[QUOTE="cyberdarkkid"][QUOTE="Darth-Caedus"] Correct. In other words, no "greatest" guitarist list should exist IMO:P jazznate

Yes although, a "Most technical" or "Most Skilled" guitar players list would make much more sense.

Well not even, a guitar list not including Andres Segovia is fail regardless. Without Segovia the guitar would still be the laughing stock of the musical world, we would still be seen as "the kid who never grew up" in a way. Segovia is the one who got well know composers to actually write music for guitar and got the instrument into institutions such as Peabody and Julliard.

Who said such list wasn't going to include Segovia? ;)

That solo was pretty damn good, especially around the 3:45 mark. I still don't like Nile though. :P

I actually prefer the one in Sorrow, but I posted the most well-known one.

Yeah near the 3:45 mark is great! Not surprised you don't like them though. Nile has become one of technical death's more stagnant bands, which is kinda disappointing since their atmosphere and direction were more creative (at least when they started out) than a lot of other bands in the genre.

Well, I don't like tech-death to begin with. Morbid Angel and Gorguts are about as brutal as I can stand. My biggest complaint with tech-death is the unintelligable vocals. That's why I usually stick with melodic death metal.

pleased?

BTW many guitarists write their own music as well and some sing too, (I don't see how singing changes anything though)

And I wouldn't really call Kirk Hammet a virtuoso.

cyberdarkkid

Never heard of paul gilbert.

Anyways im tired of this discussion. Theres no way that we can prove that who is better than who. Its all about preference. Whether you like or not Jimi is one of the best.

Just a quick question what are today's standards? being able to play real fast of a few chords? I can learn that soon so would that make me the best of all time?

Ok learn how to play like these guys then and learn how to "compose" like them as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IrWyZ0KZuk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t25AOSxZZkI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-OK7sS855M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dNxshHlp4w

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJF5zB7YcXc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qCQLyb0-mI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjfUMLeKd5E

Also playing fast and learning a few chords aren't the standards today, and even that takes a lot of time and effort. If you can actually learn how to play fast in a week or even a month than you must be a prodigy. You'll see how more skilled the guys are posted are than Hendrix if you actually try to learn them one day.

Look they can even paly Hendrix's songs and even better:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fyQwuiyC_o

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojUtFyfnIJE

My problem with most of those songs is that you could put almost any chord behind those solos and they'd sound very similar. Technical ability is only flash imo.

In my own opinion I don't think any of them could write a 10 minute master piece in one chord like Hendrix did with machine gun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVvtIS2YGVI&feature=related

Or his Angel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-4NuPDpvgc(although it doesn't have much of a solo)

Thats my personal preference and to each his own.

If that's the guy from Nile, then yes. Pig squeals, like death core, and really deep growels, like tech-death don't sound like words to me.

While I enjoy Gorguts as well, I am also fond of a large majority of tech-death. The genre is split. There's the more creative, atmospheric, technical bands (ex. Anata) and then there's the traditional, sterile, technical bands (ex. Necrophagist). There's good bands in both camps, although there's some pretty bad ones in both as well (Brain Drill I'm looking at you :P).

Something both styIes in this genre have is that deep guttural voice, which is a turn off for some people but I personally enjoy. I have a very deep guttural voice myself (growls only; clean I can go fairly high).

here is ride the lightning with dave playing. THE YOUTUBE VID IS WRONG, DAVE DOSNT SING, JST PLAYS. this is the horsemen of the appocolypse demo that was just RTL and Fight fire with fire, i think the last or one of the last demo's with dave.

notice how its a tad faster, and the solo.. just BETTER.

Hampster shouldve got another few years of lessons from joe satchmo, cuz he's an embarrasment. satriani probly denies ever teaching him now. if you dont want to believe hammet is horrible. search for " dyers eve 2009" on youtube, he messes up on HIS OWN SOLO 3 times.. thats soo sad.

Marty Friedman (best solo maker / emotion) > Chris Poland ( amazing jazz player /great solo's) > Chris Poland (most technical, but i havnt seen anything amazing yet) > Dave Mustaine ( my favorite rhythm guitar player / very technical / best riffmaker ) > James Hetfield ( props for being the only non horrible player in metallica minus rob / good rhytm player ) > someone who just started playing guitar last month and barely practices > Kirk "wah wah pedal" hammet

Anyone can twiddle and tap the Pentatonic scale up and down and make it sound stellar with a Wah pedal and a wammy bar (with distortion). I prefer something a little more original.

no turd at all, metallica arnt even close to being in the top thrash metal bands, megadeth on the other hand is right up there. one only needs to listen to the first song on coroner's first album to see how bad metallica is.

and here the song is, technical as thrash gets!

im listening to yours, now listen to mine dude this isnt technical, the drums are just really fast, and these vocals are the worst ive ever heard, even worse than vio-lence. yeah bro this is just fast for the sake of being fast. wow.. im typing this while listening, the vocalist is just horrible. and i hardly ever complain bout vocals, this band right here and vio-lence are the only two i cant stad. the guitars here are not technical at all, nor even fast, the drums are making the song fast. its like sodom, slow guitars , fast drums.

no turd at all, metallica arnt even close to being in the top thrash metal bands, megadeth on the other hand is right up there. one only needs to listen to the first song on coroner's first album to see how bad metallica is.

and here the song is, technical as thrash gets!

REBORN THROUGH HATE - CORONER

Behold

im listening to yours, now listen to mine dude this isnt technical, the drums are just really fast, and these vocals are the worst ive ever heard, even worse than vio-lence. yeah bro this is just fast for the sake of being fast. wow.. im typing this while listening, the vocalist is just horrible. and i hardly ever complain bout vocals, this band right here and vio-lence are the only two i cant stad. the guitars here are not technical at all, nor even fast, the drums are making the song fast. its like sodom, slow guitars , fast drums.

I thought yours was good.

thats cuz coroner is bomb, every album except for the last is AMAZING, them and watchtower are imo the best of technical thrash, and i .. ok i might be blaspheming here. but i think coroner is better than megadeth. the only thing holding coroner back is the vocals, while not bad, they hold the band back from being amazing, theyre a little low volume and the singer isnt really special / unike to make it awesome. but the riffs.. OH THE RIFFS!

Fade to black hands down, nothing beats it. The best part about it, is that in the album version it never ends, so it seems like it just keeps going on forever. Seriously, nothing beats that song.

Master of Puppets solo isn't that great..but I'll list a few Buckethead - Too Many Humans Opeth - Ghost Reveries GnR - November Rain and the best solo ever is Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (ending)

As much as I love Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore is the man when it comes to the six string. He is considered to be one of the first neo-classical guitarists and he wrote the most famos riff ever.

One of his killer solos is Child In Time
