Well if someone has a disability they can get money each month, so should I try to get money that way or get a job??
Anxiety is a disability and I've had bad anxiety ever since I was a kid, so could I get disability money??

Don't say I should get therapy cause I've already had therapy a few times and it never helped.

If you choose to just get disability and never face your anxiety, there is a possibility you could experience negative reinforcement which suggest your anxiety may actually increase. I'd advocate you try therapy again or talk to your doctor about an anxiety medication. Lexapro is a good one, it decreases anxiety without making you feel like a zombie.

Why don't you try working, and if that fails because of your disability, then get disability money.

Work can be really a really fulfilling and rewarding experience, plus you'll probably make more money and get experience.

Anxiety should not be enough to get you disability money. Everyone has anxiety, sometimes paralyzing anxiety. Get a job and get treatment for your anxiety.

Well, I would imagine you are going to have to go through some evaluation to qualify for disability, which I would imagine will lead to more therapy, etc.. You should face the problem while you are young because its only going to get worse and harder to correct when you are older.

Get a job that it's not very long, or else your anxiety will increase about 45%. (Expectation)

I have tried working a few times in the past couple of years, and the longest I could keep a job was 5 days.

I could try again, but it's hard to keep a job.

Can't a mental disability just be as bad as a physical one??

It's not just anxiety I have, I have some other mental disabilities but I think it's just as bad as a physical disability.

Well I hope its something really serious then. Plus, especially with mental issues like that working should be GOOD for you. It may be hard, but with those kinds of issues the worst thing you could do is sit at home and do nothing. If you really get disability I at least suggest volunteering or something,so you do not want to eventually turn into a "crazy cat lady" type.

I'll just add a few more tidbits...going to therapy takes more than a few times...it takes awhile to be affective in complicated cases. Going the easy route is, well, easy, but the more difficult route often provides greater rewards. Now if I could only take my own advice I would quit smoking and drinking. You are not alone, we all have our own cross to bear. When you are ready you will make the move....but dont wait too long.

@Matty: I don't understand how having a mental disability would be good for me. I am kind of offended by you saying I could turn into a crazy cat lady type. Thats why I don't really tell people how bad my mental disabilities are because they might call me crazy.
It is hard for me to get a job, and I have a hard time getting along with anyone in real. It's not fun to have a disability, I want to try and work but when I've worked for a long time before my problems just got a lot worse.

@Quad: Yeah but I have had lots of therapy already in my life. I could try again to get therapy but I'm not sure if it would work. I might try to get a job again, I don't know.
The only way I will get disability is if I really can't get better, and I sort of fear that I can't get better. It's hard to get better when your stuck inside a house all the time and never wanting to go outside because of the anxiety.
I'm not crazy though so you know.

What type of disability are you looking at?

I'm on disability for a life-threatening disease, and just started getting checks a few months ago actually. You need to ask yourself: does your anxiety impede your ability to work? Everyone has anxiety, and unless it's so bad you're having panic attacks constantly and literally can't function, I'd say it's almost guaranteed that you won't get approved. ESPECIALLY in these times....even those really sick are getting scrutinized closely and constantly reviewed every so often. They are being very strict and those who really need it are being denied. I constantly have to keep in touch with them and let them know what's going on.

When you first apply they give you a physical as well as a mental evaluation, and it takes quite a while to get any results (mine took 13 months.) If you DO get approved, you get back-pay for all the months you've waited, which is a huge bonus. I received a $12,000 check after approval, now I get $1000 a month. I'm going through treatment for a disease that won't allow me to work, but when I am able it will drop down accordingly depending on my income and hours. It's nice no doubt, but I tell you......I'd much rather be healthy, work and get no disability than be sick, not work, and get it. I'd take it in a heartbeat, you'd better believe it.

You need to be legitimately ill, or I highly, highly doubt you'll even be considered.

Either way the important thing to do is try and get some support, and try to make small regular trips out of the house (do a little more each few times until you feel comfortable) but dont stay inside for days. I actually know what you are going through and how you feel about receiving help, its not nice feeling bad about yourself as a person and it makes it even worse when somebody reaffirms your doubts and fears.

anxiety is a fairly vague description. Do you suffer actual anxiety attacks where you feel feint, get tunnel vision etc?

or is it like, the boss told me I could work faster, I don't think I can go to work again in case he thinks I'm not working fast enough again....

why not get a job working from home.

But fighting it will lead to a better life. hiding away will make it worse and your life will get worse. that's what the crazy cat lady comment meant.

I usually feel worthless when I'm unemployed. There's a sense of satisfaction you receive from getting a paycheck every 2 weeks or month. I know it might be hard to keep a job, but maybe if you can just stick it out for a couple paychecks you'll start to feel good about yourself. Believe me, I have anxiety as well (I don't think enough to be classified as serious, but it still affects me), so anything that boosts my confidence is wonderful. And that includes working and really accomplishing something. Just try and find a job that's not too stressful and maybe that will help as well.

I'd recommend trying this, there's less responsibility (or at least less presumed responsibility) if you're only working for something/someone on a volunteer basis, rather then if you're actually getting paid for the work. You should be able to quit at any time. Then you can make the step up to full paid work when you feel ready.

Well I've had anxiety since I was a kid and I'm usually paranoid about lots of stuff, and I also got real bad OCD and some other stuff...

If I leave the house sometimes I feel alright, so I don't think my anxiety can get much worse, it's already pretty bad. When I had a job before the anxiety and everything didn't really go away, it actually seemed to get worse which is weird..

None, I don't really want to take meds.

I used to take medication for headaches and I hated it, the meds always made me tired and I felt like crap.
I really also don't want to be taking medication my whole life.

That will only get you so far and really benefit no one. You can't just fill out some forms, say 'I have anxiety' and expect to never have to work and just get checks in the mail.

@Spazz: So if someone has really bad anxiety and they have trouble getting and keeping a job they can't get money from disability??
I guess the only option is then when my parents die I will have to go homeless.

Ah the OT threads, full of little gems like this guy who wants us to pay for his life with our tax dollars. Luckily my job is a piece of cake. I was actually thinking of getting another job that i could do while i'm at this job lol. The only downside of that though is that I wouldn't be able to make fun of people like you on the forums.

Seriously though, get a job. I think society these days allows too many excuses for incompetence; "I have ADHD because I don't like putting in effort to study, give me an easy time in school so that when I finish I can go on disability and mooch off people who actually make an effort.", "I'm depressed boo hoo nobody likes me, give me attention, give me money because nobody likes me enough to hire me.", or in your case, "I'm a whiney loser who is too afraid to step outside the comfort of my parent's house, give me money."

I realize there are undoubtedly extreme cases where people should be entitled to disability but people just abuse the system and find any excuse for their incompetence.

Sorry for being so rude about it but you honestly need a reality check. If you go on disability you are basically giving up on life and deciding to just do nothing with it.

I think you need to have a "serious" disability to get the money, as well. Anxiety is a pretty common thing.

Face your fears. Find a part-time job, and tell your boss that you have severe anxiety. If you need it, take a five minute breather and continue. We all have our hurdles to overcome.

Essentially, yeah. I had/have crippling panic attacks from time to time, I have been on medication and been to therapy and stuff...I'm pretty much over it. Never for a second did it cross my mind to just give up and try to go on disability because that doesn't solve anything.

GET A JOB. You need to get some self-confidence to help you to be able to be independent. Taking the easy way out now will only lead you to misery and more anxiety.

Alright I'll just try to find a job instead of going on disability then.

It's probably not good to let my mental illness go untreated and be outside among people but I have to make money.

Let me explain something. I have a genetic mutation that causes my blood to clot for no reason. They found out when it almost killed me. If I do not take my meds it will kill me. The medication is warfarin, which is an anticoagulant. The amounts I have to take effectively turn me into a hemopheliac. I am not even supposed to shave myself or clip my own nails. If I bump myself and get a bruise I am supposed to immediatly go to the hospital in case of internal bleeding, and a whole host of other things. I cannot even eat green vegtables(my favorite) because it has a vitamin that thickens the blood. And I cannot get disability. So no, I am not overly concerned about anxiety. especially considering by your own admission you will not further therapy or medical treatment for it. This is not flaming, its fact.

Alright I understand.

Dude I just don't want therapy again, it doesn't help anyways.
My parents will probably live longer then me so I'll just live with them forever, then I don't have to worry about making money.

It's probably not good to let my mental illness go untreated

So get treatment...

I already did and it didn't help.

Just close this thread man, I have now asked this question somewhere else and am getting help.

This is not flaming, its fact.mattykovax

Might I ask, who is your daddy and what does he do?

Are you insinuating that you didn't get qualified help from the OT? :x
