[QUOTE="Solid_Cobra"]As a hip hop fan, I'm glad the sales are down.  That way the only people who are making and listening to hip hop are people who actually care about it as an artform.  I hope the record companies and posers move on and find another genre to bastardize.  Hip hop will return to being an underground movement, as it should be.

Here's some funny Chris Rock standup on the state of Rap music.
illshogun

but how will that help if all the great mc's went back to the underground

i mean i gots mad luv for def jux  and there some other out del aesop rock we cant let them take there shine ya meen

Sadly enough, Cobra, there's a lot of truth in this, and I'm somewhat inclined to agree. For all the defending I've tried to do of the genre, there's enough of it that really brings the negativity on itself. I'm sorry, but it saddens me that people only know rap for its destructive and unintelligent "hits." ("I'm fly cuz I'm hot, you ain't cuz you not" - I mean seriously, what the hell?) Meanwhile constructive, or at least thought-provoking, rap gets ignored. It's like when a certain attorney focuses on Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto when there's Spore and Viva Pinata.

Still higher on the foodchain than trolling eh Sparky? And I'm actually IN compliance with the TOS.

Actually according to the ToU most of your posts here - and elsewhere - are borderline trolling, if not downright offensive... not ROLFCHANK's response above.

You do whatever is the best thing for you to do in this case. Far be it for me to encourage you to not do your duties if you feel so inclined to do so. And I sure as hell don't have any desire to go back and edit everything I say in a vain attempt to appear more PC. I've said my piece, do whatever you feel is apropriete. I'm not here to make friends or coddle, I'm here to express my opinions.

To Fox's article - NO **BLEEP**.

That's what happens when you saturate the market. There's been so much money in rap the past decade that 'artists' (I use the word loosely here) get signed more frequently, they churn out the same sort of drivel that's been selling well, and just go with it. Over and over again.

Eventually even the people who like it start realizing that something's up. "Hey, I'm buying the same garbage over and over again."

I hope a lot of the mainstream rappers go under - that way there should be more focus on the good ones.

[QUOTE="dhyce"]

[QUOTE="Comorat"] I'm 31 years old, I was around for rap to be "born". Yes, I've managed to listen to a song or two. It's crap. I'd rate country music higher than rap on a social scale and most country music is for inbred hicks that drive pickups and sleep with thier sisters. Rap music has managed to embody every single bad stereotype in the world right now and has managed to take every "evil" rock and roll suppsedly had in the 80's and make it a confirmed reality. Oh there's exceptions to teh rule, but the vast majority of rap is baseless, ghetto BS spouted off by a bunch of wannabe posers that never had a hard day in thier life.Comorat

While I dislike the mainstream played out gangster style Rap you're describing, you must take into account that there are many Rappers/Hip Hop bands that don't talk about that kind of stuff, who also use instruments and are very capable artists. To generalize after you've heard a song or two is precisely the problem with people, judging a book by it's cover; whether it's a genre of music; or a different race of people. You really shouldn't judge something until you know more about it, food for thought, hun.

And your statement about Country music is almost hilariously incorrect.

Well let's just see a list of "good" rap then shall we? Better yet google up your favorite rap song, one that really moves you and speaks to your heart without it endorcing some sort fo negative stereo-type and I'll acknoledge said song as music. Cause' I can damn sure google up a good dozen that do the opposite.

Most Kanye West songs. Most A Tribe Called Quest songs. Almost every Talib Kweli song. Most Mos Def songs. A fair few of the early (pre popular G-funk) Tupac songs. Every Dead Prez song (though some could be constrewed as racist, though as a white person myself I don't have a problem with them). Many Eminem songs. Some Akala songs (this guy's UK hip-hop, so maybe you don't know him). A few DMX songs. A few Common songs. Quite a few of the recent Jay-Z songs, and a few of the earlier ones. Almost every Public Enemy song. A few Xzibit songs. Now, these are only the ones that I listen to regularly. You could easily get lots more. Ask me for specific examples, if you want.

Both of Kanye West's albums were released in the last 5 years, for example. Each to his own, of course, but I'd personally say they are great.

one of my main problems with rap (at least mainstream rap) is that I feel like the people "singing" and writing the music are Idiots...they can't spell or pronounce a single word correctly it's "da, dat, dis, boiz, dollaz" crap, I honestly feel like my IQ goes down when listening to that. Now that is not my opinion on all Hip Hop but just about all of the mainstream stuff

It was only a matter of time. I remember reading this news on the Wii news channel. Rap was just a phase that lasted longer than expected. Forms of rock have been around since thhe 50's and its still going strong today. Rap is just a phase and now its finally dying out. Amen.

Rap is a progression of traditional African music, and was brought over to the Americas with slavery. I highly doubt it's going anywhere.

No, rap is a form of expression in music like anything else. Popular rap may be lossing momentum but the artform will always exist. Sorry.

Do you feel the same way about the pronunciation of words in other genres, such as Country (being a notable example) where their strong accents and use of slang could be considered equivalent to the accents and slang in Rap. Much lyrical prowess comes from being able to pronounce words in odd ways, so that they rhyme, and slang is language evolving.

No surprise, most of the good rappers are underground nowadays anyways. The only mainstream I can really stand is nas, Outkast, The Roots, Ghostface, Lupe Fiasco, etc.... And even these artists have alot of underground elements in them.

Rap's been around since the 70's, it ain't goin' anywhere... They said the same thing about rock, that it wouldn't last, and look what happened. Seriously think before you open your mouth. It's actually good for rap that sales are going down, rap was better before it was over commercialized anyway.

Keeping it real and staying true> selling records. Plus, Nas and outkast have no problems selling records, I just like them more than other mainstream rappers becasue they're different, it ain't the same bass boomin beat everytime with someone talking about a gun, it actually has a meaning to it, unlike most mainstream rap which is just dance music for clubs. That's why I like underground, where rappers actually care more about their rhymes and message more than selling out to MTV.

So provide some concrete evidence that my opinions are skewed.  We all know I could google up a half dozen rap lyric sheets that would get me banned for life, I invite you to post ONE that you would consider worth listening to that is socially acceptable by the standards offered in teh TOS of this forum.

Not argue, not flame, debate.

 @ you thinking all rap is about the same thing, seriously, your ignorant as hell.

was rollin' around, in my mind it occurred
What if God was a her?
Would I treat her the same? Would I still be runnin' game on her?
In what type of ways would I want her?
Would I want her for her mind or her heavenly body?
Couldn't be out gettin' bogus with someone so godly
If I was wit' her would I still be wantin' my ex?
The lies, the greed, the weed, the sex
Wouldn't be ashamed to give her part of my check
Wearin' her cross, I mean the heart on my neck
Her I would reflect on the streets of the Chi'
Ride wit' her, 'cause I know for me she'd die
Through good and bad call on her like I'm chirpin' her
Couldn't be jealous 'cause other brothers worship her
Walk this earth for her, glory, I'm grateful
To be in her presence I try to stay faithful

[Chorus]
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] Faithful to the end
[sample] I'd like to be her very best friend

[Verse 2]
He worked with her, she was his lady's best friend
Even if they don't try some ladies test men
And this was a test that was bigger than him
Some believe its the nature that is given to men
He had a good gig, a wife, a kid, a decent home
One reason or another couldn't find peace at home
She asked, "Why do men always have to stray?"
He said, "I'm bad, not as bad as Eric Benet"
"I used to take 'em out to eat but they wasn't really eatin'
Mighta got a little head but I wasn't really cheatin'"
It's hard when your lady don't believe what you say
And what you did in the past you gotta live with today
She asked if they could spend the night together
He thought, and said, "I'm tryin' to get my life together"
Went home to his lady, these were his confessions
"Baby you a blessin' and my best friend"

Now shut your ignorant ass mouth:)

It never quite made the "main stream" as the media would try to make you believe. It was nothing but a marketing driven genre. No real staying power.

Now I ain't tryna be the greatest
I used to hate hip-hop... yup, because the women degraded
But Too $hort made me laugh, like a hypocrite I played it
A hypocrite I stated, though I only recited half
Omittin the word ***** cursin I wouldn't say it
Me and dog couldn't relate, til a ***** I dated
Forgive my favorite word for hers and hers alike
But I learnt it from a song I heard and sorta liked
Yeah, for the icin, glamorized drug dealin was appealin
But the block club kept it from in front of our buildin
Gangsta rap-based filmings became the buildin blocks
For children with leakin ceilings catchin drippins with pots
Coupled with compositions from Pac, Nas's "It Was Written"
In the mix with my realities and feelings
Living conditions, religion, ignorant wisdom and artistic vision
I began to jot, tap the world and listen, it drop

My mom can't feed me, my boyfriend beats me
I have sex for money, the hood don't love me
The cops wanna kill me, this nonsense built me
And I got noooo place to gooo
They bomb my village, they call us killers
Took me off they welfare, can't afford they health care
My teacher won't teach me, my master beats me
And it huuurts meee soooul

I had a ghetto boy bop, a Jay-Z boycott
'Cause he said that he never prayed to God, he prayed to Gotti
I'm thinkin godly, God guard me from the ungodly
But by my 30th watchin of "Streets is Watchin"
I was back to givin props again and that was botherin
By this uncomfortable as a untouchable touchin you
The theme songs that brothas hustle to seem wrong but these songs was comin true
And it was all becoming cool
I found a condom on the ground that Johns would cum into and thought
What constitutes a prostitute is the pursuit of profit then they drop it
The homie in a suit pat her on the butt, then rock it
It seems I was seein the same scene adopted
Prevalent in different things with the witnesses indifferent to stop it
They said don't knock it, mind ya business
His business isn't mine and that **** pimpin got it

They took my daughter, we ain't got no water
I can't get hired, they cross on fire
We all got suspended, I just got sentenced
So I got noooo place to gooo
They threw down my gang sign, I ain't got no hang time
They talk about my sneakers, poisoned our leader
My father ain't seen me, turn off my TV
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

So through the Grim Reaper sickle sharpening
Macintosh marketing
Oil field augering
Brazilian adolescent disarmament
Israeli occupation
Islamic martyrdom, precise
Yeah, laser guided targeting
Oil for food, water, and terrorist organization harborin
Sand camouflage army men
CCF sponsorin, world conquerin, telephone monitorin
Louis Vuitton modelin, pornographic actress honorin
String theory ponderin, bullimic vomitin
Catholic priest fondlin, pre-emptive bombin and Osama and no bombin them
They breakin in my car again, deforestation and overloggin and
Hennessy and Hypnotic swallowin, hydroponic coughin and
All the world's ills, sittin on chrome 24-inch wheels, like that

They say I'm infected, this is why I injected
I had it aborted, we got deported
My laptop got spyware, they say that I can't lie here
But I got noooo place to gooo
I can't stop eatin, my best friend's leavin
My pastor touched me, I love this country
I lost my earpiece, I hope y'all hear me
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

He thought, and said, "I'm tryin' to get my life together"
Went home to his lady, these were his confessions
"Baby you a blessin' and my best friend"

Now shut your ignorant ass mouth:)

By your post I guess we all know who the ignorant one is.

I'm ignorant:lol: Don't make me laugh. I didn't say one ignorant thing like he did, your just mad I proved him wrong.

[QUOTE="ftothereaky"][QUOTE="eXor512"]It was only a matter of time. I remember reading this news on the Wii news channel. Rap was just a phase that lasted longer than expected. Forms of rock have been around since thhe 50's and its still going strong today. Rap is just a phase and now its finally dying out. Amen.Unassigned

Rap is a progression of traditional African music, and was brought over to the Americas with slavery. I highly doubt it's going anywhere.

It never quite made the "main stream" as the media would try to make you believe. It was nothing but a marketing driven genre. No real staying power.

Popular rap was/is mainstream which is why it is so marketable. The businesses and greedy artist raped it for money, but the genre is itself is right there with country/rock/motown etc.. It's just another way to do music, nothing more, nothing less.

How beautiful love can be
On the streets love is hard to see
It's a place I got to be
Loving you is loving me
How beautiful love can be
On the streets love is hard to see
Gotta reach that frequency
Loving you is loving me

[Verse 1]
Yeah, you know what love is
Even found it on the ground where the thugs live
My man had to dig deep to find his
Couldn't sleep 'cause on the real he had five kids
Live nig's, real brothas express and taste it
At crap games, black dames and big faces
Cases in court, fam' showin' love and support
You and your baby's mom thought that love was a sport
As men we were taught to hold it in
That's why we don't know how 'til we're older men
If love is a place I'ma go again
At least now, now I know to go within
At time it can take ya for a spin
Heartbreak hotel then you're home again
I've seen love make a brothas soul pretend
Like a story that he don't want to end
Yo

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
It's all love where we come from
In the hood love we was told to run from
That same hood where the guns sung
We holla love, hopin' it would come one
Crack got so many lives undone
From lack of love many hide some run
I knew this girl with a son who dreamt of actin' in plays
Demonstration with her man had her trapped in a maze
Tryin' to find herself again, much of that she'd have gave
Love can free us, to it some of us react as a slave
Funny, we love 'em more when they're relaxed in a grave
Wonder if a thug is raw, is he actin' afraid?
Everybody loves sun, why do I attract shade?
Heard of the love of money, but compassion it pays
Talk about it with my youth so she'd understand
What it is to be loved by a man
Uh

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Some say that I'm a dreamer 'cause I talk about it often
Seen the hardest brotha soften wit' his homie in a coffin
We walk and stand in, fall in it
With the right companion we all in it
Mary sang a song about it, having broad limits
In the game of life, it's the scrimage
Reminiscing on letters I wrote in my small days
A letter to the people, love always

Damn, rap sure is all about them hoes and rims:roll:

Yall make me laugh:lol:

have you listened to it?, or just the one's you hear on the radio? exactly, you can't say anything if you don't even know about it

actually i've listened extensively to all kinds of rap through my rap-obsessed friends and i still find it to be..."sucky"... i'm sorry...but i just don't see the talent in a dude talking abt the "hard life" and women he has and how big his mansion is.... and plz...don't tell me that rapping takes aloot of work and talent because it just doesn't.... if u listen to a rap song for long enough u can rap it as perfectly as the original rapper...and u can't say that abt rock vocals or instrumentals....

Rap takes no talent? OK. Spit a rhyme, right now, as good as Rakim or nas, do it, it takes no talent, so obviously you can do it since it's so easy:roll: So go ahead, I wanna hear your rhymes if it's so easy.

Your friends have poor taste. Who can you rap like?  VIACOM has ruined the children of this nation. BTW isn't rock just screaming over loud music? :?

So provide some concrete evidence that my opinions are skewed.  We all know I could google up a half dozen rap lyric sheets that would get me banned for life, I invite you to post ONE that you would consider worth listening to that is socially acceptable by the standards offered in teh TOS of this forum.

Not argue, not flame, debate.

familyguy77

As a death metal fan I can totally understand that all the 'good' rap can be found in the underground, just like metal. But I have no problem in totally flaming mainstream 'metal' and seeing it for what it is.

All that bling bling **** serves no purpose but to earn some quick cash. It would strenghten a rap-fans' argument if he would argue about his music knowing at least this. Death metal lyrics aren't especially intelligent, but its so over-the-top that nobody takes it seriously, heck, nobody can understand them anyways :D

But many popular rap artists write 'lyrics' that are sort of realistic and can have a VERY bad influence on today's youth. It's those kind of lyrics and the unintelligent 'beats' that make so many hate raps

PS: Note how I'm not talking about underground rap

I always converse with friends and family about the negative aspects of mainstream hip hop even though I used to be one of it's biggest advocates. Many underground or "non-pop" artist actually critique Pop-culture rap as much as people who aren't hip hop fans. It's refreshing that you can tell the differenct between mainstream and underground rap. :) Many people lack that skill.

I'm 31 years old, I was around for rap to be "born". Oh there's exceptions to teh rule, but the vast majority of rap is baseless, ghetto BS spouted off by a bunch of wannabe posers that never had a hard day in thier life.

yeah, ive havent heard a song by 50 cent, ive heard one by 2pac. he sucks. really

The article is just typical industry panic talk. It's astounding that people still lap this stuff up when the same articles are published year after year. I can't begin to count the number of times when R&B & Rap have dominated the charts causing the typical flurry of articles asking whether or not "rock was dead" and how the youth was abandoning the market. It's amazing how many people can't step outside the box and look at the big picture and just accept that these things go in cycles and there's nothing anyone can do to change that.

No. It is reprisentative of what YOU hear on the radio; the commercial crap. This is what gets the most publicity. Tupac was being attacked, but when you listen to most of his songs, they actually had better messages that songs of any other popular genre. And don't blame only the artists, but blame the consumers who buy the junk that they play on the radio.

you can only hear someone rhyme good with hood and yell YEEEEAH! some many times
