You, haven't the slightest idea of what emo is. MCR is the exact opposite of emo. Check out Rites of Spring, that's emo.

Emo is a style of hardcore punk which describes several variations of music with common roots. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk which originated in the Washington, D.C. music scene. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the emotional performances of bands in the Washington, D.C. scene and some of the offshoot regional scenes such as Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and later, Moss Icon.

There are a lot of people who don't know what the word 'emo' means. I've seen Rage Against the Machine, Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce and Iron Maiden be refered to as emo before.

MCR is pop. If you are getting airplay on MTV you aren't true emo, plain and simple. Rites of Spring has no influence whatsoever on MCR. Emo is about releasing your emotions. MCR is about making money off the Hot Topic crowd. If you want I will type that again.....dumbed down a little so you can understand, it seems like you are having problems grapsing a very simple concept.

No....Has the meaning of a musical genre ever changed before?
Hmm it's a hard call sometimes as to what is and isn't emo - eg I wouldnt describe Jimmy Eat World as emo yet they were the first "emo" band I ever heard called that.
It's a genre that is more than most open to definition - I tend to think anything pop/punk with complaining lyrical content gets filed in my head as Emo

What is your definition of emo? Mine is basically an almost whinny song about a petty topic like losing their girl friend or about a girl who does not like them, etc.... It should also involve some random screaming

being played on MTV doesnt change the style of music you are, if you're blues one day when not popular, you're still blues if you ARE popular.
emo is a style of music that heavily emphasizes 9th chords, usually arpeggiated (but having the notes drag over one and other) and simple 4/4 time signatures, third harmonies and so on and so forth.
if you do those things, and are being played on mtv youre still doing those things. thus you are still emo.

before: traditional music not written by anyone in particular and nothing much in common other then being distinctive to the culture
after: music written by someone in particular, integration with other genres established (Folk Rock, later Folk Metal, etc).

Sometimes genres also carry an ideology, which is what MCR most lacks.

"Emo music has been blamed for the suicide by hanging of Hannah Bond by both the coroner at the inquest into her death and her mother, Heather Bond, after it was claimed that emo music glamorized suicide and her apparent obsession with the emo band, My Chemical Romance was said to be linked to her suicide. yeah it grew from it, which means it had something that stood out. one thing being, the way the music its self sounded. I dont believe lyrics determine a genre, so I look to music its self.

The way the music sounds?....if you think that MCR sounds like Bad Brains or any other hardcore punk band then.....wow, just wow.
Emo used to be a music genre from the late 80s and early 90s which evolved from Hardcore Punk, which has been repeated many times in this thread. Lately, bands like MCR are being wrongly labeled as emo by the media who also take this term as a stereotype to people who tend to call attention by pretending to be over-sensitive and over-dramatic, probably this is what everybody knows as emo these days, but in the end, it's only just a genre.Berzz
Thanks for the definiton, but I think you just wasted your time because there are still some people who are too dense too understand.
