ...especially if the Canadians can hold out for winter Most Americans are not used to those conditions. It would be hell fighting in that artic air...frostbite and other skin issues would be a major concern me thinksrawsavon

We're talking about soldiers here, not a bunch of yuppies on vacation who forgot to pack their long johns. We're the best equipped military in the world, we have the equipment to fight in cold environments and the medical equipment to deal with something like frostbite.

It depends. If it wants to maintain the country's infra-structure, quite a while. If it just wants to remove Canada from the map entirely, less than a day.

I come in here to share the knowldege I possess on the topic that you seem to not have.

The military might of the US is better than anyone else. Canada is farther down on the list of countries who spend on their military. Based on might alone, its a rather easy choice

Yeah, we don't control other nations, we only install oppressive dictators who are sympathetic to our interests and then get worked up into a frenzy when those people either turn on us when the gravy train runs out or when the people of the country actually take actions against these dictators and take government into their own hands.

It doesn't matter there is no "real" allies any more like there were in WW2 and WW1.. What we see now is a global group that will chain gang on countries that get out of line (mainly 3rd world countries).. The United States would be endangering themselves by making such a brunt action that will cause the distrust of neighbors and allies alike.

At worst, they'd encourage solving our differences through diplomacy. They'd use one of our diplomatic channels and ask us if we'd like to share our feelings.

Why would we want to? We have a great relationship with Canada so why would we want to destroy that?

EDIT: it's worth noting that much of our terrain is virtually identical to that of Afghanistan -- considering American forces over-all lack of success dealing with opfors in Afghanistan for over 10 years now, maybe they wouldn't have such an easy time taking Canada after all...

You're not taking terrain and fighting style into account. Because Afghanistan consists of large open valleys and mountains, it's very easy for insurgents to hide since there aren't that many of them. They use gurilla warfare. So, U.S. soldiers and marines spend most of their time just trying to find insurgents as opposed to actually fighting them. However, once they're found, they're no match. In the case of Canada, Canadian forces would have no terrain advantage like this, since most of the territory to the north is not even used. Also, since Canada has a normal military force, they would be divided into large groups that are easy to find/ identify. There would be no gurilla warfare. It would be a conventional war. Also, I'm pretty sure that the U.S. knows where all of Canada's military bases are. So, we could just take them out with air strikes.
