Good, rap sucks.Comorat
For all we know, devoted metalheads could have made that stuff up. Still, if the numbers are correct, hopefully it should motivate higher quality rappers to emerge from the woodwork...though since the best in the game are mostly underground, I could just be blathering. Heck, I always blather...
I'm 31 years old, I was around for rap to be "born". Yes, I've managed to listen to a song or two. It's crap. I'd rate country music higher than rap on a social scale and most country music is for inbred hicks that drive pickups and sleep with thier sisters. Rap music has managed to embody every single bad stereotype in the world right now and has managed to take every "evil" rock and roll suppsedly had in the 80's and make it a confirmed reality. Oh there's exceptions to teh rule, but the vast majority of rap is baseless, ghetto BS spouted off by a bunch of wannabe posers that never had a hard day in thier life.Comorat
While I dislike the mainstream played out gangster style Rap you're describing, you must take into account that there are many Rappers/Hip Hop bands that don't talk about that kind of stuff, who also use instruments and are very capable artists. To generalize after you've heard a song or two is precisely the problem with people, judging a book by it's cover; whether it's a genre of music; or a different race of people. You really shouldn't judge something until you know more about it, food for thought, hun.
And your statement about Country music is almost hilariously incorrect.

Well let's just see a list of "good" rap then shall we? Better yet google up your favorite rap song, one that really moves you and speaks to your heart without it endorcing some sort fo negative stereo-type and I'll acknoledge said song as music. Cause' I can damn sure google up a good dozen that do the opposite.Well let's just see a list of "good" rap then shall we? Well, pretty much anything by The Blue Scholars and De La Soul, they tend to write light hearted music.
And my favorite Rap songs happen to be a tad vulgar; to which I say "so what?"
The world is a pretty vulgar place, the songs I'm thinking of in no way endorse bad behavior, in fact the ones I know just acknowledge it and tell you to stay away; or point out the problems in the world in a very brutal way.
Ugh, I can't believe you quoted the word good, stop being so cliche, it's obnoxious. lol

So what you're saying is that I don't know what I'm talking about and stereotyping about rap when in fact you can't even post the words from your personal choice of rap music to listen to because it's too vulgar? I'd say that pretty much proves me right.[QUOTE="dhyce"][QUOTE="Comorat"] I'm 31 years old, I was around for rap to be "born". Yes, I've managed to listen to a song or two. It's crap. Go liston to your Elton John and Michael Bolton if profanity scares you so much. Here we go again, I make a point, invite others to disprove it and I get flames. Typical and not surprising in the least.ComoratMaybe it's because of moronic comments like the whole of Page 3 of this thread.

It's not really too vulgar, ugh, you totally didn't understand what I meant, huh? :/
God, I wish some great Rap fan was on right now, because I'm pretty new to the genre, but it is quite good if you give it a chance. I don't really have a great memory, just look up The Blue Scholars and De La Soul, you'll be hard pressed to find a vulgar track.
Trust me, there's tons of Rap that doesn't fall into the stereotypes, I just happen to enjoy some of the vulgar stuff. I'll look up some Blue Scholars or De La Soul lyrics if you're lazy dear, I mean, if it matters that much.

He could also try some Christian Rap like TobyMac or KJ-52. Or the Beastie Boys, although none of their songs are really that deep... Tupac "Changes" isn't too "vulgar". But it looks hopeless for this guy to contemplate that Rap music could be good. The best rapper of all time (IMO) is Immortal Technique, and he swears like a mutha******. But his raps are probably the smartest in the whole industry. Besides, he's underground and staying that way, and that makes the cake all the more sweeter.[QUOTE="Comorat"] So what you're saying is that I don't know what I'm talking about and stereotyping about rap when in fact you can't even post the words from your personal choice of rap music to listen to because it's too vulgar? Like thoughts out the back of my mind
Going back in some time
Like when you used to cut and had to go to the back of the line
Look back and you find
Tracks that make you relax and recline
Now cats rap about packing a nine
When they lacking divine
Inspiration
Running out of topics of conversation
Well I drop it in the pocket because rocking's my occupation
I do it remarkably, spark up a leaf
And possibly you could follow me
Tap into your chi
Utilize your memory
To help you see clearly, then get back to me
Actually, nothing's new under the sun
So when life be stressing me
My remedy is 'bringing back sweet memories'
Like the faces that are woven in the fabric of my consciousness
>From cities where making 21's a big accomplishment
Like when my people understood their prominence
And my past life visions of the continent
Like the first time I saw KRS live, rockin' it
I heard Resurrection by Common Sense
Dominant in my psyche
I chose my direction like Spike Lee
To speak my life through mics, and I never take it lightly
It might be something you did to bring you down when you were high
But that karma's a b****, you steady asking God why
Like when my parents first split up
Yo, I was illin'
Seems like some years they was together for the sake of the children
And I love them for that
I don't know if they saw that
So I'ma say it, and convey it when the world play it             -Talib

Immortal Technique is my favorite as well! Haha
Plus, Sage Francis, Edan, and Aesop Rock do plenty of unvulgar stuff as well, I'm pretty sure MF Doom does plenty as well, heck, I'm probably missing a whole bunch.
Isn't all music sales pretty low right now?TallicaFan2005Yeah, but as it says in the article Rap saw a bigger decline than other types of music, and it says that there wasn't a rap album in the top 10...I doubt this is the beginning of the end for rap though. I don't like rap, and a lot of it's culture isn't that great...so I don't feel bad reading this.
Here we go again, I make a point, invite others to disprove it and I get flames. Typical and not surprising in the least.ComoratYou made a point? I call that talking out of your ***. Haven't you realized that any other genres have bad influences as well?

I've invited you to defend your position with fact. I don't belive this thread is about ALL music now is it? If I recall correctly it's about the decline in sales for rap music. To which I expressed support because in my opinion rap sucks. An opinion I have yet to see a counter point to other than "OMG YUR WRONG CUZ I SAY SO!!1". So if I'm wrong and there is clean, talented rap out there that doesn't enforce a negative stereotype I invite you to post some as well and prove me wrong.
Im a big fan of hip hop, like the roots, Jurassic 5, dj shadow and dj krush, its good to hear that "Gansta rap" is failing.Mann_ukYeah, I like stuff like DJ Shadow, DJ Krush or The Roots too, it's the gangsta rap that it's pointed out in that article that started this whole discussion.

Keep in mind that broad generalizations are the wave of the future so anything shown on MTV will be considered "all" rap. It helps people to sleep easier.

I submit this as a statement of indisputable fact. Now, prove me wrong. Come on, I'm opening this up for creative debate and all you people want to do is argue. Broaden your minds.

Even if you are half as dumb as I think you are, you should know that whether you've heard it or not there is good rap.
And who's counting here? Other posters have been posting artists and lyrics. I'll even throw in an artist, Common.
