What's an example of a good country?

Storm_Marine

Norway, Sweden, Finland. Those are pretty decent. Got some family living in Norway.

High taxes, low temperatures, and lots of free crap.

Whatever floats your boat.

High taxes are what makes the Scandinavian countries tick. We have health care way more superior to your sub-par, anti-poor people health care system. At least we don't bill people thousands of dollars/local currency for a regular health checkup or send them to jail when they can't pay their medical bills due to working three below-minimum wage jobs and having lost their house and are now living in a trailer park.

We do have free speech. But freedom of speech has its exceptions and that's one of them.

Either it's free or it isn't.

In other words, UK-ers are children that go crying to the goverment if someone hurts their sensitive feelings.

The USA is the UK's baby, and you know it. And in America, last I heard, you're not free to say things that might cause violence. So... um... yeah.

I think you will find England is the centre of the world as we pretty much created and ran everything else at one point.

It's sub-par perhaps, but healthcare is just as 'free' where i live as it is in Scandinavia.

I can go to the doctor's office and get a health checkup for free. If I have to get a shot, because I'm going travelling, I pay for the injections, but not nearly as high a price as I would if I lived in America. I'm currently medicated and take several kinds of pills, which would normally cost me around 3000 DKK each month, but thanks to living in Denmark, I can get several ways of funding my medicine because of the high tax rate, so my medicine is down to around five dollars a day.

Never ceases to amaze me the ignorance about the US that gets spouted by non citizens. Shots are free when you have insurance. And insurance is just another way to pay rather than high taxes.

I agree with this. Many people think that free speech should come without consequences, but do they ever stop and consider that maybe it's not such a great idea to go into the projects and start yelling the n word over and over? Free speech without common sense has a bad ending, usually.

Greatly depends. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have low taxes and insurance that isn't overpriced. Way more people get screwed over in the US than they do over in Scandinavia.

Yes, if you have insurance. And a lot of people don't. And they get left behind with higher and higher bills to pay, because of the stupid way your 'beloved' america functions. Now, I'm not saying my own country is perfect, because it's far from, and in these economical crisis times it's hard to even live like one used to. But I prefer my high taxes over a government that gives crap about the weaker citizens.

If I was fit to have a job, I'd be paying my taxes, like a good citizen does. I vote, I keep up with politics as much as possible and I try to be a good world-citizen.

I'm almost fairly sure that you'd get arrested if you began a protest against the government, however peaceful it might be. I am also almost fairly certain that a lot of folks would get mad and say you're not a patriot, because we all know patriotism = shutting up and taking it up the arse daily from the govt. that loves screwing you over. And over..and over again.

Actually the "weaker" citizens have free health care. Again...you speak without facts. Some people do opt not to purchase insurance...but many of those people are quite well off and just choose to do without because they are healthy and want to spend the money elsewhere. That is their personal choice.....doesn't mean I'm going to cry over their stupidity. Get your facts straight.

Both are examples of restrictions on free speech. In both instances, you CAN say those things but have to deal with consequences. I'm not seeing how the US offers unchecked free speech here, like someone suggested earlier.

There are only consequences when it involves assault.

You are responsible even if someone does not get hurt. So technically it is a restriction, some speech should be regulated.

In what ways?

Mainly political power, but it shortly follows with economical and military power afterwards. Empires gain momentum in a gradual way but even before their stronger position is evident you can still realize how their influence starts to become more significant. As of right now I think China's influence is greater than that of the US even if numbers don't show it right now.

Uhm that is not the same thing. Examples ofspeech that is illegal in the US would be threats and offensive verbal attacks. If you say f*ck you to someone they can press charges.

Austindro

Both are examples of restrictions on free speech. In both instances, you CAN say those things but have to deal with consequences. I'm not seeing how the US offers unchecked free speech here, like someone suggested earlier.

There are only consequences when it involves assault.

Edit: Or treason but that should go without saying.

So there are restrictions...

You could likewise say that there aren't restrictions in the UK... you're responsible for the offense caused in another person. You can say whatever you like but if someone takes offense, you're responsible.

That is a restriction. We can offend if we want. The consequences are on causing unsafe conditions or causing another to commit crimes. But merely offending someone....no. So the UK would be more restrictive than the US.

I think I see what you're saying with no restrictions. It's all about the manner in which free speech is used. Use it wrong, expect consequences.

Yeah....but you can certainly say it. Just not always with impunity.

There are better threads and you still make these threads, so what will me making a better thread influence you? The answer is none because you will never stop because you thrive off of making crappy threads.
