As much as I am glad James didn't win, I actually really wanted to see what kind of Ego-filled speech he would give. :PJazz_FanHe would have repeated a memorable line from Avatar...oh wait, there were no memorable lines... My bad!

Well, in this case the majority of the world seems to agree with my opinion...

And the majority of the world seems to think that Transformers 2 is a better movie than The Shawshank Redemption...

Yes. I pulled out a few movies because it would be absolutely pointless to list ever Best Picture winner which was highly successful commercially.
Most Best Picture winners make quite a bit of money and are seen by a hell of a lot of people, before ever getting nominated.
There is simply no basis in saying that the Academy just likes to award the "underdog". Dark Knight didn't get nominated because it just plain wasn't that good.

In my opinion, The Hurt Locker winning is a combination of James Cameron being viewed as a bit of an arrogant prick within the industry, and Hollywood really, really, really wanting to celebrate an Iraq War film.
At least those are the only reasons I can think of, because The Hurt Locker definitely was not the best movie of the year.
I can't confirm whether or not The Hurt Locker was the best film, but I can confirm that Up, Up in the Air, and Inglorious Basterds were all better films than AvatarOf the 9 Best Picture nominees I've seen, I would rank them:
1. A Serious Man
2. Avatar
3. Up
4. District 9
5. Up in the Air
6. Inglourious Basterds
7. The Hurt Locker
8. An Education
9. Precious
My favorite film of the year was (500) Days of Summer.
The Hurt Locker was a good film, in my opinion, but not great.

Well, I haven't seen Transformers 2, so I can't judge, but The Shawshank Redemption is seriously overrated, in my opinion.

What the hell?
It's like they just posted a transcript of the whole movie...
You missed out first ever female director oscar, and american vs. canadian director., and oscar-bait movie vs. action movie.

What the what? Did you really just call The Hurt Locker -- a movie that was released during the summer blockbuster season, gave its biggest-name cast member an almost inconcequential role and went out of its way to avoid "taking sides" in the Iraq war debate -- Oscar bait? Especially considering that Avatar is, as MetroidPrimePwn so eloquently put it, "Dances with Smurfs...In SSPAAAAACEEE!!!"?

One thing I will give the Academy credit for this year is that they didn't nominate the big Oscar-bait films like Invictus and The Young Victoria for Best Picture.

The dartboard they use to select the best-picture nominees must've been upside-down.
It's the only way to explain A Serious Man getting nominated. A movie that good having a shot at best picture is a mistake that I'm hoping The Academy fixes very shortly :P

Not every oscar bait movie needs to star George Clooney taking sides in the Iraq war to be oscar bait. And on the subject of originality, the Iraq war has never been covered before in film, huh? Originality isn't the top criteria for a good movie.I just wanted to come in and say I am so happy tonight. My picks all won. I made some decent money. WOohoo!Sajedeneyou degenerate gambler :P
