Not supporting same sex marriage does NOT make someone a bigot.

[QUOTE="MrPraline"][QUOTE="ShadowMoses900"]I'm not a hompophobic bigot that hurts people, ShadowMoses900

And actively opposing their ability to get married is not hurtful?

I can understand they see it as getting the equal rights they deserve, but they should see it that not everyone believes that marriage should be changed.

And lol I'm not "actively opposing" anything, what a stupid claim on your part. I don't speak against gay people or gay marriage, I just say "to each his own", but simply choosing to not support something on a ballot I don't believe in is fine and not bigoted at all.

What I meant with "actively opposing" in your case is voting against it.

you are opposing their right to marriage by voting no on the ballot.

If it lost by one vote.....

No it isn't. The ballot question was simply "Should the (state) legal definition of marriage change to allow same sex couples" and I voted no along with the strong majority of people in my state. And I can gurantee you that not everyone who didn't vote in favor of it is a bigot. Most of us have no problem with them having the same rights as married people at all.

ShadowMoses900

I don't care what they do. I just simply believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

Clearly you do. If not, you'd have no problem with gays being allowed to marry. You want to restrict others' rights for a reason I can't even understand, and never will.

[QUOTE="MrPraline"][QUOTE="Teenaged"]Religious reasons are usually just a justification for opposing it based on it being... "weird" or "icky" (a gut feeling behind the mask of a holy being). Or whatever of the sort. /imo, although I'm pretty sure

I guess professing that he doesnt oppose it due to religious reasons lends him some credibility (OT users on average dont take religious arguments seriously). But thats where it stops. He then has to explain why, if not for religious reasons, and saying "its weird" just doesnt sound convincing. So we get the "its none of your business" response.

He could use some arguments other than religious ones (human biology for instance), but not only are those arguments weak, Shadowdemons is also unable to argue. Its good he's aware of his limitations.

ShadowsDemon

Yeah. Seems weird he is unwillling to even explain his reasons. It's a so called internet debate, in the end. But yeah, he knows nothing will really stand up to the liberty and civil rights issues involved here.

I could argue about it if I wanted, but it's really not worth it. No matter what anyone on the internet says you won't ever change someone else's mind, no matter what you say. I'm not for it, and that's the end of the story.

Then what are you doing in this thread if you're not arguing about it?

Not really. I don't care if gay people want to be together, it doesn't bother me at all. That's their business, I just don't believe in a man and a man or a woman and a woman getting married the same way I don't believe a man and his sister or a man and 5 women should get married either.

If my state did allow gay marriage it wouldn't really bother me, it's not the end of the world to me if they did. I just don't believe in same sex marriage.

But that's what the whole point of the bill was trying to accomplish! You voted AGAINST them having the same rights as you. Throw out semantics for one second and realize what you just did.

They already get the same rights in my state through civil unions. I didn't vote against anyone's rights.

No, they don't. This has been explained to you.

[QUOTE="toast_burner"]Why don't you believe in changing it? it's changed many times before and can change again/

Abbeten

I have already given my reasons.

Look you guys are so judgemental you don't even understand anything. Simply not supporting same sex marriage does not mean you hate gay people. I believe gays should have all the same rights as married people, it's wrong that they can't get the same medical benefits etc....as married couples do. I want them to have all those same rights, I just don't want to call it marriage.

abloo bloo bloo you guys you're so mean and judgmental for calling me a bigot just because i want gay people to have their relationships legally defined as inferior bloo bloo why can't you just be open minded like me

Oh get over yourself. I never said they were inferior.

And a good half of you guys arn't even expressing your honest opinions. You're just trying to fit in around here. Some of you have PM'd me about your real opinions on things and explained yourselves, you know who you are.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] So the UK is against gay marriage since they use the term civil union?LJS9502_basic

You are aware that the majority support same sex marriage and it's currently in the process of being changed?

But has not as of yet....correct?

No, why does that make the UK as a whole bigoted?

I don't care what they do. I just simply believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

ShadowMoses900

Clearly you do. If not, you'd have no problem with gays being allowed to marry. You want to restrict others' rights for a reason I can't even understand, and never will.

I have been to states where they allow it. It doesn't bother me when I meet a gay couple that introduces their significant other as their "husband/wife".

Yet you don't think they should be allowed to marry...

On most issues, good arguments can be made for both sides. I really can't think of any for this one.

Oh, well since you've happened to have been to states that happen to allow it.....

This whole semantics thing is exhausting. You basically said that you want the definition of a marriage to be upheld as man and woman, that you believe it is an important social institution. So, if you agree that same sex couples should have the same rights, being able to own property together, raise children, have the same health benefits and hospital visitation rights, then what exactly changes? What is it about a civil union, that grants a same sex couple the exact same rights as a married couple (and something in the back of my mind says it doesn't) that is so much different than a marriage?

you never explicitly said they were inferior but you want the government to define their relationship as different from and thus inferior to straight relationships this is not the proper function of the government. it does not exist for you to render moral judgment on people you disagree with.
