So what do you all get from this?

Personally, I think the people who made the bake sale are spot on. Giving differnent races advantages is not helping racism in the slightest. It reinforces racial differences. In NZ getting into university is hardest as a white male. There are no scholarships for you (But there are for every other race and gender) and some other races get preferential entry. I didnt get into university, but if I were born a Maori (NZ native) I would be in no problem, no questions asked. I would also have a job. Giving advatages helps nothing but continuing racism.

haha. actually pretty funny. I clicked the link half expecting to be offended, but it's actually kind of true. giving people advantages just due to thier race is sort of racist. "Aww... you're black? No way you'd make it into school without my support! Lemme help you."

Well getting into university here in NZ is the hardest if you are a foriegn student based on the fact that their fees seem to be twice as much as non international students. The Maori roll for courses is bs though. The fact that say, for second year medicine they only have around 80 or so places, something like 10 or more are reserved for Maori who unlike everyone else, don't need to get an A or A+ gpa to get in. Same goes with law and other restricted courses. The having a job thing doesn't sound right although I suppose you could count being on the dol and spending it all on chrome hub caps for your mean cefiro baiiiiiiiii....a full time job:P

Do White students receive a discount if they buy chocolate cake? :P

Minorities make up a large amount of the lower socio economic groups, so it's not like they offer Scholarships simply because they are Maori, their real target area is the lower socio ecomic groups. If they were to offer Maori scholarships exclusively, then that would be racist. There are scholarships for other target areas too, which include pakeha.

There are scholarships for others in lower socio economic groups. Also, you can't simply be a Maori to get into university. You also need decent marks to qualify for the scholarship.

If you actually go to a university you'll notice about 99% of the people there are white. If you were born a Maori, you wouldn't be in uni "no problem". You'd be like most Maori, and NOT in university. That's the point of having the scholarship, to encourage Maori to go to university too.trugs26

It's like a tick box, "Are you female?", "Do your parents earn below X amount?", "Are you in this group?", etc. There are so many scholarships out there, and they are mostly specific. Saying Maori need more help than the rest of NZ is bullcrap, Moari have the same opportunities that I have, they can go to the same school, live anywere in NZ or Australia, get any job they want, live the life they want, It's all about the effort you put in. I dont care if you come from a poor family, you can make life your own and get grades at school, study etc to get into college, and the fact that once your over 20, you dont need sixth form cert (or what ever it is these days), as long as you pass an apptitude test your good to go, I know cause I had no qualifications but made something of myself once I matured over 20, I came from a poor family living on noodles each week.

On topic anyway, I think these guys with the bake sale are spot on. Seems every one that complained about them have no clue what is really meant behide it, there letting there emotions cloud there reasoning.

The point is to shed light on the whole thing that being a different race in this country instantly entitles you to benifits. That's exactly what this is doing. This is a much more visible, blunt, and easy to understand way of showing exactly what happens in the USA.

This is going back a bit over 10 years, BUT....

My wife and I were about to start attending the same State University of New York campus. We wanted to see if it was possible for us to attend full time while working (I was able to work night shifts while she would attend at night, and vice versa during the day). So, we made an appointment with the financial aid department.

We both had similar academic backgrounds (same high school with comparable grades). We both had identical financial situations, since we were married. Same household income, obviously. Yet, because she was from South America, the amount of financial aid she was eligable for more than doubled the amount that was available to me.

So, regardless of whether or not people think this type of race-scolarship-financial-aid thing is warranted, the facts are the facts.
