A better anology would be this:

Would you rather take facts about the situation in Iraq from the US media, or the Taliban. Sure, it's extreme, but it's similar in that the US media would be far more credibile than the Taliban would.

In this case, the APA and other organizations, both in and outside the US, trumps the theories of NARTH, an organization that has already admitted it's own bias by stating to be against the APA.

Not sure if you missed the memo... but it's not really a choice. Although they can choose (and I believe a very high number do...) to live a lie their whole life and pretend their straight (and miserable) if that's what you mean. I think the more people who come out, the more people would learn to accept it and realize they aren't living in the 50's. (or 60's or whatever decade...)
