"a being without compassion, without sympathy, without the care of the people who they say they love equally...that person is not a god, that person is a tyrant"
I'd probably quote Epicurus.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
Or maybe i'd ask, Why give Humankind Intelligence then punish us for using it?
Lets say you die, heaven, Jesus Christ, etc... Everything you've doubted turns out to be real. You are now in the presence of the almighty father. What are your final words before you're sent to hell?BananaMuffyso i dont believe and i get sent to hell for not doing anything wrong in my life??? wanna really know what i have to say to this?
I'd say to God: "So where are my Super Saiyan Powers I prayed so much for when I was a kid?"
To which God would banish me to Hell where I would chill with the cool people in a warm jacuzzi full of demonic sexy girls. :D Awwwww YEEEEEE!
[QUOTE="RisethNameless"][QUOTE="BananaMuffy"]Haha I swear some of you atheists are hardcore believers of nothin. Just looking at some of these post shows me a number of you are more sensitive than any christians you love overexaggerating about. What a ruthless and judgemental bunch. harashawnRutheless and Judgemental? Isn't that pretty much the definition of a Christian? Not a proper Christian. One of Jesus' most well known teachings is not to judge others. Wow, wasn't Jesus a clever cookie...
[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Fuсk you God!TylendalI'd rather be partying with compassionate and kind blasphemers in hell than sully myself with the company of repented criminals in heaven. Hell isn't the place that you find joy in it. That's defeats the purpose of hell.
I think a lot of people bragging about how they would party in Hell don't realise that the popular theory of Hell with some believers is the experience feeds on what you hate the most and pumps it your way 24/7. In other words if you hate snakes you'll be walking around with nothing but snakes around youand if you hateJustinBieberBaby would be playing forever.
But of course none of us know the truth and for all we know Hell doesn't exist. Or it does exist but God only sends the Hitlers and the bin Ladens of the world there. After thousands of years even if the Bible was based on real events that huge gap in time could have caused things to get left out or added that was or wasn't originally there. Especially with translations.
"Well, you can't realistically blame me for not believing, and I don't think I have to explain to you why. After all, those who worship you, are pretty hard to take seriously. Also, if the Christians in Heaven are anything like the ones on Earth, please do me a favor and send me to hell."

men isn't god nice to take such effort in torturing us all eternity, good thing hes all love.

Considering Hell is described as a "lake of fire", and is canonically known as the place where souls go to be tormented for all eternity, I really don't think it would be an enjoyable experience.[QUOTE="trastamad03"]Considering Hell is described as a "lake of fire", and is canonically known as the place where souls go to be tormented for all eternity, I really don't think it would be an enjoyable experience.I'd say to God: "So where are my Super Saiyan Powers I prayed so much for when I was a kid?"

Then again, neither would the perpetual adulation of some hitherto unseen deity for all of eternity. Think about it: The rest of your life is nothing but the first thirty minutes of a church service. Millions and millions of years of nothing but fellating the ego of some ass. That sounds terrible. Why do christians want that?

The idea of Heaven is described as "eternal bliss". Revelation is not really considered canonical; but is seen as a book of metaphores. Either way, I'd prefer that over eternal damnation.[QUOTE="Frattracide"][QUOTE="harashawn"]The idea of Heaven is described as "eternal bliss". That sounds like it would be pretty good to me.harashawn

Do Christians seriously believe people deserve eternal damnation for nothing more than thinking the majesty of God's work doesn't need a theistic creator running things behind the scenes? How can it be claimed that a God who treats people like that is benevolent? If such a petty tyrant were to exist I'd be enraged; He doesn't deserve to be credited with such a complicated, beautiful universe. I don't understand how anyone can believe in a God whose primarily concerned with whether or not some carbon water bags worship him, judging those who came to the wrong conclusion to be deserving of torture. Such a being would be worthy of nothing but contempt.
I personally don't believe this is the message of Christianity at all. There's no history of such ideas in Judaism; righteous gentiles will be looked after in the kingdom of God. This even crops up in Jesus' parable of the mustard seed.
For context, I'm an atheist who has not been raised in any religious tradition.

I agree with this. I think it spreads a good message which is unfortunately overlooked by some Christians.
Plus, God's a psychopath.
I'm not entirely sure what Christianity stands for. There has been so many different interpretations since its conception that I've lost count.Do Christians seriously believe people deserve eternal damnation for nothing more than thinking the majesty of God's work doesn't need a theistic creator running things behind the scenes? The God a disturbingly large number of Christians believe in certainly is.

Well not everyone finds the same thing disturbing. Besides assuming that God all-knowing, I think it's ridiculous to criticized god. It's akin of a student criticizing a teacher.[QUOTE="ColdExistence"]I'm not entirely sure what Christianity stands for. He responded with "love thy neighbor as yourself." Actually he was ask what is the greatest commandments. He also reply "love god with all your heart". That's two most impotent commandments.

[QUOTE="harashawn"] Revelation is not really considered canonical; but is seen as a book of metaphores. foxhound_foxOkay, then why are other chapters taken literally? Why couldn't "heaven" and "hell" merely be metaphors for states of mind here on Earth? And Jesus' resurrection a symbol for the death of the ego and the rebirth of the divine consciousness in this body? Who said they can't be?

According to the new revised standard translation at least.

If one wanted to, one could construe the Bible in such a way that it supports absolutely anything. I can't find anything in the Gospels suggesting Jesus supported eternal damnation for unbelievers though. Wailing and gnashing of teeth crops up a couple of times (lazarus and the rich man, i think, as well as one of the versions of the banquet parable) but it seems to be more concerning behaviour than theology. And if anything the use of "eternal life" in John's gospel suggests nothing more than oblivion for non-believers, which would have been more in line with Jewish philosophy at the time.
