That's wrong. Religions can be based off anything.

So, I ask again. What would be the incentive for believing in such a religion?

GabuEx

Wrong Cults can be based off anything.

I dont think there's a religion where the afterlife is a 100% definitive "burn forever" even for believers.

The Cult of Cthulhu comes pretty close. :P

:P I didn't think cults counted as religion. Even still, the cult of Cthulhu is based off an H.P.Lovecraft creation, and I'm not going to take it very seriously.

[QUOTE="gaming25"][QUOTE="Nibroc420"] He said that "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail." So once your body shuts down, it's off. There's no more electricity going through your brain (known fact) and so you're unable to sense anything with your body, you're unable to think or breathe or talk. He used it because we dont know what happens to "living breathing organisms" when they die, no-one does.Nibroc420
I think I understand that part of your point better. But also, what was taken out of context of what I said about him being insulting?

He's not trying to be insulting, he's saying that there are many people who are scared of the "dark" that happens once our brain shuts off (following his previous metaphor about computers) and as such believe in an afterlife so there's little to fear. You seem to have twisted that into an insult because it doesn't suit your beliefs.

Its insulting for him to say that because there are many people who believe because of different things.

Is he supposed to address them all? No. It's a non issue bro.

Where is his statistics to even show that its why most people believe in an afterlife? A lot of people believe in an afterlife because of their relationship with Jesus Christ.

He was quoted by a reporter who was interviewing him. I dont think he had statistics to back up every statement he might make in the interview.

Also, no-one can have a "relationship" with a dead person.

Cults are freshly created religions with a single, charismatic leader. And Scientology was created around the fiction of L. Ron Hubbard... and it has millions of devoted followers, so I don't know how you couldn't take the Cult of *clears throat* Cthulhu seriously.

Because I doubt H.P. Lovecraft had any belief that the fictional being he had created was real. It's like that Star wars religion. We all know the Force is fictional, and that Obi-wan and Yoda were not real.

From a Christain point of view (which I am), he isnt dead. Anyway, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on him being insulting.

Disheartening but far from radical. I don't know if there's an afterlife, and neither does Stephen Hawking, but his doubts seem justified and his reasoning sound.

You know, if Stephen Hawking was saying that there was an afterlife, atheists would be making fun of his disability. I never see theists make fun of his disability despite disagreeing with him on a number of issues.

Anybody surprised? He's a human being. As with many people who have had a hard life, he wouldn't want to face the idea that his condition was brought on by a higher power for a specific purpose. Much less unsettling to think that it's all just randomness.

I've got to agree with Hawking in this case. While I don't discount the possibility of something "else" beyond our understanding, I think it is kind of arrogant of anyone to believe they are deserving of eternal life and bliss in an afterlife.

There is no evidence indicating any sort of continued existence post-death. The physical matter that makes up the brain (and the rest of the human body) and the chemical processes that occur therein are what constitutes a human being. Nothing more, and nothing less, although to say "nothing more" mutes the awesomeness of such a concept. When we die, it's most likely that our consciousness simply disappears. This is not a terrible fate, simply because you won't feel... pain, or hunger, or loneliness, or fear. A great deal of people hold a hope for an afterlife because they believe they will get to reconnect with lost loved ones. Carl Sagan wrote that the thought of seeing his parents again, if only to tell them a bit about his life, held such great appeal that he found it difficult at times not to succumb to faith. But in the end, science and reason is the language of the universe, and we should not spend our brief moment of time alive expecting something that is likely not going to happen.

I don't see how he's being an ass? He's just sharing his opinion. I don't think he's trying to state anything revolutionary, but rather he's just sharing his thoughts.

The only reason I can see why some of you people are getting so grumpy is that you're feeling threatened about your own existence/ideas of the afterlife/religion/whatever. It's his opinion, you have your own, calm down.

Necrifer

that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.

Stephen Hawking

Hm, yes. He could at least try to be a little more respectful of others' beliefs. That's the only problem I have with what he said.

Oh, give me a break. Let me guess, another offended Christian from an Atheistic belief? So hypocritcal.

As for Hawkins' view... I"m sure there are many people that have a more logical perception on life side with him. He pretty much summed it up for me.

I don't think he's quiet thought this through. How can he be sure of a thing he has never experienced?

Just because one doesn't see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I'm probably wrong, but doesn't Occam's razor apply here? The existance of an after life would require many new assumptions (the existance of God, the existance of an immortal soul, a supernatural plane of existance, etc), while nothingness after death would require no new assumptions. Thus, the lack of an after life is the simpler of the two theories and therefore the more logical one.

If you can say yes or no 'logically', there obviously a logical explanation either way. I was asking for the logical opinion for the idea that "yes, there is an afterlife".

What is the logical side to there being an afterlife?

raynimrod

Logically one can SAY neither yes nor no. I'm not sure why you misread my post.

Can say yes or no to what? Your post makes no sense.

Just because one doesn't see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
