So what do you all get from this?

Personally, I think the people who made the bake sale are spot on. Giving differnent races advantages is not helping racism in the slightest. It reinforces racial differences. In NZ getting into university is hardest as a white male. There are no scholarships for you (But there are for every other race and gender) and some other races get preferential entry. I didnt get into university, but if I were born a Maori (NZ native) I would be in no problem, no questions asked. I would also have a job. Giving advatages helps nothing but continuing racism.

haha. actually pretty funny. I clicked the link half expecting to be offended, but it's actually kind of true. giving people advantages just due to thier race is sort of racist. "Aww... you're black? No way you'd make it into school without my support! Lemme help you."

Well getting into university here in NZ is the hardest if you are a foriegn student based on the fact that their fees seem to be twice as much as non international students. The Maori roll for courses is bs though. The fact that say, for second year medicine they only have around 80 or so places, something like 10 or more are reserved for Maori who unlike everyone else, don't need to get an A or A+ gpa to get in. Same goes with law and other restricted courses. The having a job thing doesn't sound right although I suppose you could count being on the dol and spending it all on chrome hub caps for your mean cefiro baiiiiiiiii....a full time job:P

Well I meant for domestic students. If you're an international student, of course it will cost more. The same thing goes in the states. Since you know NZ, I got 49 credits in my level 3. Needed 42 to get uni entrance. Makes no sense to me.

As for the job, I was applying for the police and if you're a Maori you pretty much get straight in. Like they are actively searching them out.

I'm from NZ too. There are scholarships for Maori, they are a minority. Minorities make up a large amount of the lower socio economic groups, so it's not like they offer Scholarships simply because they are Maori, their real target area is the lower socio ecomic groups. If they were to offer Maori scholarships exclusively, then that would be racist. There are scholarships for other target areas too, which include pakeha.

Then make it a scholarship for a lower socio economic group. A requirement to be Maori for the scholarship is a Maori only scholarship. Ive never seen a scholarship where only pakeha can apply, but Ive seen plenty where only a minority can.

Natives are different from races... it's their land, and the right to the land is inherited. Otherwise, as Morgan Freeman put it "I'm going to stop calling you a white man, and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man".

What if your mixed race? Like, half black half white? Or what if you happen to be a mix of several races due to your grandparents? Like, being one part Native American, one part Asian, one part African American and one part Caucasian. Like, do you have to do math?

There are scholarships for others in lower socio economic groups. Also, you can't simply be a Maori to get into university. You also need decent marks to qualify for the scholarship.

If you actually go to a university you'll notice about 99% of the people there are white. If you were born a Maori, you wouldn't be in uni "no problem". You'd be like most Maori, and NOT in university. That's the point of having the scholarship, to encourage Maori to go to university too.

Also, if you go look at scholarships, there are so many that are specific to a group. It's like a tick box, "Are you female?", "Do your parents earn below X amount?", "Are you in this group?", etc. There are so many scholarships out there, and they are mostly specific. They are there to encourage minorities.

I know there are, but there are also ones dedicated to also being Maori. I wasn't picking on them, I was just using it as an example. With my grades that I had, 49 out of the 42 I needed I would have been in. I did badly that year, and I still dont think that I should have gotten in, but I know people who did worse than I did and still got into university because of they were part of a minority.

I have no problem giving people help if they need it. I don't like it when whether or not they need help is decided by their race/gender though.

I'm sorry that you didn't get in, but there is a fact of the matter out there that minorities like Maori aren't achieving what they could. It's also unfortunate that Maori make up a large part of the lower socio economic group, keep that in mind. Consider that if you were born Maori, there is a high chance that you won't go to university. We need these scholarships out there to encourage minorities to achieve what is possible.

I really don't mind that they do get the help. Really. I just don't want to hear how difficult they have it, cause they don't. It is easier on them than for the rest of us. It is sad though, because I have never met a Maori that was less capable than any other person. Sorry for my previous posts and tone, I was just raging at how these people are being threatened and called racist for their very valid points.

Saying Maori need more help than the rest of NZ is bullcrap, Moari have the same opportunities that I have, they can go to the same school, live anywere in NZ or Australia, get any job they want, live the life they want, It's all about the effort you put in. I dont care if you come from a poor family, you can make life your own and get grades at school, study etc to get into college, and the fact that once your over 20, you dont need sixth form cert (or what ever it is these days), as long as you pass an apptitude test your good to go, I know cause I had no qualifications but made something of myself once I matured over 20, I came from a poor family living on noodles each week.

On topic anyway, I think these guys with the bake sale are spot on. Seems every one that complained about them have no clue what is really meant behide it, there letting there emotions cloud there reasoning.

That is a great analogy to the admissions process. It's amazing how upset people get when confronted with the truth.

The point is to shed light on the whole thing that being a different race in this country instantly entitles you to benifits. That's exactly what this is doing. This is a much more visible, blunt, and easy to understand way of showing exactly what happens in the USA.

I feel that since whites are often denied scholarships and grants based on their race and given to minorities, they should get the lowest price. *trollface*

Now that is a clever bake sale and satire there, sadly this will probably get twisted beyond what the students intended for it to be about by the news media.

[QUOTE="Bucked20"]I wonder how they would be acting if a group of people came and took over the area where they were having this sale.airshocker

So you're against an accurate representation of how the admission system at that college works? Figures.

Where did I say that?

I don't even know what you're trying to say. What sort of group would "take over" the area?

I'm doing quasi-mindreading like you were doing to me and others yesterday. :| Just bringing to light how you really feel deep-down.

I feel that since whites are often denied scholarships and grants based on their race and given to minorities, they should get the lowest price. *trollface*

DroidPhysX

Trollface notwithstanding....

This is going back a bit over 10 years, BUT....

My wife and I were about to start attending the same State University of New York campus. We wanted to see if it was possible for us to attend full time while working (I was able to work night shifts while she would attend at night, and vice versa during the day). So, we made an appointment with the financial aid department.

We both had similar academic backgrounds (same high school with comparable grades). We both had identical financial situations, since we were married. Same household income, obviously. Yet, because she was from South America, the amount of financial aid she was eligable for more than doubled the amount that was available to me.

So, regardless of whether or not people think this type of race-scolarship-financial-aid thing is warranted, the facts are the facts.

If its any Native Americans in that college they should of took over there area as a little reminder of what happened to them.
