He really is.  But unfortunately his arrogant personality tends to overshadow it.  When it's all said and done he'll be regarded as one of the best producers ever.

This board is mainly filled with people(white teenagers) who only appreciate Rock so I'm not even going to bother reading through the thread

He's not a musical genius no, but he is a fantastic producer, I'd say 75% of why I enjoy his music is the beats and samples he uses, stuff like Otis on Watch The Throne are a great example, basically turning Ottis Redding's voice into an instrument of its own.

As for the OP Not sure if I could actually call him a genius, I mean he didn't really invent anything Like many popular artists his sound is largely composed on unexplored aspects in the underground, not aspects that were never made before But doing them with the hooks that he does them does take skill. He's one of the best producers around, at least that.

Uhg, no. He is terrible person who uses a computer to create some decent beats and steal other people's music. That is not my definition of a musical genius.

I'll be honest and say I don't really give him much of a chance because from what I have seen of him he's a douchebag. It's funny when I saw your thread my first thought was, man that guys a douche. Then I read it and about 50 people said the same thing with the same exact word I was thinking. To each his own, you think he's a musical genius, I think he's what's wrong with people now so I stay well away from him. As for being married to the skank Kim Kardashian, wow that should make quite a baby. Douche with god complex marries skank with godess comples, both beg for the spotlight so they can show the world exactly what not to be like and viola a baby to raise...mmmmhmmmm sounds like a heaping ton of win to me.

Are people who think he is some amazing producer just not familiar with alot of music? There is WAY better production out there. God, there is an entire genre (dubstep) filled with people who absolutely **** on Kanye's producing. Add to that his laughably bad lyrics and rapping and you are just left with really underwhelming music.

Good examples of great production:

Zedd's Dead-You and I

Skrillex-Cinema

Nero-Doomsday (my current ringtone thanks to that AMAZING Borderlands 2 trailer that featured this song!)

That is off the top of my head without me digging into classic stuff from other bands like Nine Inch Nails.

He's an asshole but there's no denying his music is excellent and he's one of the greatest producers in music, even if hip hop isn't your thing. His arrogance has only worked to his benefit, not many could have done what he did to a Taylor Swift then released a critically acclaimed album. Guy is amazing at generating buzz, and he's putting the screws to Kim Kardashian and Iggy. Good for him

The man definitely has an ego problem, but I agree that he's a brilliant artist. Late Registration is my favorite of his. As far as his songs go, I think I'd pick Family Business, We Don't Care, Power, Heard 'Em Say, and Gone. In no particular order.

But at the same time, some arrogant athletes are great while others are not. And some are not so arrogant. Miguel Cabrera won the Triple Crown and MVP last year and didnt care about any of it. But really now. What has Kanye West done that sets him apart from a million other rappers? You mention athletes but, 60 years from now, will Kayne West be remembered in a way like Mickey Mantle? How about The Beatles? And how about Black Artists living and dead who's legends and influence continue? Jimi Hendrix? Prince? Bob Marley? WTF makes Kayne West so special?

Quaker-w00ts

There's far more to production than pressing buttons and moving sliders. You have to know what all of those buttons and sliders do, and how to make them work with each other to layer a piece of music into something that's cohesive, harmonious, and fluid. And that is most certainly not an easy thing to do. Also, rapping can get very complex, and it does take a very smart person to put together a creative rhyme scheme, with a great flow, using a diverse vocabulary.

That being said, Kanye West is still far from the upper echelons of both rappers and producers. Absolutely everything he does has been done before, and better, by countless others, including people I have personally met and/or worked with. A "musical genius" he most certainly is not.

[QUOTE="UniversalBread"][QUOTE="Murderstyle75"]Just like Justin Beiber and Nicki Minaj, Kayne West performs fad music that appeals mostly to teenagers and young/dumb females. Its fad music and nothing more. The jackass has even done music with Beiber.Murderstyle75
Kanye has never done music with Bieber, he has said via Twitter that he wanted to make Bieber cool. I don't think his music is fad music, check out his earlier works. They certainly haven't aged at all/gone out of style. I'd call Luda's collabs with pop artist fad music.
Define fad music by the way, is it just whatever is popular with teenagers?

So you are saying Runaway Love didnt have Beiber and Kanye on the same song? And yes. Calling Kanye West great music pretty much makes you a fashion victim. You must wonder how popular he would even be right now if it wasn't for Kim Kardashian. Whatever keeps him on TMZ I guess.

Ah, what's wrong with collaborating with Bieber? Does that make his music without Bieber any worse?
But critics agree Kanye West music is objectively great, he was making headlines before he ever met Kim Kardashian. If dating her guaranteed you time in the limelight where are the other forty+ black men she's been with and Nick Lachey?
Can you give me a single reason why Kanye West music is objectively bad? Him being popular doesn't count.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. Yes there is. And yes, hip hop totally is my thing. Mostly classic hip hop, not a whole lot of recent stuff. But yeah, even if you're super into hip hop, there certainly is room to deny that his music is excellent and/or that he's one of the "greatest producers in music". He is a talentless hack. Same **** sound as T Pain and the rest of the hacks. Just something for the MTV generation just like every previous MTV generation that faded away. There is one thing that makes him different though. He cuts down on ebonics in his lyrics, so that even white suburban people can understand him. And that shit he did to Taylor Swift was BS. Just a lame publicity stunt to get people to talk about him. Must have felt good though being black and being called a Jackass by the first black president.

What objective qualities would dictate excellent music and great production? Taste in music is certainly subjective, but how can you argue that Kanye (objectively) isn't one of the greatest?

But that's your opinion man, he doesn't sound like most other artist in hip hop to me. Maybe I'm biased because I live in Georgia and most of the rap that gets radio play here is typically either pop rap (Ludacris rapping in the background of a Taio Cruz or Justin Bieber song) or dirty trap shit like Flocka, Trinidad James, Rich Kidz, Roscoe Dash or Ca$h Out. Young Money artist are in genre of their own but don't sound at all like Kanye.
A lot of artist don't wrote their own stuff but still make great music.

But there's a difference between a real artist and glamorized karaoke. A lot of people can perform. It takes a lot more to write though and that's what makes an artists music so special. And really now. Do you think that people will remember Kayne West, 20 and 30 years from now? I have heard so many of these acts come and go since the late 80's. I really don't think he is any different.

But there's a difference between a real artist and glamorized karaoke. A lot of people can perform. It takes a lot more to write though and that's what makes an artists music so special.Murderstyle75
What defines a real artist? Michael Jackson, for example, didn't write a lot of his songs, but he's certainly a real artist as well as a great performer

And really now. Do you think that people will remember Kayne West, 20 and 30 years from now? I have heard so many of these acts come and go since the late 80's. I really don't think he is any different.

I can't predict the future and neither can you. I think he'll go down as a legend, he's released a lot of great music that sold very well and was critically acclaimed. That's really all that matters, everything else is a matter of taste and hating popular things just for the sake of it isn't at all uncommon. He's a household name and I think he'll be around for a long time releasing quality content.
Rappers I think will fall off: 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James, and probably Lil B.
