The fact that America wants to play rugby with protective gear instead makes it the worst country in the western world...by far.

I love when people say soccer is ruining the US and its so damn boring, then they turn around and watch The Super Bowl. In American Football you spend more time huddled in a group going over a play than actually playing the damn game! Why do you need to stop after each player goes down? Cant you guys think on the run? Do you really need to huddle after everyplay, cant you have a game plan that spans more than 1 play? Short memory spans? American Football is one of the most boring sports (up there with golf, cricket and croquette) to watch, and pretty damn boring to play too.

Rugby players don't hit as hard as they could because they don't ware protective equipment. Helmets allow players to be a little more care free with their body. If you were on an American football team and tackled using rugby techniques the coach would have you running laps for being a wuss.

That makes no sense at all.

Wasdie
That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the post. Of course I'm a bit biased, football (soccer) is in my top 3 favorite sports along with Basketball and Tennis. I mean, what's the point watching cars go round and round and round for hours? What's the point of baseball, a sport you can be fat AND performing? Same with Golf a lot of other sports. If anything, soccer has the fittest athletes. The guys run for 90 minutes non stop, basketball, football, hockey and baseball players are sitting on their a**es most of the time. It's the easiest sport to pick up yet the hardest to master because losing the ball to some defender is so easily done. And you need to be in perfect physical condition.

Yeah, if you don't take advantage of the fact that you have protective gear on you're pretty stupid.

Isn't tackling the legs something you generally do when somebody is running at you? :? Or do they teach you to perform diving tackles in the NFL just for the sake of pleasing the fans?

Well, I live in Brazil a country where Soccer is the main sport. People like it so much to the point no other sport is able to develop here. :P

I don't see how a fun sport can ruin a country. I know most Americans prefer Football or Baseball which are two equally amazing sports, but saying a game like soccer ruins a country is too much.

Of course. It's not like it's a sport, or a competition. It's all about making more money from the fans. Just like wrestling.

Oh no, diving tackles are very dangerous, you can easily be knocked out by taking a running backs knee to the head. It was the upright chest to chest tackles that rugby players use I was referring too, I can't tell you what they are called in american football because it is derogatory and would most likely offend someone.

to be fair baseball is FAAAR more boring to watch than soccer... and i think the whole "there's no scoring" point just proves people do not understand the sport. you can have a game be a 0-0 or 1-0 and it was still exciting. as soon as i read the whole "there's not scoring" point in that article i relaized an idiot wrote it.

but i do agree on the general pussification of america in the whole every kid is a winner lets not even keep score bs that is going on.. let the kids freaking play, let them win and let them lose because as adults that is the world they are going to enter.

I've played soccer, baseball and hockey my whole life, and can soundly say Soccer is by far the most intense sport. Won the NJ state championship my senior year in High School, good times, good times...

The trick is not in letting everyone win. The trick is enjoying the game even when you lose. It's about the game, not about the final score.

Futbol=WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seeing the Russians get so far in the Euro cup was awesome, they were cheered by everyone, such a young and inexperienced team to make it that far was pure WIN to watch. I remember being in the office during my summer internship and everybody on the floor was streaming the game from some chinese website, and when someone scored the whole floor exploded. Pure WIN.

I just thought about it, and I now know why soccer isn't popular in america! The players actually have to think for themselves.

Think about it - the two most popular sports are american football and baseball. In each of those sports the coach tells the player exactly what to do. The player only tries his best to execute the orders as good as possible. Sure, in baseball a thrower has to mix up things a bit, but it's all straightforward.

If you try to rely on only what the coach says in soccer, you'll be kicked out of the team for being stupid.

Basketball is more popular than baseball. So is NASCAR. And football requires just as much thought as soccer.

I'm of the opinion Americans don't like football because a large part of the fun of the experiencerequires crowd participation in terms of atmosphere. After being toa Baseball and American football game in the USA I can honestly say (Apart from there being more atmpsphere at some funerals) Americans are too self concious to start any chanting for fear of looking like idiots. I mean this game was 1-0 final score and by watching the video I would like to have you tell me it wasn't entertaining to be there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e45-jt7nqAM . Theres also the fact American sports (uniquely in the world) don't have relegation as they have franchises which takes away from the intensity of feeling you get from the possibility of relegation. It also makes cross city rivalries imposable with there being a restriction to one major team per city. Thats like having No Rangers Vs Celtic ,AC Vs Inter etc etc.Americans basically took football and took away everything that makes it great.

Just a question as I'm not that familiar with the European leagues, is there a big difference between relegation and simply not making the playoffs?

I mean if a team isn't good enough, they don't even get to play in the post season. What's the difference?

Foot + Ball = Football.
Hand + Ball + Throw + Run + Lulz = American Football.

Football > A-Football.
If it's doing something, it's making it a better place. It sure as hell is better than American Football.

Soccer is so lame. I'm glad to see some of my frienda who were actually really good at soccer comeing to play a real sport called football. It has to be the most boring sport to watch. I remember seeing on the news where that guy headbuted that other dude in the chest. That was hilarious and just showed how lame soccer and its' players are in a single action. I do hang out with some soccer people and I have converted three of them into at least playing lacrosse. At least now they can call themselves men and hit some people.

Sorry, but "soccer" is a real sport, no matter what you think.

real as in a sport for men. I don't deny that soccer is not a sport as is underwater hockey. But soccer is just not a sport any guy should want to be seen playing. You kick a ball around a giant field for like 3hrs and score a couple of times. Wheres the fun in that. What guy does not want to go around crushing kids out of their mind while playing football, lacrosse or hockey or any other physical sport. And don't say soccer is a physical sport because it is not. Kicking each other in the shins and slide tackling are hardly physical at all. All the soccer players at my school are little weak small kids but at least some of them play lacrosse and hockey.

Who says soccer players are afraid? Also there's plenty of physical duels in soccer, and I can know because I played it for more than 10 years. That's why all successful professional teams also have strength training.

The point is, if you want to beat someone up you muscle up. If you want to do something else than bash heads against each other it's best to be more slim. Besides, being slim doesn't mean no muscles. Also you clearly don't know the difference between white and red muscles. Soccer player's muscles are actually designed to last some time whereas footbal players only have to do any effort for a few seconds. Something called endurance...

That's why every marathon runner is so skinny. If you'd encumber yourself with muscles you're gone before you know it. But apparantly a few seconds of bashing heads is more sport than running around a field for 2x three quarters of an hour .

Seriously, wtf. That article was clearly opinionated and was merely bashing football (soccer) all around. IMO American football is a terrible sport. A bunch of husky players taking breaks every minute or so to think about their plays? Baseball is the same, where is the action? But football (soccer) requires more than just stamina and speed. You require vast foot-eye coordination and not to mention all those foot maneuvers that are done during games. Yes we have hands to control and hold things, but when have YOU ever controlled something with your feet and done it THIS amazing?

Ah man, now I'm anxious for the World Cup next year :D

you obviously have never played football or lacrosse. Some much energy and strength is required just for one play. We train year round just so we can pretty much last 20 plays in a row without passing out. You obviously just don't understand how much effort goes into building muscle to become storing and play harder. For 2 weeks straight we practice for 8-10 hours a day with minimal breaks. We lift a bit run for hours and do numerous drills just to get us in shape for standard practice which involves more drills and hours of learning plays, positioning and running through them all. Has to be the most demanding sport out of any. Also there are plenty are quick football players. All positions require speed and agility and the game is not based on "bashing heads". Creating holes for running backs to run through to gain yards and taking out linebackers in an insanely tiring job in itself as well as being the running back. Also creating time for the quarterback to get a pass off is extremely tiring. The amount of effort that goes into just being ready for a football game is insane as well as actually playing in a game. You clearly just don't understand that football is a much more demanding, physical sport.

If anything, soccer has the fittest athletes. The guys run for 90 minutes non stop, basketball, football, hockey and baseball players are sitting on their a**es most of the time.BaraChat
Just out of curiosity, have you ever watched a hockey game? If you have, you'd realize why hockey players don't play non-stop.

After 2 or 3 minutes of skating up and down the ice, scrambling for the puck, wrestling with other players for possession, forechecking/backchecking... all while wearing about 20-30 pounds of gear... you'd be ready to sit down and recharge, too.

Ever wonder why the goalie has water bottles on his net? If he didn't, he'd collapse (and likely die) of dehydration since he doesn't get a break to sit on the bench.

You're making the point that football is very demanding because you're doing so much work for it. Believe me, most sports are very demanding. Actually, they're as demanding as the competition makes it. Without the speed and condition of top players in soccer you'd also not last very long.

But that's the point, each sport is demanding in its own way. Just because you're not hitting other people in soccer doesn't make it any less of a sport. They're both real sports.
