[QUOTE="Darth-Caedus"]Wait...Xasthur get hate? O_o I've never seen anyone say anything but good things about them...:P

Saturos3091

There's a ton of hate surrounding Malefic (Xasthur) and a lot of Depressive Black Metal. It's often called "emo metal" by black metal purists and Xasthur gets lots of negative comments because apparently "he is a terrible songwriter." People think his songwriting isn't focused enough, although unfocused songwriting is one of the core elements of black metal, so you'll often see extremely negative reviews by both critics and BM fans/purists. I really enjoy the atmosphere he puts in his music...that droning, hazy feel like that of walking through a misty forest in winter. It's certainly not for everyone, but those who attack it don't seem to understand that the music isn't supposed to be direct and in your face like a lot of the more raw black metal bands.

He gets almost as much hate as Nargaroth, although I can't say I'm much of a fan. :P

Huh...first I've ever heard of anyone hating on DBM:P Then again I mostly stay away from the grim trve kvlt black metal elitists:P

[QUOTE="Choga"]Everyone decided to copy darkthrone and burzum.

Darth-Caedus

Black Metal≠Metal as a whole...

Metal is a silly genre imo, especially the LOTR or Nordic Mythology themed stuff, great for angry DND sessions.

swazidoughman

Seriously?

You find this silly?

I was loling pretty hard actually, I just find it funny they people take it seriously.

It just so happens that I have a different taste in music.

During that time period black metal was the only metal genre left that hadn't went to **** yet. Death Metal had already become a parody of itself. Same story with grindcore. Thrash, well, you can only have so many 30 second songs until everyone starts copying each other. Don't even bring up Power metal, thats just corny music in general.

Choga

That still leaves Progressive Metal, Doom Metal, Folk Metal, Gothic Metal, Symphonic Metal, and many others >.>

My friend down the street is one. He likes Xasthur though surprisingly, but after browsing several sites and seeing how much hate Malefic got (primarily for the albums between Telepathic With The Deceased and the newest one All Reflections Drained, although many people seem to like Defective Epitaph)...made me wonder why. :? He does have a lot of support too though, and the "official" critics give him mixed reviews which at least shows that it's a likable form of music.

None of wich are deserving of any attention, except for maybe doom. And I only like a few doom bands anyway.

I use music as a form of entertainment, and as a escape from the real world.

If I want to hear about social issues and politics I'll just read the news.

Some of it is like that, which is why I'm not the biggest fan. I do like Xasthur quite a bit though, I don't really think his vocals sound like he's crying or screaming in pain, just that they're intensely confused (as is the case with most people's minds when they're depressed: confused), and in that confusion comes anguish. Plus they add to the "dark" atmosphere of the music more. I honestly can't imagine hearing his work with clean, intelligible vocals.

Double awesome! 8) 8) I actually didn't get into them until about three weeks ago. Easily one of my favorite BM bands along with Taake, Deathspell Omega, and Xasthur (despite the hate they get). Also nice SW sig. My friend is really into them. He even writes to the band members about their albums and such, and they often discuss random things in the BM community. :P

Haha, nice man. Those are some real good bands. I'm actually listening to some Xasthur right now. And thanks. You friend sounds like a cool guy. :P

True that. Napalm Death FTW! However the more I listen to grindcore the more I think it's just not that extreme compared to other genres (Slam and Brutal Death eclipse it, and select Black and various artists do as well), which is one of it's selling points. It's an enjoyable genre, but the short, fast songs don't do it as much for me as do the long, crushing songs of Funeral Doom, which is still in my opinion one of the most extreme forms of metal due to it's inaccessibility.

I disagree with you there on the brutal factor in regards to Carcass, although a lot of Brutal Death really is pathetic in terms of intelligent creativity.

I'm not going to link you to Last Days Of Humanity either, despite them being called the most "brutal" band of all time by a lot of people. They're terrible and their "brutality" is done for the sake of being brutal. I honestly think Pandemonic Hyperblast and Castigation and Betrayal by Anaal Nathrakh are the two most brutal songs I've ever listened to. I think Hunt's higher vocals really nail the "person lit with napalm running around screaming and flailing" perfectly. :P

[QUOTE="Saturos3091"] True that. Napalm Death FTW! However the more I listen to grindcore the more I think it's just not that extreme compared to other genres (Slam and Brutal Death eclipse it, and select Black and various artists do as well), which is one of it's selling points. It's an enjoyable genre, but the short, fast songs don't do it as much for me as do the long, crushing songs of Funeral Doom, which is still in my opinion one of the most extreme forms of metal due to it's inaccessibility.St_JimmyX

Pfft. Nothing is more brutal than Carcass's Symphonies of Sickness. Its also not just mindless brutality like 99% of brutal death.

Quit being so stuborn, you're missing out on plenty of great bands:(.

Dude I've been there and done that. I only listen to the absolute best now - the ones who either created genres or contributed to them heavily. Why would I listen to the thousands of other bands out there who are just trying to sound like the originals when I could just listen to the originals?

Metal is my favorite genre. Thrash metal is what I most listen to, especially stuff from the 80's, but I'm open to newer bands.

I honestly find the deep gutteral/sludgy vocals more brutal than high-pitched. However I do think the vocals in Repulsion's Horrified to be perfect in terms of reaching a balance between the two extremes.

EDIT: And that balance is the thrashy type vocals.

So far, I haven't like a song by Agalloch. :? Any albums you recommend to ease into them?

How about Bathory? A little less intense, but still 100% epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDpc-831GPs
