[QUOTE="xaos"]Let me put this another way; what is it that makes a Christian (one who actually lives up to the teachings of Christ) behave in a compassionate way? Fear of punishment/hope of reward, or a fundamental change in their hearts that makes them feel compassion for others and desire to help and support them.Hewkii
the carrot and the stick.

Quite actually, you've stated all three valid reasons Hewkii, not wanting to get punished because that would mean you have done

something that would make you get punished in the first place (sin), hope for a reward in heaven that is said in the Bible, and

a fundamental change in other peoples' hearts.

All valid reasons,

The reason pack animals don't go murdering each other is that a weak pack results in poor chances for the single pack-member's survival. Since humans lived in packs, they had the same instincts for the pack's survival, since their lives depended on the well-being of the pack.Zagrius

Exactly.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="-Karayan-"] Well, there are obviously laws.... When you take away religion, and you take human psychology and the variety of people in to account and you follow the laws (bar the ban on homosexuality and lolicon) , it is not that hard to be good.Loonie
Laws exist because the majority of people believe in a certain morality. If there is no accepted morality the laws will no longer exist. Now you have each individual deciding.

The majority of people hold a certain morality because we are social animals who care about the well being of others. For example when is the last time you watched the news and heard about something terrible, like a rape, and not felt sorry for the victim and angry towards the perpetrator? Do you feel that way because god says you should be angry or is it because you instinctivly know its a disgusting crime to commit? If its because thats the way god wants you to think then i think you need to re-evaluate your morals.

See, when you give an example such as a rape, you need to ensure that the example is solid and can be true in all aspects that

it is used in. For example, when armies the size of 500 000 thousand Turks invaded my country with an army of 100 000 and we beat them in the mountains

and then they later came with an army of 1 000 000 Turks under Mohammed their leader, pillaged our country, and raped our women,

your going to tell me that the soldiers amongst them selves also felt angry towards the perpetrator... I think not.

Since I bet you cannot think of more than two good reasons, I'll ask you to say just once since you used reason with a plural "s".

Since I bet you cannot think of more than two good reasons, I'll ask you to say just once since you used reason with a plural "s".

1. It uses fear to make people be "good". As in, commiting sins makes you burn in hell for eternity.

2. It also promises good thing for those who do good. Well, if youre really doing it for a reward and not because you want to, then you arent that good of a person...

Well, they are almost certainly not valid, for reasons of my own convictions, however most simply, you must consider the following: God created us and we are naturally with an overwhelming inclination to aid our fellow human being and are naturally punished by feelings of guilt and remorse for going against our instinct. So it seems highly superfluous of God to have created a universe in which additional incentive is offered, and odder still that he should enforce morality with something as weak as the Catholic Church (or the Roman empire, whichever you believe spread Christianity the most).

.....aren't you the linguist.....Hell is simply fear. I don't understand how fear is a noble emotion at all, and if God is omniscient, the means absolutely ruin the ends. We naturally do the right thing. I do not go around killing people for a few reasons, however the primary one is that I absolutely do not want to. I do not want to hurt anyone and I know that I get satisfaction from helping other people. this is a sense of morality, as I see it, and that is far, far nobler than fear. That is more than "once" reason.

I am an atheist and I don't do things people would consider immoral or illegal because of my respect for the only body I will ever have.  I don't drink because I know the harmful effects it can have on your body.  I am aware that in moderation it's not harmful, but with a history of alcoholism in my family I am afraid I couldn't control myself.  I don't rob, murder, rape, or do anything "bad" to people because if I did the obviously wouldn't like it and I would probably end up hurt somehow in the end, so out of respect for myself I choose not to do those things. There is no religion guiding me through my life. I base it all on whether I would like it if someone did something to me, and if I wouldn't than I don't do it.

Because we have a conscience and because there ARE repercussions.  Even in animal societies, there is a hirearchy, and there has to be a leader and control.

It is foolish for one to be ethical only because of fear of the afterlife.

Well, whether there is a god or not, we all create morals and boundaries to make order. People try to act morally and responsibly to benefit the overall being of society. See, it's like if everyone puts in a little work for a greater society, it comes back and benefits you. You can leave peacefully and in order, and not in chaos. Or something like that, I don't really know.

I read this really freaky article the other day. it said how some day we might all reach the same level of consciousness called a singularity, and to make a long story short we eventually lose our physical forms. After about a millisecond that we have archived this oneness, we will collectively realize that we have no reason to exist. So we will remove ourselves from this universe. In effect will will all kill ourselves. But we won't just do it with a rope, we will actually do something that is really outrageous. We will become gods of our own universes.

We will create our own universes, to distract ourselves from existing, (kind of like watching tv, playing a video game, any kind of hobby but to the billionth power) in effect we will eventually, one day become gods of our own unique universes. It is really mind blowing stuff. Reputed cosmologist Carl Sagan actually put his support behind this concept.
