Freebird, Stairway etc. imo

deathtarget04

quite original, and jimi hendrix is the best guitar player ever?

So what if its cliche. They must be good if its considered cliche.....

I'm a lefty, and yes i think jimi hendrix is a very good guitarist (he plays an upside down right handed guitar) but there are alot of good guitarists so i dont think 1 person can be the "best ever"

The Jonas Brothers must be hella good then, if they are cliche. Anyways if you ever actually really get into the guitar you'll understand that Jimi Hendrix isn't really special and nowhere near the best under today's terms.

MoP has the one of the most boring solos ever. >_>

Here are some better solos:

Megadeth-Tornado of Souls (3:08 )

Metallica-Fade to Black (5:06)

Iron Maiden-Caught Somewhere In Time (3:32)

Alice In Chains-Angry Chair (2:28 )

Black Sabbath-Heaven and Hell (4:25)

Dude, Master of Puppets is one of Kirk Hammett's weakest solos. And I don't mean the slow interlude, that part's okay, but the fast solo in that song exemplifies everything that people hate about his playing. It has no feeling, it's not creative and it's not very memorable.

Kirk's played some good solos; Blackened, Ride the lightning, The Unforgiven (Screw off black album haters, the solo in it was one of his best) to name a few, but Master of Puppets is definitely not one of them.

nimatoad2000

cough cough, ride the lightning and its solo are dave mustaine's , dont give kirk " wah wah pedal " hampster credit for that song.

Seems like you don't like Metallica very much.

This is a hard one. I love Master of Puppets but there's One, Fade To Black, Hit The Lights from Metallia just to name a few. Sairway To Heaven, Eruption, Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), Sweet Child O' Mine and a lot more.

Jonas brothers are a fad. much like aqua, NSYNC etc, they'll probably be forgotten in 10 years or so.

Yea? Well im sure that you havent read up on jimi if you think he isnt special.

Look at some of these comments:

I respect your opinion but you cant deny he influenced many guitarists.

No doubt Jimi was one of the most influential guys at the time. I think people are just speaking about technical playing like Yngwie Malmsteen which is alright, but I would much rather listen to the soul that people like Jimi and Carlos Santana put into their music than random arpeggios

It's not just technically but emotionally I also get more feeling from many of today's virtuosos than I do with Jimi Hendrix. I even enjoy Carlos Santana more than some of Hedrix's stuff.

Edit: BTW I don't really enjoy Malsmteen

Meh my opinion will diregarded anyway.... but whatever.

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9GKFZ-Slqk - Go to 4:06. It lasts almost 2 minutes.

I dont even know if that's close to what music the band you mentioned plays but its just a very big solo that I like.

AirGuitarist87

I knew you'd post The Scorpions. That solo was awesome!

I am predictable there, I know. :P

But anyway it seems only you clicked the link. :(

Nobody cares for my taste or ze Scorpions!

Eh, he didnt just play guitar, he wrote music aswell and sang.

"We"?? is this old rock vs metal or something? How can you tell ifa person is better than someone on guitar? Its not like Jimi couldnt play todays metal riffs and solos.

I'd like to see Kirk hammet or any other metal guitarist play like this lol

And I wouldn't really call Kirk Hammet a virtuoso.

That's understandable, I've seen Vai play and the emotion he puts out just through his fingers is amazing. Also he makes very funny faces

Yes Steve Vai has got to be one of my favorites, him and John Petrucci, Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert. And don't make fun of Vai's faces >_>

Compare Hendrix to the likes of Jeff Loomis ,Dave Mustaine, Muhammed Suicmez, etc... he just isn't all that good comparatively..

The ability to play guitar with your teeth is just a gimmick...it dosen't make you any better of a guitarist..

Never heard of paul gilbert.

Anyways im tired of this discussion. Theres no way that we can prove that who is better than who. Its all about preference. Whether you like or not Jimi is one of the best.

Just a quick question what are today's standards? being able to play real fast of a few chords? I can learn that soon so would that make me the best of all time?

That list is one of the most ridiculous ones I've seen, it's should be called "The most successful Guitar Players". It doesn't even include many Jazz or Classical Guitar players.

This right here was one of the greatest moments of guitar in modern history. De Lucia, DiMeola, and McLaughlin. I don't think anything can comapare guitar wise to the Friday Night In San Francisco cd.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ypeZ6R-t0

This right here was one of the greatest moments of guitar in modern history. De Lucia, DiMeola, and McLaughlin. I don't think anything can comapare guitar wise to the Friday Night In San Francisco cd.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ypeZ6R-t0

Eh, he didnt just play guitar, he wrote music aswell and sang.

"We"?? is this old rock vs metal or something? How can you tell ifa person is better than someone on guitar? Its not like Jimi couldnt play todays metal riffs and solos.

I'd like to see Kirk hammet or any other metal guitarist play like this lol

pleased?

BTW many guitarists write their own music as well and some sing too, (I don't see how singing changes anything though)

And I wouldn't really call Kirk Hammet a virtuoso.

Ok learn how to play like these guys then and learn how to "compose" like them as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IrWyZ0KZuk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t25AOSxZZkI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-OK7sS855M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qCQLyb0-mI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjfUMLeKd5E

Also playing fast and learning a few chords aren't the standards today, and even that takes a lot of time and effort. If you can actually learn how to play fast in a week or even a month than you must be a prodigy. You'll see how more skilled the guys are posted are than Hendrix if you actually try to learn them one day.

Look they can even paly Hendrix's songs and even better:

Jonas brothers are a fad. much like aqua, NSYNC etc, they'll probably be forgotten in 10 years or so.

Yea? Well im sure that you havent read up on jimi if you think he isnt special.

Look at some of these comments:

http://www.the-top-tens.com/lists/greatest-guitarists-ever.asp

I respect your opinion but you cant deny he influenced many guitarists.

cyberdarkkid

I cant believe Matthias Jabs is in number 13! :o

That list is one of the most ridiculous ones I've seen, it's should be called "The most successful Guitar Players". It doesn't even include many Jazz or ****cal Guitar players.

You do realize that people vote on who is the best :/

You say its ridiculous because your favourites arent at the top?

It should be renamed "favorite guitarists" or "most popular guitarists" then, those are personal opinions, however GREATEST guitarists lists should be based mostly on objective standards, not subjective opinions.

Yea, it's by far my favorite guitar album to listen to. So much skill involved between the three of them, I wish I could have been there.

What standards would those be? What people think great guitarist should be will differ from the next person.

Correct. In other words, no "greatest" guitarist list should exist IMO:P

Or there could be a "greatest" list without any specific ranking, in order to respect objective opinions.

Yes, this is true but impossible to judge really. I'm a ****cal guitarist who also does jazz guitar and it takes a hell of a lot of discipline to be a great ****cal guitarist. There's a lot more to ****cal guitar than just playing the notes on the paper, it's a very subtle instrument. Everything is taken into account for tone from nail shape, to how you pick, even where you pick the strings. Playing a note close to the fretboard sounds a lot different then playing near the bridge. Interpretation is the biggest thing, making a piece of music your own through dynamics, rubato, etc.

Jazz requires a lot of knowledge. You need music theory for jazz guitar or you will fail. You can't get by playing one scale the entire time, every chord has its own notes that voice them and you have to decide which of those notes to play, on the fly, that will sound pleasing as well as highlight the harmony. Improvisation is spontaneous composition. You have to know that the Locrian Mode is best used for a m7b5 chord and know how to use it. I used to write out harmonic analysis for tunes I did in my college jazz combo and band to help me.

Yes although, a "Most technical" or "Most Skilled" guitar players list would make much more sense.

Technical would work fine. However skilled would again boil down to nothing but subjective opinons...what is skill? The ability to play hyper fast technical riffs? The ability to make good emotional riffs? etc.

Well not even, a guitar list not including Andres Segovia is fail regardless. Without Segovia the guitar would still be the laughing stock of the musical world, we would still be seen as "the kid who never grew up" in a way. Segovia is the one who got well know composers to actually write music for guitar and got the instrument into institutions such as Peabody and Julliard.
