Thankfully, nothing all that scary has ever happened to me, or at least nothing that turned out unexplained.

However, last summer, my brother (18) and I were home alone. Around 10 am, my dog started barking. I just figured it was nothing, and told her to calm down, but she just wouldn't stop. I stepped outside briefly and saw nothing in any direction. I went back in and told my dog to be quiet, then gave her a treat to calm her down. She took the treat and spat it right out, then resumed barking. Ten minutes later, she stopped briefly, probably because her throat hurt. The strangest thing, though was her refusal to step outside. Normally, she prefers barking in the backyard to barking inside.

A few minutes later, my dog stopped barking, and ran to my room in the back of the house. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and my brother and I were too afraid to answer it. I snuck into the living room and looked outside. What I saw was simply amazing: a Mormon was trying to sell their religion to us! In a non-soliciting neighborhood! The nerve!

So, my brother called the cops and had the Mormons kicked out of our neighborhood. The end.

(Yes, that is my dog.)

I figured the dark, chilling mood of this thread could use some lightening up, consider me comic relief.

5:30 here. I need to find some scary stories.

Edit: Anyone remember that haunted box on eBay from January-ish? I just found that again:

http://www.dibbukbox.com/

From what I remember, that was a pretty scary story.

If you all remember, I posted the story about the man at the Hotel, which was generally well recieved, so...now I'd like to make a personal request.

I love creepypasta having to do with...folklore, I guess you could call it, stories like The Holders Series and stuff (if anyone knows what that is). I'm looking for a broader term, but I'll post a couple of what I'm generally looking for, then maybe you guys can help out.

PS: I love creepypasta about mirrors. I have no idea why.

At 12:17 am, on any given night, arises the opportunity to awaken an alternate soul. The most common way of viewing them? Through a mirror.

It is through said medium that the process must take place. Begin at exactly midnight. By no light but that of a single candle, stand before the selected mirror. For ten minutes you must concentrate in silence, focused entirely on your reflection. Do not look away from the eyes; for it will be interpreted as weakness and you will be overcome.

After ten minutes have passed you must draw blood to smear in a line across the eyes of your reflection. Doing so will blind it, and you will watch as your own features begin to warp. Slowly, gradually, they will mutate into a frightening creature--one beyond the comprehension of those who have not experienced it. You must not look away through the entirety of the change.

Soon the writhing movements of the image will cease. By now an echoing, inhuman sound will resound all around you--the creature will begin to ease toward the mirror's glass. You must keep watching as it approaches.

If you do not extinguish the candle at exactly 12:17, the creature will escape.

Be warned, should you succeed; through any polished surface--be it mirror, wood, or window--your reflection will always be watching.

At the edge of the Pacific ocean, on some abandoned beach in the tropics, there is a large, smooth rock that sits just beyond the reach of the highest tides. It is not cracked or marked in any way, and the smooth black stone reflects even the faintest of light. It's curved and formed in just such a way that if you are very careful, you can climb on top of it from the side, and stand on a flat area at the top.

If you stand on the rock when the moon is full and shining, and the water is at its highest point, you can see something in the sea below you. A faint shimmer of light, a flash of something you can't quite identify. It gets brighter, easier to see as you kneel down and lean closer, over the edge of the rock.

Once you are leaning out further than would probably be safe, your left leg will slip on the slippery stone, and you will fall forward into the light. There is no splash, no sound; you simply disappear into the ocean.

No one knows what happens after you disappear. But there are some who claim to have fallen off the same rock, what seems like a lifetime ago. According to the earthly calendar, they were gone for one day, then washed up on another beach, sometimes half a world away. But their eyes are hardened, and they rarely speak anymore, only occasionally muttering of fiery paths and gibbering demons.

Folklore eh?

My friend who's Irish told me about the Hellfire Club in Ireland, not far from Dublin.

It was/is a cabin on a hill out in the forest pretty far from any towns. Travellers and hunters used to lodge there at night, since it was too far to trek back to any inns. The legend goes that one night a bunch of hunters were there having a few drinks, sitting around the table and playing cards (as was the norm). There was a stranger standing in the corner of the room and nobody knew who he was. He was quiet, didn't say much and looked pretty menacing. Nevertheless, they invited him to play a few rounds with them. The stranger was pretty good and kept winning. During a shuffle, the guy sitting adjacent to the stranger dropped a card on the floor. As he went to pick it up, he noticed the strangest thing. The stranger didn't have any shoes on. In fact, he didn't have any feet. There were hooves instead!
He jumped up in shock, and the stranger realising this, suddenly made the entire building combust. The whole place burnt down along with everyone in it. The building's remains are still on the hill. Nothing will grow near it, nor will any animals get close to it o.O

Yeah, I know. It always makes you think "what if?", like when you're home alone and you walk past that empty room no one ever uses, it's pitch black inside and the door opened just a crack... and you get that eery feeling and try not to look inside...

"

"In almost every building, there is one corner, one small enclosure that no one ever looks at. It's the corner in the basement that has been blocked by a disused sofa for years; the thin space in the attic between the wall and the stacks and stacks of crates full of junk you never use, but could never throw away. The space that never sees the light of day, or any other kind of light at all. Where darkness does not merely dominate, but practically oozes out from around the edges of its prison.

No one knows quite how long a space must remain concealed for it to acquire this particular property, nor if there are any specific conditions it must meet. But it is a far more common occurrence than you might think.

In newer buildings, when this happens, the residents often report feeling cold when passing by, even in attics during the hottest of summers. Whenever contemplating taking a quick peek to see if there is anything actually there, an unnatural dread seizes them, and they leave the room quickly, if not quite running. Once left behind, the feeling passes, and it is quickly forgotten, or laughed off.

What actually happens in these forgotten sanctuaries of the dark? It is impossible to tell. For while many such corners have been exposed to reveal absolutely nothing, some brave souls have lost their sanity through nothing more than an ill-timed glance. The safest thing to do when encountered with such a phenomenon; close your eyes, rip away the area's covering in a single motion, then keep a tight hold on what you've pulled away. No matter what you hear or feel, do not get up, do not look around, and do not try to cover your ears. You might be one of the lucky ones."

I love folklore/urban legends as well.

On any night with a full moon, open up iTunes, winamp, windows media player, or whatever you may use to listen to music on the computer. Put the player on shuffle, and at exactly 12:00 AM, start shuffling through your songs. Eventually, the player will land on a file called "This is your problem now.mp3"

Close your eyes and wait. For a minute, there will be silence, and after that, horrible screams of agony and torture will come from your computer speakers. Do NOT open your eyes, or images of the most incomprehensible evil will appear in your mind. For seven minutes, the screams will continue, becoming louder and worse every moment. Finally, when all goes silent again, open your eyes.

You will be in a subway, sitting on a bench next to a man. The man will offer you a cigarette-- if you refuse, you will wake up in your chair, and it will only be 12:01 AM. It will be as if nothing ever happened.

However, if you accept, he will light it for you, and then he will tell you all the secrets of life, and the universe. After he finishes, you will wake up in your chair, still with the knowledge the man gave you. Most people go insane from knowing, however, and many have killed themselves.

It's rumoured that in Singapore, there's a bus 444. It comes once every month, stopping at stops which have buses 12 and 21 there. It's said that on the bus, there's always a man. He never gets off, and is forever awake. Next to him, there's always a nun. The nun will forever be trying to preach him to turn good. She will never go until he does as told. He will never leave until she leaves.

There's also a very pretty girl who boards the bus every now and then. If you get on board with the sole purpose to look at the people there, you will die. Halfway through the ride, a little girl in Gothic Lolita clothes will come and get you. You'll find yourself paralyzed in fear. The next thing you know, you're back where you boarded the bus, repeating what happened to you over and over again for 15 minutes before you die. If you boarded the bus on accident, the girl will spare you. She has red eyes, and she'll turn her eyes to you. You'll feel a part of your body paralyze. It will never move again. If the pretty girl who boards the bus every now and then is there, the little girl will not harm you, no matter what your intention is.

Fine, another one. I actually considered trying this at my birthday two weeks ago.

On the night of your birthday, any birthday, go downtown to the worst part of town. Walk to the bus stop, and wait a few mintues. A bus will apper, and the doors will swing open. Walk on and pay the bus fare and take a seat. Then ride the bus, don't get off. Then you'll see younger versions of yourself start getting on the bus everytime it stops.
Finally, when all versions of yourself are on the bus (ex. Your 39, 38 versions), the bus will stop once more. The driver will then yell last stop, and all of you will exit the bus in front of a house. Walk in the front door and you'll be greeted by future versions of yourself. You can only talk to one about what happens, and they can only talk about what happened to themself on their year.
After speaking with one, you must leave the house. Do not talk to anyone else. If you do, your future will be destroyed, and those versions you saw will be murdered.

Aw man, I love threads like these. I'm kind of an creepypasta-addict. I've read every story in this thread, nice job guys. Time for me to share some favorite stories. I think this one was written by a very very insane boy a long time ago.
_______________________

The images we see in the mirror are the pure incarnates of evil. They are only allowed to exist in the area reflected in the glass. To them, life is like a neverending hell, rotting away in the same room day after day. The only refuse from this purgatory is death, and the only way for them to die, sad to say, is if YOU die.

Fortunately, they are bound by a code. You are their master, and they must mirror your every movement and expression. To do otherwise would break an unbreakable law, unravelling the space-time continuum. However, there is a loophole, and it can only be triggered by you, the master. To force them into error is to free them from their contract; after you let them out of your view, you're on your own. Know this: when you watch them, they're watching you back. They're watching. And they're thinking.

~
A note to the daring:
The next time you're alone in your room, turn down the lights. Think of something on your body that varies in length, such as hair. It must be clearly viewable from your perspective. Grab a ruler and, looking in the mirror, quickly grab a hair at random; you must confuse it. Hold it in position as best you can and note the length. Look down. Yours will be different.

Don't look back up.

Don't turn your back to that mirror ever again.
~

The next time you wake up groggy and tired, don't move. Take a glance at your mirror; if you're lucky, you might catch a smile.

Wanna hear an old one? Thump, Thump, Drag...

Ashley, a 16 year old girl, was babysitting 2 little boys. Their parents weren't supposed to come home until very late, so she put them to bed and sat downstairs in the living room to watch some TV. She was flipping channels and came to the evening news. The Anchor-woman reported a warning for her area. She said that a mental patient had escaped from a nearby facility and was on the run from the local athorities. Ashley flipped the channel again to find an old movie she hadn't seen in a while, but always enjoyed. By the end of the film, she had forgotten about the news report.

Upstairs one of the boys woke up. He thought he heard a noise coming from the hallway. Thump, thump, draaaag....

The child thought that Ashley must be watching TV, the sound must have been from the program she was watching.

The boy heard the sound again and woke his brother. Together, they listened at the door to the bedroom and the sound kept coming thump, thump, draaaag...thump, thump, drag....

The sound stopped but the boys were still nervous about leaving the saftey of their bedroom. They got back into bed and stayed under the covers until their parents got home.

When their parents came in the house they were struck by a greusome sight. Ashley was laying halfway up the stairs with a trail of blood behind her. Her arms were cut off at the elbows and she'd been climbing the stairs on the bloody stumps of her arms, pulling her badly injured body along to protect the children before she died of blood loss.

Ashley's attacker was never found!

I'm keeping this damn thread alive! Live I say! LIVE! *Thunder and lightning!*

Many classic horror icons, such as Geger's Xenomorphs, Silent Hill's Pyramid Head, and other disturbing creatures, share common characteristics. Pale skin, dark, sunken eyes, elongated faces, sharp teeth, and the like. These images inspire horror and revulsion in many, and with good reason. The characteristics shared by these faces are imprinted in the human mind.

Many things frighten humans instinctively. The fear is natural, and does not need to be reinforced in order to terrify. The fears are species-wide, stemming from dark times in the past when lightning could mean the burning of your tree home, thunder could be the approaching gallops of a stampede, predators could hide in darkness, and heights could make poor footing lethal.

The question you have to ask yourself is this:

What happened, deep in the hidden eras before history began, that could effect the entire human race so evenly as to give the entire species a deep, instinctual, and lasting fear of pale beings with dark, sunken eyes, razor sharp teeth, and elongated faces?

... Just be careful out there.

I'm going to assume you've read Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke?

No I haven't, I found that on a website. But I'm going to have to read that now, aren't I?

" Coffins used to be built with holes in them, attached to six feet of copper tubing and a bell. The tubing would allow air for victims buried under the mistaken impression they were dead. Harold, the Oakdale gravedigger, upon hearing a bell, went to go see if it was children pretending to be spirits. Sometimes it was also the wind. This time it wasn't either. A voice from below begged, pleaded to be unburied.

"You Sarah O'Bannon?" Yes! the voice assured.
"You were born on September 17, 1827?"
"Yes!"
"The gravestone here says you died on February 19?"
"No I'm alive, it was a mistake! Dig me up, set me free!"

"Sorry about this, ma'am," Harold said, stepping on the bell to silence it and plugging up the copper tube with dirt. "But this is August. Whatever you is down there, you ain't alive no more, and you ain't comin' up." "

You should, its theme is very similar to your question. The "frightening" thing is a little different, though. Either way, an excellent book. :P Something Wicked This Way Comes is a good creepy/fantasy novel by Ray Bradbury.

The Dark Character

"When I first heard about Bloody Mary, I got excited. I told my friends about it but they didn't seem to care. I asked them to help me summon her and they said "yeah-yeah"... but they didn't! I am the only one who likes these kind of things so I was going to try it on my own. I was headed to the bathroom with a candle when I stopped because I didn't dare to do it alone. Incidentally, I have seen someone in mirrors, and it's always the same character I see every time.

One time when I was at my buddy's house, I stopped in front of a mirror hanging in the hallway. It was almost midnight and the hallway was dark. I looked closely in the mirror when I noticed that I almost couldn't see my face anymore, it was like looking through someone else's glasses. Then, I saw this huge, shadowy character, at least two meters tall. I looked closer in the mirror and this dark character was right behind me! I quickly turned around. Nobody was there.

I looked at the mirror again. Nothing wrong this time. Then unexpectedly, I almost blacked out. I had to sit down and breath slowly. The guys in the living room were wondering what happened. I said it was nothing, because they would laugh at me if I told them the mirror nearly made me black-out.

I've seen it, again and again. No ball of light, no girl, no bloody faces or babies. No stairs, no teddy bears. But the shadowy, dark, huge character is standing behind me every time I look into a mirror in dim light! Maybe I will try to summon Bloody Mary, I'm almost convinced that she will appear or this thing stalking me will appear. But I need to wait until my friends gather some courage... I just don't dare to do it alone..."

Once I was walking down a dirty downtrodden street in Chicago, but here was something different about it, there were no people outside. However there were thousands up thousands of dark red eyes staring at me from the windows, but for some odd reason i did not turn back. I kept on walking on and on until ii reached a dead end that ended in an alleyway. All of the sudden there was a large object sitting in my pocket. I pulled it out it was large pistol, but it was covered in strange almost demonic carvings. Then a man steps out in front of me and says "You know what you must do to live, do you not." he then points at the wall blocking my path and a door appeared, I step through it. I look up to the sky and see that is an unnatural shade of red, and Chicago looks more like something you'd find in H.P.Lovecraft novel. That's when the voices started. They yelled "KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL, IT, OR WE WILL DIE!" So I finally look down at the street their is another man ina dark-red trench coat staring at me, some supernatural force makes me raise the Gun and shoot him. Just as the bullet strikes the target I wake up in my own bed. Thinking it was just a bad dream I head to the bathroom to was up. As I was brushing my teeth I noticed a a paper lying on the other side, that was not on my side. I looked at it and scrawled in dark red ink were the words thank you.

That one with the girl and her dog under the bed was quite good but honestly you could tell the difference between a human lick and a dog lick.

In the winter of 1944, with overtaxed supply lines in the Ardennes, a medic in the German army had completely run out of plasma, bandages and antiseptic. During one particularly bad round of mortar fire, his encampment was a bloodbath. Those who survived claimed to have heard, above the screams and barked commands of their Lieutenant, someone cackling with almost girlish glee.
The medic had made his rounds during the fire, in almost complete darkness as he had so many times before, but never had he been this short on supplies. No matter. He would do his duty. He had always prided himself on his resourcefulness.
The bombardment moved to other ends of the line, and most men dropped off to sleep in the dark, still hours of the morning - New Year's Day, 1945. The men awoke at first light with screams. They discovered that their bandages were not typical bandages at all, but hunks and strips of human flesh. Several men had been given fresh blood transfusions, yet there had been no blood supplies available. Each treated man was almost completely covered, head-to-toe, with the maroon stain of blood.
The medic was found, sitting on an ammunition tin, staring off into space. When one man approached him, and tapped him on the shoulder, his tunic fell off to reveal that large patches of his skin, muscle, and sinew had been stripped from his torso and his body was almost completely dried of blood. In one hand was a scalpel, and in the other, a blood transfusion vial. None of the men treated for wounds that night, in that camp, saw the end of January, 1945.
