'Racist' KFC cricket ad causes uproar in US

A KFC advertisement that shows an Australian cricket supporter giving fried chicken to West Indies fans has caused outrage in the US, where it has been interpreted as racist.
In the ad, part of KFC's "Cricket Survival Guide" series, Mick the Australian is surrounded by dancing West Indies fans, and says: "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?"
He then hands out a bucket of KFC to the crowd — an action which has been seen as supporting a long-standing US stereotype that African Americans eat fried chicken.
In the US bloggers and journalists have claimed the ad is deliberately racist, with the Baltimore Sun even suggesting the ad might be part of a viral prank.
Popular viral media website Buzzfeed posted the video with the subtitle: "What's a white guy to do when he awkwardly finds himself in a crowd full of black folks? KFC has the answer."
Dr Brendon O'Connor, an associate professor at the University of Sydney, said reaction to the ad reflected the "insularity" of the American people.
"They have a tendency to think that their history is more important than that of other countries," he told ninemsn.
But Dr O'Connor, who is currently writing a book about US stereotypes and insularity, also said it was important to realise that when taken out of context the ads could look racist.
"Fried chicken is seen as a traditional southern food ... a staple of an African American diet," he said.
"We don't have many African American people here and we don't have these stereotypes.
"Americans would find the ads racist mostly because they don't realise the context that the West Indies team was here to play cricket."
Dr Peter Gale, a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia, said the ad could affect Australia's reputation internationally — especially in the wake of the Hey Hey It's Saturday blackface scandal
"Even when we're doing advertising we need to be careful about pre-existing historical stereotypes," Dr Gale said.
"We have got a responsibility to be aware of that, and I think that if the media doesn't wise up we're in a lot of trouble."
A spokeswoman for KFC told ninemsn the company will comment on the issue later today.

Very few things irritate me more than Yank media. The amount of things they seem to find offensive is f'ing incredible. What's worse is that they truly believe their cultural and historical values ought to be strictly applied to the rest of the world. Here in Australia we don't find this racist, we have no history being racist to the black community about fried chicken, this stereotype is unknown to the people of Australia, but no American had to stick their noses in and shout racist.

"Fried chicken is seen as a traditional southern food ... a staple of an African American diet,"

I'm pretty sure the West Indians aren't African Americans, isn't this racist assuming all black people are the same?

Americans might think this is racist because black people eating fried chicken is a stereotype that exists in their country. This ad was shown during cricket matches between Australia and the West Indies. If England had been playing at the time, the ad would have shown the bloke feeding chicken to the Barmy Army to make them sit down and shut up. There's no racism intended or perceived in Australia. The complaints I've seen have come from Americans guilty about they treat people in their country

Most Americans have the sense not to find this racist as well. A few people do and the media jumps on it because it makes for inflammatory media which always gets good ratings.

Typical, something that is nothing more than a stereotype/generalization in the US being twisted into something about race, sighs.

The chicken and watermelon stereotypes are non-existant in Australia. And England. And everywhere else besides the USA.

Different things from different cultures and countries tend to be interpreted radically differently. What you might see as not racist or offensive in one country can very well be so in another. It's hardly just America. It's everywhere if you give it half the chance.

Exactly. That's why you have to be extremely careful about how you expose your ad in terms of cultural, region, and nation specific context. It doesn't matter if you think it's your fault or not. People will gang up on you for that. Sometimes it will be relatively minor like this, and sometimes it will not.

Tell me where I'm misinformed?

From Wikipedia

Since the Civil War, traditional slave foods like fried chicken, watermelon, and chitterlings, have suffered a strong association with African American stereotypes and blackface minstrelsy. This was commercialized for the first half of the 20th century by restaurants like Sambo's and Coon Chicken Inn, which selected exaggerated blacks as mascots, implying quality by their association with the stereotype. While acknowledged positively as soul food in the modern age by many, the affinity that African American culture has for fried chicken has been considered a delicate, often pejorative issue; While still present, this perception has been fading for several decades with the ubiquitous nature of fried chicken dishes in the US and a gradual ageing and dull acceptation of this stereotype.

Definelty sounds Like this problem originated from America.

I just can't understand, firstly; why there would be a strong stereotype that african americans enjoy fried chicken. Why is that a stereotype? It's just people enjoying food, there is no possible reason I can see why there needs to be any racial connetations attacthed to that.

secondly; how could people enjoying chicken POSSIBLY turn into something racist? Only in America

It's not exactly a strong stereotype, but I can see why that ad can be a little bit iffy in the wrong context, and enough to generate some controversy when shown to the "right" people. Sometimes it takes time to put two and two together and "get" what the ad is truly trying to convey. In the mean time, you can jump to all sorts of different conclusions, especially in a specific culture. Like I said, it's not "only in America". It's everywhere where anything can be misinterpreted. It's part of life I'm afraid. And one of the perils of marketing.

Did you not read my post before quoting it? NOBODY is offended by this ad. I don't even see this so called "uproar." as a matter a fact, this is the first place I've heard about it. It is not on the news or any news source. I don't see where the "uproar" is. A few bloggers said it so automatically all of the United States thinks it is racist? That makes no sense at all. Come on people, think before you post.

How anyone could find this advertisement racist is beyond me. The reason all the people around the guy are black is because they are of the same nationality, and from a place where dark skin is dominant (The fact that they are all wearing the same sweater makes it even more obvious). Everyone knows that opposing teams' fans don't get along well, regardless of their ethnicity. Because he is the only one there cheering for his own team, he gets a bucket of KFC, which nearly everyone enjoys.

The fact is, it is awkward to be completely surrounded by fans of the opposing team; which is the point of the commercial.

It's not all Americans. Just the ones that love the race card and love to be victims. I'm American and see nothing wrong with it.

Race card is around more than ever these days, and it's sickening. Nobody seems to be a real man anymore, just a cry baby victim.

Well its not surprising because a common joke here in North America is black people like fried chicken and grape drink. And that commercial shows just that, even if its unintentional that is why it pissed off some people.

It is pretty funny, but, being a fried chicken company, they should know the stereotypes surrounding their product and try to avoid them.

It's amazing how easily people get angry over something as stupid as a commercial. The commercial was aiming to show that their chicken is a popular food item, but suddenly you throw black people in the mix and it becomes racist. It just seems so stupid to me why someone would make such a big deal over it.

Well it is a stereotype in the US... So it's perceived as racist by a lot of people. I don't know the deal with everyone saying Americans are basically ignorant fools that would turn this into race when it's something we've been living around forever. If the intent isn't racist, then it's not racist, but don't expect Americans to automatically realize that "It's a cricket match, and it didn't mean that!"dreDREb13

This also means that ads in other countries don't need to come with a disclaimer in case someone in the US finds it offensive. Ignorance on your part if you think the world revolves around the US.

The part that gets me isn't even the chicken, it's the fact that the commercial impliesa white guy in the middleof a black crowd is naturally going to be uncomfortable. To me the fact that he's using fried chicken to win them over is just another later of an idea that was idiotic in the first place.

No it implies that a single supporter of one team would be uncomfortable being surrounded by multiple supporters of the opposition team - I suppose if you are looking for racism you will find it
