There's a political aspect to abortion that makes it a national issue. Is the abortion of a child murder or acceptable? Up to what point is it acceptable? When does life begin? So on and so forth. Bristol Palin's case has NOTHING to do with abortion besides the fact that she is not going to have an abortion.

Now as for sex ed. I don't know what to say, it's failing, to say the least. Will it be any better if the government just stepped out of it all together and let parents handle it? Who knows.

hokies1313

So it is a private matter only if people do as they do? Otherwise the same people can dictate to others how they should handle a situation?

No, what I am trying to say is that abortion as a whole is a national issue, has been for years. I have no idea what is right or wrong in abortion. Bristol Palin's pregnancy is not a national issue and has nothing to do with politics. The general issue of abortion is a national political hot topic. We don't single out say Mrs. Jones because she wants an abortion, just as Sarah Palin and her family shouldn't be singled out for their private issue.

The debate on Abortion has nothing to do with individual people, but has to do with the practice of abortion as a whole. Please don't confuse me as someone who preaches anti-abortion or whatever, I'm Pro-choice, I feel it isn't my place to tell someone what to do with their body/child. Now does everyone think the way I do? No. And unfortunately a lot of people who are pro-life have the power to make abortion a public matter.

Short and sweet: A single pregnancy is a private matter, the general practice of abortion is a public matter.

I don't buy it. The same people who demand privacy for their issue try to legislate what other people can do. That's anything but treating other people's issues as a private matter.

Is a pregant 17 year old really that big of a deal anymore? 15 or under, maybe...but 17? Nah, no biggie really.

What bothers me is that the daughter could be forced to make a decision (keep the baby) she doesnt want to make for political purposes, as the McCain crowd is prolife iirc.

As for reputation, doesnt matter to me. Its her daughter, she is her own person, and does not influence Palin or McCain.

mrbojangles25

At the same time, if the daughter made an individual decision to have an abortion (which im against), and McCain and Palin drove home the point that they didn't agree with her decisions, it would be the democrats and media who would punish her for it, using it as a political tool to attack McCain.

[QUOTE="Tjeremiah1988"]and that somehow makes the parents unaccountable? Apparently something went wrong with what they were preaching to her. Tjeremiah1988

Kids don't always listen to parents. I think that has been established. LOL

all im saying is kids arent born knowing what they know now. It starts with parenting and not every kids mom is running for VP. Palin strongly goes against what her daughter did and its nothing but a slap to her, her family, and her beliefs. Since shes preaches what she does and her own kid goes out and get pregnant, it doesnt paint a pretty picture for what could be the next VP. People praise her for having 5 kids but it also shows she cant even control one.

Get off your milk crate and try swinging that judgmental pendulum the other way pal.

If your parents were able to control you at 17, then you probably had EXTREMELY controlling parents. At 17, your old enough to make your own decisions.

you fail to understand shes a child that lives in her parents home which strongly goes agaisnt what she did. Thats a problem. Not everyones mom is milk and cookies. In this case, this mom isnt milk and cookie. It isnt bad to have some strict rules or "controlling parents".

You know, that has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard. Seriously, just because your PARENTS believe something doesn't mean that YOU believe something or will do every they say.

Seriously, countless examples that span time prove that children don't always do what they their parents want them too. They also don't always believe what their parents believe.

Bristol Palin's decision to have sex is in NO WAY a reflection on her mother.

Which is the sad thing of politics in the US.. Alot of times its flat out name calling on both sides, with little real debate or rational thought.

I don't like that some people feel the need to to impose rules on other people's lives just like you do. That being said, I'm not going to make a huge deal out of Bristol's pregnancy just because I disagree with Gov. Palin on an issue.

Bristol's pregnacy is private, has nothing to do with politics or political issues. Bristol has never done anything on the political stage, her pregnancy has nothing to do with abortion. So in fact, the two issues are different. Pregnancy =/= Abortion.

hokies1313

I don't think her pregnancy is relevant to anything in terms of the political race. If I were the competition (Obama) I'd say it is a non issue as well.

Even so I do find it ironic that they (the family) demand privacy for a matter that when it is someone else they are happy to impose their beliefs on everyone else. I don't think it is a private matter if a neighbor tells me to keep my nose out of their business, and then doesn't just involve them self, but try to legislate my business...

This is one of these very slippery issues that Democrats need to stay away from,

Last week a Democratic Pundit made the comment that a McCain/Palin ticket was a "shaking 72 year old finger, and a finger painted hockey mom's finger on the button" a comment that saw a lot of backlash,

Now you have Democrats asking "How can someone with a baby with downs syndrome and a pregnant daughter be a good mother and Vice President?"

I think the best rebutt I heard was on CNN this morning when a Clinton supporter was asked to respond to the above, and she said:

"If a Steven Palin was named to the ticket in the same situation would we be asking of he could still be a good father to his kids? and has anyone asked if Obama will be a good father to his children with the requirements of the Presidency?"

The Democrats could face a simply huge backlash if just one of them steps out of line and provides a sound byte for Palin to use.

Oh, God, people whine and complain constantly about how Obama's nutjob pastor is irrelevant to politics but they just go on and on about Palin's irrelevant crap!

Palin isn't the one who had sex before marriage, therefore Palin is not the one who committed the immoral act, therefore, your already-crappy smear is incredibly flawed.

Finaru

She believes in no sex education as well..

Yes, it is a little ironic. But imagine for a second that it isn't just your neighbor, but several neighbors, or several groups of neighbors across your city, and several cities across the state, so on and so forth. Their movement begins to pick up power, and politicians have their own views and in the case Palin is anti-abortion. But she isn't the only one anti-abortion. I mean, if she wasn't anti-abortion, someone else would be, and the issue wouldn't go away. Punishing Palin for her beliefs is wrong. You and I may not agree with what she is trying to do, but we shouldn't sacrifice Bristol's privacy simply because of our disagreements.

I feel so bad for the 17 year old kid being forced to marry some guy who knocked her up Way to ruin the rest of her life parents, and all for your political career. This girl should just go get an abortion, and continue as a normal 17 year old would do, who wasn't being viciously controlled and forced by their parents to do something they dont want to do.

Nah, not unless Obama or someone close to him says it himself. Everyone's all but forotten about McCain's economic advisor's "mental recession" (which I think is a far bigger blunder than anything that can be said about this situation). Some democrat saying something dumb won't cost him much.

You had a Pastor in his Church say things that he clearly did not believe in which cost him some heavy ground in the Primaries, If someone like Dodd or Dean made a gaff it could stick.

Right......and you're absolutely right on this issue because you were there when these issues came up in their household? Don't talk in absolutes. It is possible her parents urged her not to have an abortion--that is always a possibility.

Bristol Palin's decision to have sex is in NO WAY a reflection on her mother.

meh, make of it what you will. I was just answering what he said about how a 17yr is an adult and should run around as if they were disregarding and disrespecting their parents.

Once you get to certain age you do do things that your parents don't like. In the US today, 17 is nearly an adult and makes their own decisions, and some of those decisions do end up disregarding what their parents told them to do.

She said from the article that she WILL be marrying and no abortions will take place...

What does her daughter's personal life have to do with her own morals? It's not like she has complete control over her daughter's choices.

[QUOTE="diped"]I feel so bad for the 17 year old kid being forced to marry some guy who knocked her up Way to ruin the rest of her life parents, and all for your political career. This girl should just go get an abortion, and continue as a normal 17 year old would do, who wasn't being viciously controlled and forced by their parents to do something they dont want to do.hokies1313

She herself choose not to have an abortion and to marry the father, not her parents.

Get a clue.

the father doesnt want a kid and doesnt want to get married.

Why are we talking about this? Can we please move on to something more important, like say, progress on the war or the Presidential candidates' policies, perhaps?

Bristol made the decision to keep the child on her own, she was not pressured into it by her family. If you have evidence to the otherwise, please share it. Until then try to stay away from unfounded allegations.

The "Bad Mother = Bad Person" smear is the oldest in the book. Women have for a long time been thought of only in the context of marriage and motherhood (the word "woman" comes from the word "wife", which means "woman"), and when a woman is thought to fail at marriage (her husband cheats on her or leaves her) or at motherhood (her daughter gets pregnant out of wedlock), she is thought to have failed at being a woman.

How comforting it is to know that this sentiment is alive and well in places from the most fascist dictatorships and third-world hell-holes to first-world America's very own Democratic Party.

Kind of like when Mike Moore said the hurricane in LA showed that God hated the republicans vecause it hit during their convention. Dispicable.

The best thing for Sarah Palin to say would be, "Sorry Senator, but I have a special needs infant and a pregnant teen to worry about. I can't take the second highest position on the country at this time. Please consider the patriot Mitt Romney." litewo

That's sick. Unless it's a legal matter, or matter that effects our country, niether you or anyone else has any right to comment on how she raises her daughter.
