Wow... I'm really starting to think most American's don't even understand why America was even formed anymore. But then again, there are a lot of ignorant people all around the world, from all walks of life... so this isn't a surprise.

Do most of those people in the crowd even know why they're there, or are they just there because its something to hate and is threatening the sanctity of God's America?

foxhound_fox

Just like a small group of militant muslims gives there religion a bad name, I don't think it's fair to say that these people represent america. You can't combat generalizations and stereotypes by using them in return.

Huh as a black guy...I can't believe that...really America?

How does a crowd of misinformed people represent america?

Well to be honest that is the Fearful Fifth we are talking about. They are representative of the 20% of America that is still intolerant, like having a gangrenous limb :(

it would be seen as its sole intention is to annoy other users. i guess you missed that part

The fact he asked you for it after your baseless claim kind of blows the sole intent part away...

What about the 80% that aren't? Do we just forget them and ignore their contributions? I'd say there are far more people that are tolerant than intolerant. In fact, I suspect this country may be more tolerant than others since most other countries don't have the racial make up of the US.

Obviously a couple bothering the innocent man mean the whole of everyone who does not support the Mosque are bigots. Just like how a group of Islamic terrorists that flew airliners into two buildings and the Pentagon mean the whole religion are extremists and bigots. Oh WAIT...

i would get mega modded if i started naming names.

Excuses. If you are going to say people are America bashing and call people hypocrits, why not name the posters and remove any doubt of your claims? You say you feel bad for those intolerant anti-muslim people who assumed a non-muslim was a muslim and then screamed disrespectful things at him? :| That's incredible.

And if you talking about GabuEx I sure he's fairminded enough to ask why you would say that.

i have never said anything of the sort but hay that wont stop you from telling me what i did not say but what i meant.

It's just frustrating to see people label this as "america". One bad apple does not spoil the bunch. I'd say there easily exist hundreds of tolerant people for every hate filled person. Nor is hate and racial prejudice some kind of unique american trait. We live in a country where races are mixed. Where people are exposed to other races, cultures, ethnicities, etc. on a daily basis. Unlike many other countries, are population is not relatively homogenous but fairly diverse. With that diversity will come inevitable conflicts, but our country is full of mostly good people IMO. People just like to find reasons to bash the US, but to generalize it in this way is erroneous.

Exactly. People seem to give so much press to groups like the Klu Klux Klan and nazi groups and ignore other groups such as the Peace Corps and such.

Every single one of them is just as bad as these people!". Rather I see some people saying that this is a disgraceful display of a group of Americans with some saying the entire anti-Community center group is similar to these people, and from what I've seen of those against the community center that isn't exactly as outrageous as all muslims are terrorists.

Well, that article is...For starters.

Ridiculous Snipes_2 :|The article points out the insidiousness of all of this Anti-muslim fervor. You have not read the article if you really believe that. And don't go quoting partial phrases, if you are going to quote block quote to provide more context to the discussion.

"America: If we don't like something, we'll bombard it!" "They even played "Born in the USA," Bruce Springsteen's famous anthem about how awesome the United States is! Meanwhile, a bunch of hippie losers protested across the way and tried to teach people about "religious tolerance," or whatever. Guess what, hippies? ""A mannequin wearing a keffiyeh, a traditional Arab headdress, was mounted on one of two mock missiles that were part of an anti-mosque installation. One missile was inscribed with the words: "Again? Freedom Targeted by Religion"; the other with "Obama: With a middle name Hussein. We understand. Bloomberg: What is your excuse?""(No word on whether or not he voted for Obama, as one of the very reasonable and intelligent-sounding anti-"Mosque" protestors speculates.) "You are a black man wearing a skullcap, after all! You are definitely a pro-Mosque, anti-freedom Jihadist! Why, aren't you, in fact... Osama Bin Laden??" That first comment in particular. The rest of the quotes are making fun of the Protesters, which is just as bad.

I don't have a problem with people calling out anti-Americanism or the people criticizing America, but I don't see how it's nearly as bad. If I read this and apply the knowledge to say "I think these protesters are being idiotic", it's only bringing the blame to those who were responsible. If I read this and apply the knowledge to say "Look at these protesters, America is being idiotic", I bring in millions of totally unrelated people into the blameworthy circle.

Like clockwork...I said BLOCK QUOTE. You always just quote a bunch of sentences out of order and then rattle off some hollow claim in order to create an the appearance of an argument. If you cannot block quote a single continuous paragraph and draw a real logical argument using critical thinkingwhat is the point?

I'll go on record and say that you incapable of doing so because you knowingly made a false claim and lack the evidence to present a comprehensive argument to the discussion.

What is wrong with these people? Just because the religion a terrorist group believes in is getting a mosque - when I'm sure there are many other in the city of NY - this is no way for the public to react. Yet, if someone tried to build a catholic church in Afghanistan, it would probably get the same reaction. Crazy ****ing world.

Wasn't saying you can't do something, in fact it's starting to seem like you're telling me what to do, you pretty clearly posted that to annoy me or insult me. So you keep going on about these people saying America as a whole is bad for the actions of a small group...yet you've yet to show any proof of this. I mean Snipes asks for specific posts all the time in topics and for the most part they are given yet you refuse. The only logical thing to assume here is that you're whole argument holds no water and you're just saying with no backing.

While I do appreciate you looking and pointing to evidence of your claim andcan understand how you came to that opinion I honestly don't think that holds enough weight to be considered bashing.

Perhaps bashing isn't the correct term, but it really isn't anything better. It was clearly a negative expression that encompassed the entire country, not just the actual morons at this little event.

Perhaps bashing isn't the correct term, but it really isn't anything better. It was clearly a negative expression that encompassed the entire country, not just the actual morons at this little event.

"The mosque is bad" is a majority opinion. So "being ashamed of America" if you disagree seems very valid.

Well, just saying, I have seen some people say things such as "I am ashamed of America right now". Hellfury360 is an example, right on the first page.

I see it more as an off hand comment. I know I've said I'm ashamed to be Canadian because of Justin Bieber without really meaning it. I was thinking more someone posting something reasonably though out rather than just a generic response that you could find in almost any thread.

Majority =/= entirety, nor even close to it. The statement in question would encompass the nation as a whole. So, no. It is not valid.

Perhaps so. But when one says that they're embarrassed of their country because of Justin Beiber, there is certainly a bit of obvious sarcasm implied. This one has me somewhat more skeptical, as for some reason or another, people tend to take these sorts of threads seriously.

Well reasoned point.

I will say that many who have never seen or experienced what racism/xenophobia is (whether it be commited againsted them or around them) feel as if this was something only to be read about in history books, and these blatant shows of bigotry are a shock. So shocking because they felt that America as a whole was past this sort of craven, foolishstuff.

Perhaps so. Regardless, it's not any sort of portrayal of our country that I would like to endorse, as it really isn't accurate. There are some idiots here and there, but the vast overwhelming majority are not.

While I have no intention of getting involved in the rest of this messy debate, is this really a fair interpretation? "America" is a pretty ambiguous term; saying it can only be applied to the entirety would render any usage in the aforementioned sense utterly impractical. It would seem much more reasonable to assume "being ashamed of America" is referring to the Zeitgeist rather than each and every individual.

70% is not a slight majority. It's quite a significant majority.

And yes. It is very valid because it shows that most of the country is intolerable toward muslims. It's not as bad as 100% but anything over 1% is sad. And anything THAT high is shameful to the country.

Then the choice of words was poor, as numerous people have been irked by that specific phrasing.

It's a clear majority, but regardless, there are about 100 million people in the country whom were grouped in with the rest. It is a sizable number of people, far too many to be overlooked. Even one is shameful to the country, but the amount that exists doesn't make the entire country shameful. To say otherwise is certainly throws a clearly incorrect misrepresentation of the country as a whole. A gross generalization, bordering on the level of absurdity of those whom generalize Muslims as a whole due to the actions of some Islamic fundamentalists.

If you guys are referring to the poll that I've heard referenced recently, the whole thing was shoddily done anyway. The question of, "Do you disapprove of the mosque being built near Times Square" has numerous interpretations.

Disapprove how? Do you think it should be illegal? Do you think it's indecent? Inconsiderate? Unwise?

Quite frankly, if I was asked that question I wouldn't know how to respond without clarification. It seems like it was done precisely to bait the participants into creating twistable and inflammatory statistics.

If there was no such thing as modern communication, I.E internet, TV, Cellphones etc. I'm pretty sure racist morons would still be lynching folk. We need to find a cure for stupid, since these people are outbreeding the rest of us and soon they'll take over like a plague! *looks at the posters on the internet* My god... the morons already have us outnumbered, I have risked everything and lost. Kiff old friend, if that wicker basket I like should survive the slaughter have it sent to my PO box.

Spot on! Muslims citizens are just as much a citizen as anybody else. Why should they be persecuted like that? It wasn't okay in the past and it's not okay today.
