Federal law would supersede the state law even if Proposition 19 was to get past. Whether or not that is a good thing is an entirely different matter.

personally I hope it passes, but then again considering that the federal government said it will still enforce federal law concerning pot it would seem that it doesn't really matter whether it passes or not.

here's what I think will happen, I think legal recreational use of marijuana will cause mass tourism to California and substantial tax revenues, and after a year goes by and the state tax revenues are revealed then other states will be eager to catch up themselves, then hopefully one day the federal government will legalize it meaning GameSpot will finally allow us to say something like "this game is sooo much effing fun to play while stoned, blah-blah-blah"... yeah, legalize it

I say legalize it. It's relatively harmless and I think it's ridiculous people are going to jail for distributing it. Plus the government gets money off of taxing it. Pretty much everybody wins.

actually drug legislation is worth the time and money, putting people in jail for marijuana possession and sale is a waste of money, it costs money to arrest people, take them to court, convict and house them in prisons for years, yes that all costs lots and lots of money, a large fraction of the state budget for that matter, so yeah it's a time and money issue just read up on things like the prison industrial complex and how the "war on drugs" has played into it, that's a real waste of time and money

lol I know Huh? ALl the people that vote no against it are all misinformed who fell to the propaganda of it all. Im not even a stoner, so dont just try to accuse stoners of the only ones voting for it. Im pretty sure, itll raise money for the state, itll keep petty crimes out of jail. only bad thing is itll be taxed heavily but o well haha.

Not in California. You get a fine there unless you have a fairly large amount (which you'd still get arrested for even if this passed.)

Yes contrary to popular belief this law does not turn California into a stoners paradise. If anything it seems like it'd do the opposite.

You will still get in trouble for having too much on you (the law only allows to a certain amount)

You have a backyard full of marijuana plants? Illegal still.

Selling it to your buddies who are under 21? 5+ years jail.

Selling it without a license and probably without a store? Illegal

Smoking it outside of your house? Illegal still.

If anything cops before didn't care a ton about Marijuana. Yes they'd charge you if they happened to find you had some but they really weren't actively patrolling for it. This law would sort of require them to now care about marijuana and harass you where as before they did not.

Also your poor dealer will be out of a job.

I'll be voting for it today.

If it passes, the drug cartels' California income will vanish overnight, we'll stop wasting money jailing people who aren't a harm to society, and we'll gain some tax revenue.

Also, it should rightly be a persons own decision whether they want to smoke a particular herb, not the government's.

Likewise; though I don't indulge myself, I see no reason for it to be prohibited. I had asked before but can't recall the answer; if it passes, I wonder if the ToU for CA-based Gamespot will be updated to allow discussion of marijuana use. If so, God help OT.

I'm a little perplexed as to why the DEA still enforces federal law in California even though Obama stated he wanted states to decide without federal intervention on the issue of marijuana legality, in fact Obama's Drug Czar used to be my city's Police Chief and he had a pretty progressive stance on marijuana issues, I think he's been rather quiet about his stance on the federal authority when it comes to state law on this issue, rather he's let the DEA and Justice Department make the decisions, I'm hoping he's more vocal if Prop 19 passes and am eager to see what he has to say about it.

And if it passed, goes to the supreme court, and gets turned down you will have a very very tough time ever getting it legalized in your lifetime.

I voted "No" on Proposition 19. To me, the bad outweighs the good. If Prop 19 passes, you'll have an entire wave of people driving high, partying high, and all sorts of other things you need a clear head for. If people drive drunk and party drunk, you can bet they'll drive high and party high. Kids can get ahold of alcohol with relative ease-- they'll be able to get ahold of marijuana with relative ease. Sorry, but pot is not the way to solve the state's financial problems.

Its different from alcohol because anything with alcohol in it can be taken responsibly and when you take weed, thats it your high and whacked out for a couple of hours. It would be more dangerous for someone who just had weed to be driving than a guy who had beer. And it distracts people from more important than will effect the US in bigger ways. Personally I'm not the one who needs to take drugs to feel better, i find better and healthier ways to do that. ;)

Quite true. And I like what you said about not needing drugs to feel better. Nobody needs drugs to feel better.

People already party high, drive high, and kids already can get ahold of marijuana with relative ease. Sucks, but it's true. It's less of a problem of it being dangeous, but more of a problem of it being being so common and not as harmful as heroin, crack, etc. It's rather asinine to hunt pot smokers down.

As it is, marijuana is more available to kids than alcohol because an entire undergroud distribution system has developed around it. That distribution system will be obliterated by Prop 19 because the potential for illegal profits will no longer exist.

100,000 people die every year in the US from alcohol health effects alone, more than all illegal drugs combined. marijuana kills 0. And you think alcohol can be taken more responsibly? Plenty of people already drive high, you dont see accidents involving it at all. People report they are more cautious, Although I agree it is bad to drive under the influence of anything. Good for you if you dont want drugs. No need to push your beliefs onto others. We dont need the government to tell us what we can and cant put into our body.
