[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]the bible was written by men....Stavrogin_
But the bible is the word of god, at least that's what christians believe. Are you a christian or an atheist?

If you break down the Bible.....some parts are logistical, historical, and legal in the case of the OT. As for what the bible is....written by men, inspired by God to teach a message. Not all parts are relative to that however.

Jesus was a real person, whether you beleive what he taught or not. He was a person who existde on planet Earth. That lends some creedence to other people being realy. Either way the Bible is meant to teach. some stories are more metaphorical and some are literal.

[QUOTE="Stavrogin_"]*link* I didn't. That's what christians believe.

Wait..... what..... EVILBIBLE? I don't trust that website anymore than the "answersingensis" website. Your under a false assumption that every christian believes in the same exact thing.

You people dazzle me. So what if the link is named evilbible, you can open your bible and check for yourself if the contradiction mentioned is there rather than discrediting it solely on domain name. But of course, that's the easier way isn't it?

It's called bias. That alone is enough reason for me to ignore that website.

Wouldn't it be more the easy way to link to a site with an agenda instead of finding out yourself?

I looked at the first so called contradiction in the list from evil bible...and quote mining aside...they were from two entirely different events and thus cannot be considered a contradiction. That would be like me saying the fact that you ate a burger for lunch on Monday and chicken on Tuesday was a contradiction. Totally illogical leap that site made. And I imagine it's more of the same. When an agenda is paramount....veracity is not important.

[QUOTE="Colin1192"][QUOTE="worlock77"] What, you want him to write out a list of every contradtiction in the Bible? That could make for a very long post. The Bible is known to be riddled with contradictions, and even the most staunch of apoligists will acknowledge that.scorch-62
yes, that is exactly what he wants. because no one would do such a thing, so he makes it his demand. then when no one will do that, he claims victory

I haven't exactly bothered to check if this is every one, but it's a fairly nice list.

I guess no one wants anything to do with this then

[QUOTE="alexside1"] And I'm asking you to quote it. I have no reason to believe you until you do so.alexside1

So a Christian who will not look in the Bible? Peachy.

Peachy? If someone claim that someone said x, and my skepticism is ringing I would have ask he/she to provide quotes from reliable sources. This is no different. Now provide it or I consider our discussion to be over.

I did not claim that "Person Y said X", I pointed out a contradiction in the book. And I told you exactly where to look in your own holy book. It should not be necessary for me to do a copy-paste job for you as you should have it at your fingertips already. Look in your holy book. Read the chapters I mentioned. Tell me if you feel there is no contradiction there.

I explained what chapter 11 was about. It wasn't a contradiction per se but that John was expecting a different message. So he questioned Jesus.

The bible was written by men inspired by god. So, the bible is the word of god. It's pretty simple. Therefore, any mistake is a mistake made by god who's supposed to be all-knowing and all-powerful and yet his knowledge is limited to what people knew back then. My explanation is rather obvious, people made up god in order to explain things that could've not been explained back then and the bible is just a book full of myths and primitive understandings of the world. But i want to know how do you, a christian, justify the mistakes allegedly made by god?

It's sad, really. I've had that for like at least a year now and the only chance I get to show it, it gets completely ignored. :c

Why do these threads still occur? The only right way to discuss religion among people of differing faiths is when they are all drunk, and the other guy is buying... that way, everything stays mellow, no one leaves with bad feelings, and you get a good buzz out of it. 8)

No actually a generalization is when one applies a principle to a large group. Speaking about what I've noticed is not a generalization. It's what I've noticed. And I CLEARLY stated that in my post.:|

Show me scripture that says God stated the earth was flat...

Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And it's inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 11:12
12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH. (KJV)
Revelation 7:1
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. (KJV)
Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? (KJV)
Jeremiah 16:19
19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. (KJV)
Daniel 4:11
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH: (KJV)

Science is but a snapshot of the information that man has at any given time. And that does change and get questioned. And you can't predict how rudimentary our living conditions are with what can occur in the future as technology and science advance. Doesn't seem logical to not allow for continued growth.LJS9502_basic
the difference being that our living conditions would advance because of b****in' robot refrigerators and s*** like that, not because it turns out we've been sitting in fashion that inhibited our intelligence by 30% we've got the basics down, unlike past dumb people who thought leeches cured everything from sniffles to anemia or that sleeping nears piles of your own s*** was okay because, well, why the flying f*** not? I mean there's no connection, since demons/angry hulk God are probably what's giving me this plague nowadays we can (mostly) understand that we got the sniffles because we were having too much fun licking doorknobs last night, that our anemia is from a (possibly hereditary) lack of iron and other good stuff in the bloodstream, and that living near piles of your own s*** is icky among other things. my point is that people of the future won't laugh at us because we didn't know how to cure said sniffles entirely or because we don't have the most efficient waste management system ever unless they're dicks or something, but who could predict that also where the hell did I even imply that I wasn't for continued growth in ANYTHING

So you flat out refuse to open up the text that you hold sacred and look to the portions of the text that I cited to check for yourself for any seeming contradiction? You flat out refuse to look in the Bible for yourself?

Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And it's inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 11:12

Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? (KJV)

Matthew 4:8

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (KJV)

...none of which explicitly says "Yo, peeps... the Earth, she is flat." In fact, getting "The Earth is flat" out of any of that is a pretty big stretch.

Also, take translation into consideration. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew... the King James' Version was translated into English from Hebrew, Latin and Greek, and has been show time and again to contain translation flaws.

Stavrogin_

So you gave me quotes from Isaiah. Isaiah was not God. And there isn't any mention of a flat earth in any of those. Four corners by the way is still an expression in 2011.

What the!? Of course people in biblical times people thought the earth was flat, people thought that for hundreds and hundres of years.

Our discussion is over since you didn't provide me any and pull out the same tactics.

So you flat out refuse to open up the text that you hold sacred and look to the portions of the text that I cited to check for yourself for any seeming contradiction? You flat out refuse to look in the Bible for yourself?

You out flat refuse to provide quotes, when I ask for them. I not going to search them for you, because you didn't provide any. Now provide the quotes or stop responding to me.

[ the difference being that our living conditions would advance

unlike past dumb people who thought leeches Seraphy-

And nothing you posted doesn't change the fact that in an advanced future what we consider cutting edge could be considered primative.....and they still use leeches today by the way.

Ehh, I think it's a bit of a stretch to read "the Earth is flat" from those. The "ends/corners of the Earth" thing is pretty commonly employed poetic language and always has been.

Why do these threads still occur? The only right way to discuss religion among people of differing faiths is when they are all drunk, and the other guy is buying... that way, everything stays mellow, no one leaves with bad feelings, and you get a good buzz out of it. 8)

My friend, I really do miss our days on MWSU and wish you'd post on OT more.

I'm easing my way back on, and trying to get into discussions that don't automatically make me want to strangle someone. :D

Still a generalization, dude..........

No actually a generalization is when one applies a principle to a large group. Speaking about what I've noticed is not a generalization. It's what I've noticed. And I CLEARLY stated that in my post.:|

You are making a general statement about all people who bash religion, thus it is a generalization. Observations don't make or break it.

The thing you seem to not grasp is that I'm not claiming anybody said anything. LJS had no problem addressing what I cited, why are you so adamant against doing so? Are you unfamiliar with the scripture in question?

Then please explain how an Earth that's not flat has an end. No, scratch that, please explain to me how is it possible to see the whole Earth from the highest mountain if the Earth is not flat. Please explain to me how the verse that says the Earth is a cicrle and the heavens are spread like a TENT means it's NOT a flat Earth? All those verses suggest a flat Earth and that's what people believed back then, so i find it somewhat funny that when it was discovered and proven that the Earth is not flat, some believers stepped forward saying "well yeah, no, god didn't mean that."...

Any mention of the "ends of the earth" are pretty obviously referring to the ends of the known world at the time. The people in that period had no idea how big the world was. And let's not forget the Bible was written by men, who wrote in language intended so that men could understand it. "The four corners of the earth" and the "ends of the earth" are common phrases still today, even though we know the world is round. It is important to note that God does not say in any of the passages you cited that the Earth is flat.

Very well, i stand corrected. I'll just focus on "Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And it's inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in." and "8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (KJV)"

Also i'll see if i can find the verse where it's stated that the Earth rests on pillars.

There is little real opposition to the position that Jesus existed. There is some, but it is by far the minority.

Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth

"Four corners of the Earth" (to take an example) is an English phrase. Do you know for certain that this is an EXACT translation, and not just an approximation?

Yep. That is a common phrase....but his examples led me to this in regard to the quote I left in....

"He (God) sits enthroned above the circle of the earth." Isaiah 40:22

This passage from Isaiah was written approximately 2,750 years ago, nearly 750 years before Christ. The word for circle in Hebrew is khug which means to be made spherical, which is in total agreement with what we know of the Earth's shape today.

Interesting what one can find on the internet....

Very well, i stand corrected. I'll just focus on "Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,Stavrogin_

See above.
