Jesus, file hosting sites are one investment to consider! O_OThis actually has nothing to do with the bill. The guys were using the service to launder money and make money off of illegal content. The ruling on this happened on the 5th of this month and has been under investegation for a long time.
They were actually told to shut down the accounts of people who uploaded illegal materials. They did not.
From what I read here, Megaupload was doing a lot of crazy copyright violations and was profiting heavily. Apparently they made $175 million off of it.
This has nothing to do with SOPA/PIPA.

[QUOTE="Just-Breathe"][QUOTE="quebec946"]ikr Mediafire, rapidshare...all up for the chopping block next Rapidshare is nothing but a virus ridden piece of rubbish right now, they should aim for it next. But leave mediafire out of it please.they say america is the land the of freedom IRONY.

As long as they aren't profiting from copywrited matierals on a massive scale like Megaupload was, they have nothing to worry about.
They aren't shutting these guys down becasue they are hosting the copyrighted materials, they are shutting them down because they were profiting from it.
Heck it says they were paying users to upload illegal content then using that illegal content to generate a lot of traffic for the site. Though to cover themselves they removed it from being searched and whatnot and only let those who had the URL to the uploaded material link/view it. Shady.
I know I'll get crap for this, but f*ck that site was awful. Probably the one and only file hosting site that I'm happy to have gone. Good riddance.Zhang--JiaoThe only reason I don't like this news is the fact that it doesn't bode well for other similar websites. Like Mediafire.

I see. In that case, good move to shut it down then.Holy **** The US sounds like a shi*ty place to me now. I'm mostly mad because of MU symbolic value as one of the oldest file sharing websites I used, but my "cultural" and "recreational" activities won't really be affected as I mostly use P2P and the other sh*t load of file sharing websites.
Right because allowing something with a price attached to be taken for free is the right thing to do....isn't that against the Islamic religion or do you only pick and choose what to follow...(most likely)...:roll:Holy **** The US sounds like a shi*ty place to me now. Have fun with that. I'm going to laugh when the cops shoot you down. If anyone is willing to use extreme violence over this, they're morons. Megaupload isn't innocent. Far from it.It is time to use extreme violence and terrorism.

Megaupload is a sh!tty filehoster and don't care about their fate
But I do care about congress holding a file hoster reponsible for user-submitted content.
Blue-Sky
Well they have evidence that the file hoster was hiding the illegal files from the searches, paying people to upload illegal content, and then route users to the illegal content through non-front end means and then profit from the ad revenue.
That's a little more than just hosting the files.

I used to use 4megaupload.com to search for files there. It always looked fishy to me.I'm by no means tech savvy so i'll seem like an idiot here but if they get rid of one site shouldn't they get rid of them all?
[QUOTE="comp_atkins"]how can they determine "lost revenue".. they can't simply say that a movie downloaded is a movie not paid for. it may just be a movie the person wasn't ever going to pay for and simply downloaded because they could..-DirtySanchez-your an idiot you're an idiot
I think they have to be located in the US? Or registered as a US business or otherwise the US government can't do **** to stop them. Just my two cents here.I'm by no means tech savvy so i'll seem like an idiot here but if they get rid of one site shouldn't they get rid of them all?

edit: Just like what they tried to do to thepiratebay. Tried to shut them down, moved their servers somewhere else (Egypt? Sweden?)
[QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"][QUOTE="-DirtySanchez-"] oh im sorry did i strike a nerve? its still stealing no matter how you want to rationalize it, your a thief and thats that-DirtySanchez-Oh boo hoo I'm going to cry in a corner now. Whatever, I don't care what you want to call me, but you need to learn the fcking meaning of the terminologies you use. you dont have to cry you can find your free content elsewhere that the rest of us pay for, its ok

[QUOTE="-DirtySanchez-"][QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"] So much for a civil conversation you assf*ck. Listen, if someone wasn't going to/could not afford something in the first place then it does not equal a loss. Otherwise, yes, it does bring about a loss. However that is not ALWAYS the case. Stop speaking in fcking absolutes. Shottayouth13-oh im sorry did i strike a nerve? its still stealing no matter how you want to rationalize it, your a thief and thats that Oh boo hoo I'm going to cry in a corner now. Whatever, I don't care what you want to call me, but you need to learn the fcking meaning of the terminologies you use. Yeah. Stealing is a physical act. Like going to a store and taking something off the shelf without paying for it. That counts as a real world loss. Copying a game doesn't mean it's a loss, unless you can prove the person who copied it had the intention of buying it, but chose to copy it illegally instead. And even then, there is still no physical loss.

There's a difference between shutting down a file-sharing site that just so happens to have some copyrighted content, and shutting down a site that (allegedly) actively and purposefully offered financial incentives for users to upload copyrighted content.
