I'll go with Star Wars I guess. Mostly because of the first movie (part 4 or whatever), but the first half of the second movie was pretty good too. And Clone Wars was actually pretty enjoyable once you got past the horrible writing and acting.
LOTR, I dunno. The second one was great, but the first and third were just good. Hobbits are kind of boring and the end of the third movie just dragged on way too long. Elijah Wood just doesn't have any screen presence and is a very weak lead character IMO.
The best person to decide this is the guy with elements of both in his username. I'll take Lord of the Rings because they knew when to quit.Legolas_Katarn
To be fair that's because they were working from existing source material and there was nothing else to do unlike SW which was an original idea. If LOTR was oriinial, hollywood would milk that bastardo like nothing else. Plus the Hobbit is coming out soon so...

Nothing more to do? Good god, there's an incredible amount more to do :PEdit: Pedantic-ness aside, I see your point.
I like the Tolkien books. I've read them cover to cover repeatedly. The movie version is okay. But, the movie took too many liberties and deviated from the book too many times for me.
I don't have that problem with the Star Wars saga. The movies came first and the books based off them followed. There's consistency that I crave when books make the move from paper to film.
I like both equally. But, I give the nod to Star Wars for consistency.

Yeah Tolkien created a whole world and culture and history but making films about that would deviate so much from the actual LotR it would be pointless.

If the movie followed the book religiously it would have been 12 hours long.

Lol I did a SW marathon before with some mates. Tried to do a LOTR one but had a power cut!I went on a SW marathon a few days ago.
The last time i did a LotR marathon was about 2 months ago.
Extended cuts, all 3 films. About 12 or so hours
[QUOTE="lightleggy"]so you are comparing the force to making a bunch of "the galaxy's best soldiers" get scared by a single guy with a blaster (and each one of those soldiers was carrying more than a blaster PLUS the armor)Sharpie125
No? All movies require some level of suspension of disbelief, and they make it pretty obvious stormtroopers are no more than faceless, goose-stepping goons. If that's something you absolutely couldn't get over, as minor as it is, I am extremely curious as to what you'd prefer towards the issue of hero-beats-henchmen plural.
Lord of the Rings has it too. If you single SW out for stuff like that, that is some serious selective memory you have.
at least the bad guys in LOTR are far more competent, and they fight (the good guys manage to repel them tho) unlike star wars in which every storm troopers misses everyone no matter how close they are. im not dumb, im obviously not going to say something "OH LOOK THIS GUY CAN PULL PEOPLE WITH HIS MIND AND CHOKE THEM!!! IN A SCI FI MOVIE!!! UNACCEPTABLE!!!!" im not complaining about the force and its lack of realism, im complaining of how every bit of the star wars movies feel cheap, and no, I dont hate the franchise for that single scene, I was just pointing out an example, but theres like over 300000 dumb scenes filled with dumb dialogue and acting in the rest of the movies, that was my whole point. only a die hard star wars fans wouldnt feel it was cheap.I wanna say Star Wars but at least Lord Of The Rings didn't have one poopy movie...chilly-chill
I assumed we were just talking about the original 3 films.
I never factor in the second 3 when talking Star Wars...
Harry Potter over both.foxhound_fox
Agreed. LOTR is a close second and Star Wars is just meh for me. Harry Potter had such a significant impact on my childhood though, it can't be ignored.
Man, I don't get the hate for the prequel Trilogy of Star Wars.
I mean, sure, Jar Jar Binks is a screwup and the films don't match up to the excellence of the Original trilogy. But I thought it was thoroughly interesting to find out what happened before Luke Skywalker's time.
And I honestly think that Anikan Skywalker is a better character than Luke anyway.

What's wrong with Harry Potter?I still need to watch through the last two Lord Of The Rings movies. When I tried to watch them I was younger and didn't have as much of an interest in them as I do now.
I'm thinking I'll read The Hobbit for the movie's release! It'll be hard because I'm a really slow reader.

What's wrong with Harry Potter?I don't want to get into it, it has too big a fanbase, abhorrent as that is.
Its just sad to me that HP is a part of people's childhood in a positive way. I was unfortunate enough to grow up with it.
The acting was down right embarrassing, too much CGI. The only thing good about the prequels were Qui Gon, and the lightsaber fights....that's it.Man, I don't get the hate for the prequel Trilogy of Star Wars.

Meh, i liked how it linked the stories together with only a few continuity errors.
LotR for me. RotK is still one of my favorite movies of all time. cant wait to see how the Hobbit turns out

Well technically its casting's fault.
star wars... i like the light saber battles, besides from that i don't really see whats so special, while lord of the rings is one of the best books ever

Nobody did.
Yeah, I'm not sure where he was going with that. :?Being influenced by mythology != being literature? Now THAT is an unfounded suggestion. And Harry Potter being a film doesn't get rid of the deus ex machina, flat characters, poorly-constructed world, and terrible ending. Sorry, but a movie based on literature is generally better than a movie based on children's books in story-telling value.ShuLordLiuPeiI'm glad I don't have to suffer through your arrogance and can enjoy the things I like rather than what I'm expected to like due a superiority complex forcing me to think a certain way.

If he likes harry potter than he likes that the best..Why the need to bash what people enjoy sheesh..
Well i love both series ..How ever the new series is to be desired..The original star wars is stil the best in the series..Why maybe because it was done with heart..It was some thing new and fresh..Was some thing no one has seen before..
Lord of the rings is just spectacular..Its some thing we wont see again in many years..Maybe the hobbit will just be as good..Although i cant see it..Nothing will come close for another 20 years maybe..
Im hopeful some one does my favorite books of all time..Twilight of autum, winter and spring...Raistlin, caramon, sturm, an company..If done right maybe that can beat out lord of the rings its just my favorate books of all time..It should be made..Hopefully one day before i die some one decides to do it..

If the movies followed the books religiously they wouldn't be movies. It'd be an ongoing TV series that runs for a few seasons.

Blame George Lucas. He can't direct actors for sh*t. Liam Neeson, Ewan MacGregor, Natlie Portman, Samuel L Jackson, Ian McDiarmand - all established as fine actors themselves and all come across like bad soap opera actors in those movies.
Plus there's only so much you can do with sh*tty dialog.

It wasn't, but it was also 35 years ago, and in the two decades or so between that and 'the Phantom Menace' Lucas seem to lose whatever abilities as a director he had. Plus on the original movies he had other writers working with him and people around him will to call him on bad ideas, thus helping to filter his crap. For the prequels he had a bunch of yes-men around him.
