Soccer is running America into the ground, and there is very little anyone can do about it. Social critics have long observed that we live in a therapeutic society that treats young people as if they can do no wrong. Every kid is a winner, and nobody is ever left behind, no matter how many times they watch the ball going the other way. Whether the dumbing down of America or soccer came first is hard to say, but soccer is clearly an important means by which American energy, drive, and competitiveness is being undermined to the point of no return.

What other game, to put it bluntly, is so boring to watch? (Bowling and golf come to mind, but the sound of crashing pins and the sight of the well-attired strolling on perfectly kept greens are at least inherently pleasurable activities.) The linear, two-dimensional action of soccer is like the rocking of a boat but without any storm and while the boat has not even left the dock. Think of two posses pursuing their prey in opposite directions without any bullets in their guns. Soccer is the fluoridation of the American sporting scene.

Source.

Well, USA had a good run.

I've played soccer, baseball and hockey my whole life, and can soundly say Soccer is by far the most intense sport. Won the NJ state championship my senior year in High School, good times, good times...

Can't say I disagree. I rather watch golf and an entire NASCAR race than a soccer match.

Okay. Sure. A physical activity that fights childhood obesity and promotes good self-esteem for children is what is ruining America. Please.

Maybe the attitude used in youth soccer that no one loses and stuff is bad,but that is the attitude, not the game. I am a fan of the MLS,and i watch a bit of south american soccer, especially from mexico and let me tell you, that attitude is NOT part of the game.

It brings in money, it's getting more people involved in sport, more people into a job. Many more posotives. Only negatives I can think of is what football (soccer) usually brings to countries and that is just hooligans and violence, but I would not say that is major it has not been there as long as other countries have had it so I would not think you have the passion of others such as Argentina/England/Italy. Fueds between their fans go 100's years back, to do with religion, past civil wars, past events, sometimes just because of geographical location.

You have not a clue TC

Don't forget the South American tournaments which sometimes have better atmospheres than the Champions League and the World Cup.

Ok, I seriously dont understand those who say Soccer is a boring sport. I just dont get it. It is easily one of the most exciting sports there are. I dont get why only Americans dont seem to get excited when watching Soccer. On the other hand, I watch American Football and I find it more boring than Golf.

I guess maybe its a cultural thing. Im not american BTW.

Running non-stop trying to figure a plan on the fly to reach the opponent's area and try to score. Waaaaaaay better than. Stop, Make a strategy, arrange players, pass ball, pass ball again, fall to the ground, repeat.

Nothing happens that's why. It's just running around and praying that someone actually scores at least once before time's up. It's fun to play it, but just extremely boring to watch. The reason we like our football better is because of the hits, strategy, big plays, and more scoring. We also have plenty of other sports to watch like the MLB, NBA, NCAAB, NCAAF, the NHL, and so on. Soccer just can't compete.

And why is soccer the most played sport in the world? Why does it have it's own World CUp where over 30 countries compete? Why does it have the most fans around the globe? Why are all those leagues local to only the US and maybe Canada? Why isn't there a renowned world championship about those sports?

Because all you need is a ball to play. It's so much less expensive that it's easier to get involved in. All most people have is soccer, so what else are they going to like? Over here we have more choices, and thus soccer gets phased out. We're also much more isolated out here and so don't have any rivalries with foreign countries, so that also plays a role in it.

I thought that the article was a satire, a joke, something to be taken in jest. But it appears that the author was deadly serious. I think that he should direct his jeremiad on people like him rather than on the game itself. It is only in North America that soccer is the sole pursuit of the wealthy and well off. Almost anywhere else on earth it is a game of teh poor and working class. Soccer isn't a prestige sport, but the only way to truly experience the sport in America is with clubs that require huge financial expenditures on the part of the parents before their kid plays for a decent team. There isn't that pick up and play aspect that is so prevalent in many countries and with many sports such as Basketball and American Football. Having said that I take exception.

It is idiots like this that come in contact with soccer every four years when their local news broadcast clips of the world cup. The fact that a professional football league exist has only just entered the minds of most americans within the last two years with the Beckham circus. Soccer is not a sport only for women; hell, the reason that Americans associate soccer with women is because the macho nature of the game has led to the exclusion of women from traditional powerhouses of soccer all over the world. Isn't it interesting that the best women teams in the world come from places where soccer isn't part of the culture. For years China and America were by far the most dominant force in world women soccer. It is only recently that traditional powerhouses such as Brazil, Germany, England, et al are focusing on the women's game. The culture where soccer isn't a big deal were able to invest equal amount of money and time to developing the women's national team, and since there really isn't any professional league for women worth its salt the country that poured the most money into the women's team reaped the biggest reward. And since the countries that invest equally in both men and women national team were traditionally those where the game hasn't really took hold their women's team were able to crush those from traditional powerhouses who neglect their women's game because in those countries Soccer is viewed specifically as a man's game.

Second it is not a boring game nor is it a game were draws and penalty shootouts are common. In a league game there is never, I repeat, never any penalty shootout. Yes a penalty is awarded for a foul inside of the 18yard box, but a game never goes into a penalty shootout in a league game. Soccer is a contact sport, yes that is true, and referees often blow the whistle too quickly for some slight challenges. But when a tackle is capable of doing this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_VT8m02Izc

then you understand the abundance of caution in a game that has no protective padding for its players outside of an ineffective shin guard. Soccer is a game that features the most injuries. It might be anything from a strain ankle, deep muscle bruising, to tendon tears, and limb threatening bone breaks. Soccer is not for the faint of heart. To label it as a boring game because all your exposure to it is watching your children play it is just freaking ridiculous.

So no, Soccer isn't ruining America. If the author wants to know what is ruining America he should turn the mirror in himself. It is people like himwith a distinct lack of intellectual honesty that have brought America to its knees.

I like soccer, but just because I like soccer doesn't make me want to go out of my way to denounce sports that don't interest me. I don't denounce Nascar, American Football, Baseball, Ice Hockey, or Basketball. Hell I like watching them from time to time, but a more competent argument can be made that anyone of those are ruining America, they are more prevalent, they are games that everyone in America either plays, is aware off, or aspire to be a professional in. These are games where most Americans say that they look up to its players despite numerous scandals; drugs for example. Despite all that I don't think or even entertain the thought that these sports are ruining America.

NFL only has more scoring because you have higher point for getting the ball in the area, how can a game compete when it has to score 7 in order to even up one "goal" from the other game. as for the stratergy argument, its interesting, both sports are full of stratergy, but nfls is more obvious, where as soccer is more subtle. mind you, if anysport is boring its baseball.

but, i think there is one sport that doesnt get enough credit in the US. field hockey, its a tough sport.

I'm not sure what you mean. Even if a team scores 21, they still scored 3 TDs. So the team is scoring more often in comparison to a soccer team. I'm not saying soccer doesn't have strategy, because it does, but in the NFL it is more apparent like you said. Since there are so many types of plays that can be ran, you can argue that it's more complex too. Also since there is a stoppage between each down, these plays actually have a chance of being executed unlike in soccer where you have to set it up during the game.

I actually find baseball to be the most tense sport to watch. With one swing of the bat, the entire scoreboard can be flipped.

I wish that cricket was as huge as baseball in America, even as huge as mls. Cricket, a game that I barely undertand, is a cousin of baseball or its grandpa, but it is very fun and exciting to watch.

Is this a joke? What suburban American child didn't play soccer while growing up?

I'll attest to that, i'd rather watch golf, bowling, even darts rather than baseball. Nascar on the other hand may be more boring than baseball it's pretty much a toss up for me. I don't care for soccer myself, but i think that's because i didn't play it, so i don't really understand the strategy involved. I have watched an entire soccer match(world cup mind you) but i haven't watched an entire baseball game.

haha, i forgot about nascar, as much is i quite like motorsport (without beign a rev head) i just cant watch nascar for long, yet i watch F1.

anyway, more people need to watch field hockey, its a faster, shorter high scoring game than soccer, with the added bonus of having to control your stick. and you can only use your stick, unlike in soccer where you just can use your arms.

Soccer is cool, I don't play it or go out of my way to watch it or anything, but I catch alot of the games during the world cup. I personally think golf is much more boring of a sport.

 What? the only time a player can touch the ball with his hands/arms is at a throw in, not counting the goalkeeper (and only inside the area) or maybe you're referring when the ball is not on play.
