I do not support the death penalty. I don't think it serves as effective punishment or an effective deterrent. On top of that I'm in total disagreement with the whole "Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" philosophy. That only works until the whole world is blind and toothless.

The Death Penalty should be used, but only in extreme cases: Cop killers, rape/murder combos, and serial killers. Otherwise, life without parole suffices...

i don't think killing criminals does anything other than make the victims families feels better, the criminals should be rehabilitated, not put down like animals. if someone kills 20 people, obviously theres something wrong with them, and they should be trated, not murdered.

Imagine a scenario where a person murders the primary source of income for a working class family. Is there justice if the murderer gets life in prison? Is it really justice if that person is guaranteed the right to free medical treatment, food, and shelter meanwhile the family of the victim are guaranteed none of these things and even need to provide tax money to fund the murderer's life.

no because it is applied unequally to minorities, costs more than putting someone in prison for life, puts the US in the company of Iran and Vietnam as countries that execute the most people, etc. etc.

Overcrowded prisons? thats a good reason all by it self. Rehabilitation via the prison system does not always work. I've heard of pedofiles, who have raped and killed children, being released from prison even though they themselves have clearly stated that they will offend again. Isn't it just better to kill them? It will spare a lot of headache and possibly the lives of a few children. Pedofiles is just one example, there are pleanty of others where the criminals will just continue to do whaty they have always did after being released.

Some criminals, like child molestors, cannot be rehabilitated. This means if they are ever released, then they will commit the crime again. There are also numerous worthless individuals who have repeatedly committed violent offenses (robbery, assault, rape), and go immediately back to this type of lifestyle whenever they are released from prison.

It costs a tremendous amount of money to keep someone incarcerated for their entire lives. If they can never be a productive citizen, and will always be a danger to innocent people, then the death penalty is the only logical choice.

Sadly, this is correct. In California, Death Row inmates are actually treated better than other inmates. It got to the point where organized gang members encouraged their members to try and kill police if thjey were caught commiting a smaller offense. The logic was that killing a police officer was a capital offense, putting you on Death Row. If burglarizing a vehicle was your third strike, you were going to spend the rest of your life in prison anyway, so you might as well get the better treatment from Death Row.

Of course, the only reason this ever happened is becasue California doesn't use the death penalty. Prisoners know that the California Penal System hasn't executed anyone in over 20 years, and criminals in that state see a death penalty the same as they view any life sentence.

If it costs California that much to keep these guy alive, it's their own fault. There is no reason these guys should be treated better by the system than other prisoners, and there is no reason why someon sentenced to death 30 years ago ahould still be living well in prison.

Well, I certainly don't believe we should put people to death for say, laundering money or for securities fraud- basically crimes for monetary benefit instead of the direct intention of hurting someone. The reason it costs so much is because those who are convicted and given the death penalty are AUTOMATICALLY given an appeal, regardless if there was no questionable decision by the original judge. If you're given life in jail, you do not receive this, and therefore your lawyers have to prove that the original judge did something that is questionable. Perhaps if we'd just stop given death penalty inmates automatic appeals, the price tag would be considerably lower. I think the death penalty is appropriate for serious crimes because it's the most serious punishment we can give. Prisoners still have to be given certain standards of living, and if prison rules are enforced properly, they just live for the rest of their lives still able to socialize and be assured that they will be taken care of. I think the most barbaric thing usually comes from people who support life sentences. "Oh, just send him to jail for the rest of his life and let other inmates sexually abuse him- that's REAL punishment." So if a man rapes a woman, you want to send him to jail for a crime to have a crime performed on him. Sorry, but if you can't legally sanction it, it should not be considered a part of the overall punishment- sexual assaults obviously occur in jail, but just because they doesn't mean we can justify giving only life sentences because you would be too cowardly to advocate that punishment directly.

in certain areas (most in fact depending on the study one sites) of the US the cost of  housing inmates for life for murder or certain other crimes is less costly than the death penalty when appellate court costs are considered. giving cost as a consideration is close to equating life to monetary concers which somewhat (if not moreso) disturbs me.  leave money out of it...for the most part.

Yes, I support it. But only in the case of the most haenous of crimes, and if the evidence is rock-solid. It's primarily there to act as a deterrent, so if you still commit a crime knowing you could get the death penalty, you deserve it IMO.

... Obviously... but I'm talking about crime in general, texas impose the death penalty (more than any other state) but has that reduced crime? Also, the court can sometimes sentence the wrong person to death... happened in the UK to Timothy Evans in the 50's.

What's the point in sentencing the guy to death... when you can make him work?

USA impose the death penalty... do they get low crime? I think not. It's idiotic to just kill people off, use your brain.
