Bill Maher called Pope Benedict XVI a "nazi" and "a leader of a pedophile cult". Now there is an effort to boycott HBO until he is fired. What do you think. Well If Don Imus was fired for his comments about the Rutgers basketball team and Dog the Bounty Hunter's show was cancelled because he used the N word, Maher should definitely be fired because what he said was much worse than what the others said.

First off he's a comedian and the pope is a public person, so it's fair game. Also Pope Benedict was one of "Hiltler's Youth", and leads the church who has a serious problem with pedophilia, Maher is an atheist so he considers all religions cults. If they would kick their priests out and turn them in that's one thing, they tend to just transfer them. This "comedic comment" is in no way like what Imus said, or Dog said.

It's exactly like what they said.:?
"This "comedic comment" is in no way like what Imus said, or Dog said."
What Imus and Dog said really wasn't worth making such a stir over. Imus was just poking fun at a womens sports team and Dog can tell his son to date or not date whomever he wants.
Barrack Obama has said worse things in the last few weeks, but most of them were ignored due to double standards. Obama said "There are flaws in the black community....", "he looks at blacks through stereotypes", "small town folks are bitter people that cling to guns, religion, and anti immigrant feelings (that they are racist rednecks)". He wouldn't disavow Reverend Wright, but was for Don Imus being fired (for basically nothing but a crude joke).
wow, whats happened to the ideal of freedom of speech, it seems like whenever somebody says something that people dont agree with that person should be boycotted or fired.Big_player
I don't agree with his comments, I find him to be absolutely tasteless and not very funny but yes he does have the 1st ammendment right and that right is so important. However, he did commit libel against the pope when he called him a Nazi, it was an untrue statement against his person. Either way, Maher's just another member of the sheeple in this country who blindly follow party politics and what they hear in the media rather then use judgement, logic and common sense.
man i hate this imus shouldnt have been fired and neither should bill maher people these days are to senstive geeze. a person cant even have an opinion these days without being fired.Blackfriend8
I agree. It's become tiresome to know that opinion is so filtered. You can't trust what people are saying or that they are even being themselves. Imus was done wrong big time. So, was Kramer, Dog, and Bill Mahr. And, nobody on the media will defend them because they are all chickens.

I think the law reads you cannot commit libel against a public person, hence the political cartoons. And you have no idea who or what Maher stands for if you think he follows party politics. He's equal opportunity on both dems and reps, of late killing the democratic controlled congress. But he commands enough respect to have a senator or house member on his show nearly every week.

You're correct, against any public figure under the first ammendment it must be proven that the person making the remark did so with "actual malice", something Maher clearly did. So it's interesting, the same 1st ammendment we're all commending for allowing Maher to say such things can actually be used against him.
Also, if you honestly believe Maher doesn't overwhelmingly favor democrats, you're clearly not watching the same show as I. True, he has congressmen and senators on his show but the people he brings on are usually all very biased against the Bush Administration and conservatives in general. IMO Maher is just another bandwagon loser, someone who jumps in with the crowd and then tries to act "edgy" and "hard" to show he's anti-establishment. He's 50 year old emo.
Finally, he picks on the pope and the catholic church because they're such an easy target. You think he honestly would've said things like that against Jews or Muslims? No way. Maher's a complete coward and his comedy isn't even edgy. Bill Hicks would've kicked his ***.:D
[QUOTE="Norg"]Well the pope is German and was born in germany so ......... add 2 and 2 together and u get 4 ....... ???? MarineJcksn
That's the way people like Maher think, apparently. YES, the pope was a member of the Hitler Youth. He was forced to join at age 14 (LIKE ALL 14 YEAR OLD BOYS IN GERMANY) but he refused to attend meetings and his father was a bitter enemy of nazism. But bill maher somehow thinks the pope was shouting heil hitler or something:?
Some how I doubt that because the Nazi's killed every one that disagreed with them politically.

I think he's more of a libertarian than anything, but you do have a valid point on Jews & Muslims. When he jokes about either it's not near as pointed as the joke on the pope was, some of that I'm sure has to do with him being raised Catholic, the other, you may be right, cowardly. I just don't think so after listening to him for all these years.

This is why we have this amazing function when it comes to tv.. CHANGE the channel.. Bill can say the most nausiating things if he chooses, grow up and understand this..
Bill Maher is more of a independent Democrat he is indeed on the democratic spectrum of things.. But he has ripped on democrats and supported some republicans.. What he despises is the popular republican group at this time with in the party, that being the evangelicals, and neo cons headed by people like Bush.. He has said some pretty glowing things about McCain.. The fact of the matter as well is Republican's have been office for a long time, its kind of hard NOT to talk about them when they lead the country in Elective and not to long ago congress.. He even rips on the Liberal congress..
Your a fool to think that.. He has ripped on both Muslim and Jewish Culture.. The fact he rips on Christian culture is its the DOMINATING religion in the US.. And he kinda had a point with the Pope supporting pedo's inside the institution.. They were never pressed charges, and they were just "moved around".. This is disconcerting because no one seems bothered with it..
Not to mention if people would realize about your passed posts, they would realize your insanely bias and in the far right spectrum of things.. I have yet to see really any posts of yours that is at best a moderate spectrum post.
Hmm, its odd that when Dog the bounty hunter and Don Imus insult black people they get in trouble, but then when an Idiot like Bill maher criticizes the pope, all of a sudden its ok. kool-aids

What that he called the Pope a Nazi? Which he was a Hitler Youth... Or that he ran a Pedo organization.. Which is also true, those pedo priests weren't expelled or had charges pressed upon them, they were moved around.. Though the Nazi one is questionable at best..

You're right about republicans being in the presidential office a long time but the democrats have run congress the majority of the last 30 years. I've watched his show a lot, at first I thought it was kinda funny because like you said, he seems to rip on everybody. But lately (and maybe because it's an election year) he just seems to slam anyone who doesn't agree with him which is that everyone but Obama is an idiot and gw is the devil. A better example of someone who really tears into everyone equally is Carlin, who's lightyears ahead of Maher in every way. And I highly doubt Maher would say anything about a muslim holy leader supporting pedo's.:?

I WORSHIP Bill Maher... Fire him? I'LL FIRE YOU FROM LIFE!
Freespeech much? I guess you've never watched his show... He mocks whoever he wants and says whatever he wants. If he didn't it just wouldn't be the same. Only uptight Nazi's give a damn what he says. If you are SERIOUSLY suggesting he be fired then you should go live somewhere like North Korea or China, because thats where you belong.
As for saying he isn't funny, I'm going to assume you have the humour of pile of bricks, or mabye his jokes fly a little high over your head.
To be completely honest, people have a problem with him because he is an athiest. He hates religion. He DOESNT respect your God, and hes completely proud of it. He wipes his ASS with your holy books. And doing that in America apparently makes you an un-American traitor, because aparently the constitution has been down some dirty rat hole by religious fundamentalists.
Fire him? Give him a freaking medal more like it, make goddam statues; he may be biased and occasionally full of it but more often than not he tells it how it really is.
free speech dude. he can say what he wants
but on a separate note....technically, he was a nazi (though only technically)

I love the hypocrisy. We can't say he should be fired but he can say whatever. I lol'd
sSubzero, you and I both know he wouldn't have the ****s to say anything against muhammed, hands down. People like Maher act so controversial but back off of certain topics that aren't "safe". IMO Doug Stanhope is much more edgy then Maher and would put his money where his mouth is. MarineJcksn
LMAO then you haven't watched his shows.
Look up TULLYCAST on youtube, its got most of his shows archived. HBO isn't nazi about his show being uploaded so you can watch it legally.
He has ripped on Islam. The reason why he doesn't rip on it as frequently is because America just happens to not be run by Muslims. It happens to be run by Christians. And his show is about AMERICAN politics primarily.
Edgy? Maher isn't an activist. Hes a comedian. He isn't obliged to satisfy the whims of every critic who demands he go out and 'put his money where his mouth is'. His show isn't MEANT to be edgy. His show is fairly laid back if you understand it...
And face it, freedom of speech is a lie in America. You can't get away with some rips on religion. It has too many special unspoken protections...
I can't believe how many people here have such a fundamental misunderstanding of the first amendment. Well, here's an exercise for you.
1) Walk up to your boss.
2) tell him to kiss your fat hairy butt, and tell him that you'd like to do very dirty things to his wife and daughter.
3) Say to him, "you can't fire me! I can say whatever I want."
Yes, you can say whatever you want. You can also say it while you're standing in the unemployment line.

Let him keep his job, IMO he can say whatever he wants about this guy.
He was a member of the nazi youth, and the Chatholic church does have pediphile problems, so what's the problem?
Honesly I think the world would be a better place if people were a bit less Politically correct and stopped being so whiny and sensitive.

No, he's paid to make money for his employers. It's that simple.
Will he get fired? Probably not. After all, HBO is the network that picked him up after ABC fired him for his comments. So they probably won't fire him for these comments.
But this is ANYTHING BUT a first amendment issue. I guarantee you that HBO only picked up his show after ABC dropped it for one reason: they stood to profit from it. If his show ever ceases to be profitable for ANY reason (including viewers deciding to stop watching the show), then it's gonna get canned. Doesn't matter what kinds of comments he was hired to make, HBO is a for-profit business. And like any business, they have the right to fire someone who is causing them to lose money.

well here is a mention of his youth during the Nazi era, so let the true story be told:His youthful years were not easy. His faith and the education received at home prepared him for the harsh experience of those years during which the Nazi regime pursued a hostile attitude towards the Catholic Church. The young Joseph saw how some Nazis beat the Parish Priest before the celebration of Mass.
It was precisely during that complex situation that he discovered the beauty and truth of faith in Christ; fundamental for this was his family's attitude, who always gave a clear witness of goodness and hope, rooted in a convinced attachment to the Church.
During the last months of the war he was enrolled in an auxiliary anti-aircraft corps.
[QUOTE="sonicare"][QUOTE="dave123321"][QUOTE="sonicare"]Apparently most of GS does not understand what freedom of speech is.blasto65_basic
Maybe.
Freedom speech does not mean freedom from criticism. You are free to voice your opinions, but you are not free from the fallout that may cause. You start preaching hate or intolerance, don't be surprised if people ask for your resignation. Freedom of speech just means that you don't get tossed in jail for speaking out. Others are just as capable of excercising their freedoms and call for your resignation.
The catholic church is the biggest bunch of hate spreading and intolerance spreading group there is so people in glass houses should not through stones.
i think some other religion is more intolerant than Catholicism, because the Catholic Church doesn't hijack planes and crash them into buildings, or tell people to strap bombs to themselves and blow people up.[QUOTE="kool-aids"][QUOTE="sSubZerOo"][QUOTE="kool-aids"]Hmm, its odd that when Dog the bounty hunter and Don Imus insult black people they get in trouble, but then when an Idiot like Bill maher criticizes the pope, all of a sudden its ok. sSubZerOo

Actually the whole Pedophile thing happened mostly in the 60's and 70's and a little in the 80's, way before Benedict was the Pope. And the Vatican didn't know about it until the stories came out in 2002, and John Paul II was too old and feeble to do anything about it, besides he had a lot of stuff to attend to. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was assigned to lead the Vatican investigation, so he spent years reading all the files. In his trip to the U.S. Pope Benedict is starting to take action against the Pedophiles banning Pedophiles and men with "deep seated homosexual tendencies" from being priests. Actually i heard a report that said the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has the strictest child protection policies, child abuse is actually more common in our public schools than it is in the Catholic Church. Besides part of the Church crisis is caused by secular society which tells people to fulfill their sexual desires, so when priests fulfill their sexual desires by molesting children they are obeying secular society and disobeying church teaching. Please Log In to post.
