The bible is a guide for those without their own moral compass. It doesn't matter if the characters are real.

I believe it is very important. Some people in the past have died for their beliefs, and some believe so strongly that the Bible is the Word of God. And by moral compass, do you mean a sense of right and wrong? I doubt that could be true.[QUOTE="tenaka2"][QUOTE="hydralisk86"]

gonna leave this here.

I know you asked about Peter and what not, but existance of Jesus at least suggests that the other people in the stories were real people.
The bible is man's interpretation of what he feels that God wants to you live by. People living to be 800 in Genesis, etc. Not possible........ unless they were Highlanders. And only 2 people to start all of mankind? I guess we're all related and the genetic defects I suppose can be seen in certain areas of the country. I just don't believe that the bible was sent down from Heaven via email or fax. Man contrived this. . . However, don't think that I don't believe in God and Heaven, because I do, I'm just not a Christian because I don't believe in religion, but I do believe in being spiritual and doing the right things.

Some people in the past have died for their beliefs I'd be curious to know how you could prove that you knew what people in the past believed. anyways, what people believe isn't causation of their behaviors in the physical world. It's the other way around. What people say they believe. Isn't that significant.

Faith while obvioulsy means a lot to religious people means little to rational people.
The evidence was passed through word of mouth. The desciples shared their stories and teachings, and those stories and teaching were passed on to others by those who heard them, then were eventually written down as the Gospels. There are also historical records which mention Jesus, so if he existed, it would be safe to assume they did as well.harashawnThe reason i posted this thread was because i wanted more information about the 12 disciples. I did read that Jesus was a real man, however, i found nothing in the 3 books i read about the apostles being real. I think I remember somewhere that James, the brother of Jesus, was killed, but beyond that, i do not know any evidence about Peter, Thomas, etc.
[QUOTE="ZumaJones07"]They signed their actual names at the end of everything they wrote, so of course they're real.tenaka2
But what they wrote is false.
And you can prove they were wrong? One word.....FAITH.[QUOTE="AmazonTreeBoa"]

I couldn't care less what none religious people think about religion. So their opinion is meaningless to me. And rational has nothing to do with it, but thanks for trying anyways.[QUOTE="harashawn"]The evidence was passed through word of mouth. Saint Peter is believed to be the first Pope, he was crucified upside down in 64 AD. James was beheaded in the year 44. Philip was crucified in 54 AD. Thomas became a martyr in India in AD 72. Bartholomew/Nathaniel was reportedly skinned alive and beheaded on the Dead Sea. James, Jude and Andrew were also crucified.
One word.....FAITH.I hate to break it to you, but faith doesn't work as a means of learning the truth. Try to do anything using faith alone. You'll fail.[QUOTE="hydralisk86"]

There is no evidence at all that jesus was a real man.
Loaves and fishes are false? Curing people is false? Medical science wants a word.....Obviously, loaves and fishes, curing people etc. obviously false.

Historically there isn't much disagreement about his existence.....Yes there is.How do you guys know that the people in the Bible were real people? Such as Peter and the rest of the disciples, and Paul. Is there proof that they were real people?

If the crucifixion took place, it would have been in about 29CE. The four gospels were written no earlier than the period 70 to 90CE and were based on stories previously published using only a combination of the tongue and memory: a classic case of hearsay upon hearsay.

It is possible that the stories were written to accentuate Christ's teachings. In Matthew, Jesus said that you should not worry about what you are going to eat; when the multitude gathered around and the apostles realised there was not enough to feed them all, Jesus collected what there was and soon there was enough for everyone. This may not have happened, but it shows that God will provide what you need. The multitude never even considered how they would get food, but it was provided.Obviously, loaves and fishes, curing people etc. obviously false.

Historically there isn't much disagreement about his existence.....Historically there isn't much evidence at all, aside from the Bible and the disputed writings of a couple of later historians. As far as I can tell most historical scholars that are all in agreement about his existence are religiously inclined in the first place.

maybe if they have no religious education. Belief aside. It might be relevant for people to understand the context of a persons beliefs before they offer up insightful interpretations of them. Religious appreciation should be apart of every schools curriculum. I can't see that being a good interpretation...unless one is assuming more than the words say. Particularly since the Bible does mention virgin birth.[QUOTE="worlock77"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] The Bible doesn't say God came to earth and had sex with a girl.:?LJS9502_basic

The texts are clear on that so he wasn't presenting an interpretation in line with what was actually written. That would be like my interpretation of your post as saying you said....it's okay to make up facts. Is my interpretation accurate? Would I be creating falsehoods about you if I spread that as a valid reading of your post? Please Log In to post.
