I don't know how many people know about this, but on Christmas Eve the Rockland Journal News posted an article and an online interactive map that lists the names/addresses(mine included) of every pistol license holder in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.

Should this information be public record and thus able to be printed in a newspaper?

My name/address is on that list, even though I'm a cop and that information is supposed to be controlled. Anybody with an internet connection can now see my name and address, if they cared to look for it. How is this a smart thing to do? This enables any burglar to see which house has a pistol permit and either target those houses to sell the guns on the black market, or to target houses that don't have pistol licenses. I think this is outrageously irresponsible.

I saw that. Imo it's crossing a line, but the newspaper really did nothing wrong in terms of breaking the law, since unless I'm mistaken, the information is already in the public domain. They simply compiled it together. These kind of databases in general are a nuisance to society and should be eliminated. Same thing with the sex offfender registry and the NRA's idiotic idea of databasing people with mental illnesses.

Not to mention they know which houses don't have guns. Although I kind of feel like the whole stealing of firearms thing is a bit over blown. You're a cop so you might know, but aren't only around 10% of gun related crimes committed with stolen guns?

I'm not sure what the national statistics are, somebody from the FBI or ATF might be able to answer that better for you, but I know in 2011 we only had three gun-related crimes committed in the county of Rockland by pistol permit holders. All other gun-related crime was done with illegal firearms. We have around 20,000 pistol license holders in this county.

Wasn't a very smart thing to do on the newspapers behalf. It's really not helping anyone. Like I said though, these kind of registries only serve to rile up the masses and get them angry with people who they know nothing about other than they appear on said registry. Sometimes it even leads to vandalism of the person's home and propety in the case of those on the list of sex offenders.

Gun registry of any kind, including carry permits, should be nonexistent. It's a right, not a privilege.

They're sickos and losers for doing what they did. But if it's public info, sure, it's the paper's right. But that doesn't make it right. ;)

According to the ATF it's 10%; they don't "Steal guns" they(criminals) purchase them via blackmarket guns that aren't registered. You don't need a permit to purchase a gun in most southern states.

Well, owning a gun is a privilege pretty much by definition since you do need a permit and are expected to follow certain protocol. That doesn't mean what the paper did was right however.

This was a really bonehead move by that newspaper. I saw it on the news down here in the Atlanta area and they showed the map that was published (not smart there either mind you). If I were the police, I would be protesting that paper's main office showing how stupid they were.

I hope nothing happens to you or your family there airshocker. Good luck.

Ah yeah, that's what I had read. They get them through illegitimate means, but most are not stolen from registered gun owners.

You don't need a permit to purchase one, and technically you don't need a permit to carry one(Police can't simply card you because you're practicing your open carry law in open carry states).

For example, here in Florida you don't need a permit for anything besides a pistol. And you don't have to inform anyone(law enforcement) you have a pistol so it doesn't require a permit 'technically' yay loop holes.

Someone take up devil's advocate already. This thread will be much less exciting if we all finally agree for once. I'd do it myself but my imagination isn't strong enough to creatively construe this into a great idea.

One of the points of a concealed weapons permit is so people DON'T know you have a gun. Kind of defeats the purpose if any of those people have one.

Screw them. It's time to post the addresses of the Newspaper management. Complete with interactive maps showing the value of their house. Let's see how long it takes them to cry that their privacy has been violated. It's only fair.
