I've been waiting for a genre shift in mainstream culture for ages (Rap will probably get better, when it gets less popular... )

Steingrimur

I don't care for rap, the simplistic beats annoy & bore me, no offense. I prefer the tempo and dynamics of Rock & Roll. I don't want to rhyme, I want to ROCK.

[QUOTE="serbsta69"]since 2pac's legacy was for someone to continue the word of rap, the only person that cold be is eminem... i dont think so, i hope it doesnt die, but theres no hopefamilyguy77

Eminem sucks:| Have you actually heard his music lately? He's making trash music with G-Unit. He is one of the people destroying hip hop. Nas and Jay-Z are the ones keepin' hip hop truly alive, along with the great underground artists.

lmao at Em keeping rap alive:lol:

i dont agree with the statement about him being the only person keeping rap alive but he is definately one of the big contributors, if you only listen to his cds and not the ones hes on just to promote d12 or gunit he still has a lot to say and he still does it in his own interesting way...

No, his CD's are garbage. He makes stupid ass songs like "Smack That" :| That ish is NOT keeping hip hop alive at all, he isn't helping rap at all. He brought G-Unitto the world. I fail to see how that's helping hip hop, along with all the mediocre to terrible albums he's released(Encore, anybody?)

Smack that is Akon ft. Eminem i do believe and his songs are him speaking his mind and not caring about what people think about what he has to say. He spits out the stories from his life and his viewooints on the world and does it in the most upfront way possible. Thats rap.

But he still sucks:| Encore was a garbage album, all his G-Unit stuff he's helped make is garbage, and all the verses he's spit lately are garbage. And it doesn't help when he's collabing with garbage artists like Akon. You think Em is great? Look up the lyrics to "Fack" or "Just Lose It". Two songs from his albums that are complete and utter garbage in every sense of the word. If Em wasn't white he wouldn't be getting all this credit, plain and simple. The most overrated rapper of ALL TIME.

Look up the lyrics to his serious songs and dont generalize his rap to the more lighthearted crap that you are using as examples. Im not saying hes the greatest ever, but he is a great wether you think hes overrated because he is white or not. I could say the same thing about Donovan Mc being overrated as a qb because he is black but even though some of his hype comes from the fact that he is a black qb doesnt make that statement true. Deep down he is a great player, just like if you look past all the color with em you will see someone who is a great rapper

I don't dislike Em cus he's white, I dislike him cus I dislike him, period. I've never been a fan of his music, ever, and I doubt I ever will be. But it IS fact that if Eminem were black, he would NOT be gettin' all the credit he gets right now. I see people placin' him above people like Rakim, Nas, Kool G Rap, LEGENDARY rappers who he can't even come close to. That pisses me off.

Plus, I never found Em to be great, period. I fail to see how someone that has never produced a cl.assic album, while producing a few mediocre and one awful album, is a great rapper. Overrated.

i wasnt tryin to say you didnt like him cause hes white i was just adressing what you said about him being overrated, dont worry im not sensitive about race issues lol. His defining album is the Marshall Mathers LP, and it is considered to be a classic by many. His music, like any other kind of music is something you have to be able to relate to in order to get it. If you dont relate to the lyrics, then you just will not care. Its all opinion, but he has reached a lot of people that otherwise wouldnt ever have given rap a chance, thus becoming one of the greats. i dont think he places over he rappers you have listed either but i wouldnt ever say that he sucks just because im not a big fan of his music personally. He was and is influential to hip hop.

OK, I get what your tryin' to say:) Maybe that's why I never liked Em, I never could relate to any of his lyrics.

haha yeah he reached all the white kids with screwed up families that hate everything basically. And then a lot of people noticed he wasnt bad and jumped on the bandwagon lol but yeah i listen to mos def and kweli way before em any day but then again i like my mom and i dont have a crazy drug addicted ex wife

Now I hate rap with a vengance, but I hope that it doesn't die, but that it takes a back seat for a long while, so that all the rubbish mainstream rappers vanish, and allow for the  not so famous underground rappers to get in the limelight.  It might be nice to get all the "gangsta bling and hos" type rubbish out of teenagers's iPods and maybe get rap as a genre of music, not a borderline criminal ideal.

New Rap is abysmal today. Seriously, it has no meaning at all.  Old School rap meant something and rappers actually rapped about issues in the world. Ex. Tupac

You sir, are smart.

I am a fan of rap (and rock, I know OMG!) and these current day rappers are ruining the game. People like 50 Cent and Jibbs are causing a cancer to society. These people who walk around wearing Nikes and their pants down to their ankles listening to "Smack that, all on the floor" have absolutely no idea what real rap is. Underground rappers who actually have talent are struggling to compete because of today's standards. They will continue trying to have a dream and pursue it and end up failing because people would rather listen to how many diamonds someone has in their mouth than music with a purpose and a meaning.

Pretty true. Little Brother, IMO, the best underground rap group, got their video taken off of BET because it was "Too intelligent" according to BET. Unbelievable. Little Brother>>>>>>>>>> any mainstream rap. Underground rap 4 life8)

Yeah, cus rap is truly just talking fast:roll: You gotta have rythym, Cadence, breath control, flow, and alot more. I seriously doubt you could rap like Big Pun or Andre 3000.

For people who depend on crappy mainstream radio rap, maybe. But as long as we still have the few young great (underated) rappers it won't go any where, especially if you can appriciate them, like O. trice

don't blame the south, it's the A&R's who regulate self image that ruined rap/hiphop. The south has nothing to do with it.

see thats another point or discussion you can have i think that hip hop is dying too just like what Nas says hiphop is dead. Rap started hi hop and if you notice when rap starts fading so will hip hop because they are featured in a lot of the singers songs. Also people will get tired of hip hop. You noticed that Beyonce is starting to fad out of hip hop. True hip hop will last longer but we have no hip hop singers it will be the after mass of rap and stay another year or two and fade out as a new style of music will form. But i wonder what else type of music we can have we thought of everything?ct1257860
Techno (mostly instrumental)...not the "listen to your heart" stuff neither. IOW, techno for straight people (i'm not homophobic).

umm...Like KRS-ONE said off "Classic (Better Than I've Ever Been)"

Instead of broadcasting how we smoke them trees
On the radio we need to hear more local emcees
Where you at?, c'mon where you at?
This is the difference between emceein' and rap
Rappers spit rhymes that're mostly illegal
Emcees spit rhymes to uplift their people
Peace, Love, Unity, havin' fun
These are the lyrics of KRS-One..

I'm personally a fan of 80s rap, not 2Pac of the sorts... Rap shouldn't die, or fade away. Though mainstream may or should die, the underground will make an uprising someday. I do not know many Underground artists, I only know one whose name I can't think of at the moment. What am I saying here? iDunno. Old Skool is my thing. Ex. Run-DMC.

Rap was the big deal back when I was in middle school, which was eleven years ago. By high school nobody was into rap other than the the gangster wannabes. I didn't see many back then.

It's probably just an age thing. Certain things are cool during particular adolescent stages, because televion and radio tell kids what to like. Kids generalize and need attention so they find something to associate themselves with. It's tribal.

Nothing ever dies. Popluarity declines until it's in style agian. It depends on the people you hang around or interact with aswell. If they like rap you will be exposed to it so it seems to be coming out of the wood work. Anything that directly effects your life seems overwhelming, but that doesn't mean it's aglobal epidemic.

I hear rap when I hit downtown. I live uptown so I never hear it around here.

Why would anyone hope rap dies?

Just don't listen to it if you hate it, but I for one love it. And no I'm not a gangster wannabe, although I am in High School. And I also listen to Screamo, Hardcore, Alt, Folk, Punk, Emo, Indie, EBM, and many different sub-genres.

Naturally, the things you are exposed to as a child you might grow a foundness of. It's nostalgia. It's a reminder of childhood.

I only like good rap, which is near impossible to find other thn that it's usually just some genric or lame beats with some prison yard trash talk or ghetto jive. Do you think I want to be associated with that? You know what they say.. "If you have a synthesiser you don't need talent."

I'm tempted to get into rap, just make some loot. Check this.

Uh.. UH.. UH.. check it before I wreck it. Don't make me break out my pump chump. Don't fron't, don't think I won't bump a chump with da pump.

Check it now, you stoled by my jalopy full of crack rocks and that made me cry cause it not be kool. But I stoled your garden ho and your witches afro.

Check it, you popped a cap in me with your Gaston. It went bop bop bop and I said "OW!" when I felt the hate from your Glock. But I got you back when I put a grenade in your ghetto blaster.

I know you're just jealous because I have spinners, a stingy brim, a rhinestone glove and fairy does shoots from my foot when I sissy kick.

That's my first hit. What do you think?

Wow, that was stupid. There's tons of good rap out there, Little Brother, Oukast, nas, J-Dilla, Murs, Redman, Wu-Tang, GZA, Biggie, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, etc. I've been listening to rap since I was about 6 years old, and I still love it. Not because it brings back childhood memories, because I legitamately like rap. Why can't you get that through you head? Some people like rap, not because it's a fad, not because it brings back memories, because they like it. And your comment about synthesizer's  is hilarious:lol: You act as if you can make a half good hip hop instrumental. I 100% guarantee you can't make an instrumental as good as J-Dilla or DJ Quik.

We can only hope, probably the main reason of it MAYBE dying is the new rap, which is just generic crap

I love rap and I'm in college and I'm not a gangsta wannabe. Gasp! By the way, you know quite a few Gamespot Admins are rap fans too, right? ;) Rap fans come in all sorts, you surely don't think Jeff Gerstmann is a gangsta wannabe too huh...

I think you're on your way to becoming a millionaire. Send your demo to Def Jam asap.

Rap won't die. The reason disco died is because no one actually gave a **** about the music, they just wanted to make money, and when the genre turned unprofitable, they all left. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't true that rappers don't care about rap, and are just in it for the money.

[QUOTE="AARONRULZ1"]COnsidering that Retards Attempting Poetry is very popular and thus, mainstream,it isn't gonna die anytime soon.Hellsing2o2
Agreed.

I was rollin' around, in my mind it occurred
What if God was a her?
Would I treat her the same? Would I still be runnin' game on her?
In what type of ways would I want her?
Would I want her for her mind or her heavenly body?
Couldn't be out gettin' bogus with someone so godly
If I was wit' her would I still be wantin' my ex?
The lies, the greed, the weed, the sex
Wouldn't be ashamed to give her part of my check
Wearin' her cross, I mean the heart on my neck
Her I would reflect on the streets of the Chi'
Ride wit' her, 'cause I know for me she'd die
Through good and bad call on her like I'm chirpin' her
Couldn't be jealous 'cause other brothers worship her
Walk this earth for her, glory, I'm grateful
To be in her presence I try to stay faithful

[Chorus]
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] I'd like to be her very best friend

[Verse 2]
He worked with her, she was his lady's best friend
Even if they don't try some ladies test men
And this was a test that was bigger than him
Some believe its the nature that is given to men
He had a good gig, a wife, a kid, a decent home
One reason or another couldn't find peace at home
She asked, "Why do men always have to stray?"
He said, "I'm bad, not as bad as Eric Benet"
"I used to take 'em out to eat but they wasn't really eatin'
Mighta got a little head but I wasn't really cheatin'"
It's hard when your lady don't believe what you say
And what you did in the past you gotta live with today
She asked if they could spend the night together
He thought, and said, "I'm tryin' to get my life together"
Went home to his lady, these were his confessions
"Baby you a blessin' and my best friend

Common on "Faithful"

Yeah, rappers are all truly retard attempting poetry:roll: You guys are ignorant.

Most of the guys you mention have terrible music. I play the six string and compared to a guitar syntetics are child's play.

Do you think you're everyone in the world? Music goes in FADs. So you developed a taste for a particular music. That happens. Rap is like candy corn. Some people like it.  You are someone, not everyone. You are a single person that represents the small percentage of people that actually like it. You are one person, not billions.

Most of the artists you mention have lackluster material.

Fine, you like rap, we get it, you're a proud of your adolescent tastes. Do you think kids realize they are degenerates or simple minded?

Most rap is full of bad grammar and phrases that just don't make any sense. A gross misuse of words.  I like Wierd Al's White and Nerdy because it's clever. The only good rap is clever rap.

I bet you've never heard half the artists I listed. I guarantee you've never heard Little Brother. Common,  or Murs. So don't generalize all rap as being degenerates shouting onscenities. Ever heard Kidz In the Hall? My guess is no. Do you know where these so called "morons" went to school? Penn State University, one of the finest colleges in the USA. @ you calling all rappers morons and degenerates when alot have a better education than you. Or what about the Roots? A rap Band, yes band, with guitar, keyboard, drums, ALL live Instruments. Guess you never saw that Andre 3000, Eric B, and DJ Quik can play a variety of instruments, INCLUDING guitar. Just cus they don't flaunt them doesn't mean anything. @ you thinking rappers are no talent cus they use synthesizers, when alot can play instruments.

You call my tastes adolescent? What exactly makes your tastes so godamn better, Mr superior? You think cus you like rock your somehow more intelligent than me? You need to get the hell off of your high horse. People like you are what makes OT not fun, you go around with a superiority complex because you listen to a different genre. Get a damn life.

 at White and Nerdy being clever:lol: You want clever? How about Nas rapping a story from the perspective of a gun? Or nas rapping a story completely backwards? What about the style that Outkast used on their abums? Mixing rap with other genres? THAT"s clever, not some idot making a song to make you laugh with a jacked beat. You call my tastes adolescent when you like a childish ass song like White N nerdy.... Yeah, my tastes are so adolescent, considering I listen to intelligent rap like Common, Mr Lif, Murs, and Little Brother.

Doesn't seem like your very aware of the hip hop genre at all, considering the stupid generalizations in your post. Get the hell off your high horse and quit thinking your superior cus you like a different genre.

Kidz in the Hall actually graduated from UPenn which is an Ivy League school and better than Penn State. Mr. Lif who you mentioned went to Colgate University which is one of the top Liberal Arts colleges in the country.

I don't think it will ever die. It's probably the most popular music today... Love it and always will.

The south makes some of the best rap music, at least for me. Lil' Wayne is the greatest to ever live and then Three 6 Mafia, Lil' Jon, Nappy Roots and such are amazing. And I don't care what you guys say, 50 Cent and Mike Jones rock.
TallicaFan2005

What are you out of your mind, Li'l (lame) Wayne has ghost writers (gillie da kid)  You should, lil jon annoying, you should listen to lyrics beast like Rakim, Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest, AZ, Beanie Sigel, Cormega, Jay Z Nas and then some.

I do like some southern rappers/groups like outcast, T.I.  50 cent lacks in the lyrical department he makes up for with good beats and he's a genius when it comes to hooks.
