Blame George Lucas. He can't direct actors for sh*t. Liam Neeson, Ewan MacGregor, Natlie Portman, Samuel L Jackson, Ian McDiarmand - all established as fine actors themselves and all come across like bad soap opera actors in those movies.

Plus there's only so much you can do with sh*tty dialog.

worlock77

New Hope waasn't bad...

It wasn't, but it was also 35 years ago, and in the two decades or so between that and 'the Phantom Menace' Lucas seem to lose whatever abilities as a director he had. Plus on the original movies he had other writers working with him and people around him will to call him on bad ideas, thus helping to filter his crap. For the prequels he had a bunch of yes-men around him.

Exactly. You need people close to you to tell you something's sh!t. His ego, understandably, became too big in the prequels.

Best movies: Lord of the Rings. Those movies are amazing, albeit Fellowship left a bit to be desired. The battle of Helms deep is one of the most amazing, if not THE most amazing battles shown in cinema and the giant battle throughout Return is fantastic as well.

Best books: Harry Potter. Sorry, but as much as I love the Lord of the Rings movies I seriously can't bring myself to trudge through the horribly written books. Tolkien was amazing for the world he created, but he was such a horrendously dull writer. The Harry Potter books on the other hand had me hooked everytime. People can hate on the series all they want but the books are fantastic (and only get better with each installment) and it is probably the most important book series to come out in my life time.

Best games: Star Wars. Really, the Star Wars series is the ONLY ONE of these three that have put out even remotely good games unfortunately. The Lord of the Rings universe could be amazing but they never seem to pull it off for whatever reason...

only a die hard star wars fans wouldnt feel it was cheap.lightleggy

If a movie feeling "cheap" creates this much of a stink for you, I don't think you can ever watch a sci-fi movie past the 90s. Or stuff from the classical Hollywood era made on budgets of a few million. Or the silent era, where one million dollars financed ten productions. And yes there are silent films out there that I would put above both LoTR and SW.

Die hard fans and those who had Star Wars in their childhood can agree on just how inluencial those movies are. For everyone else, way to go against the grain.

The Star Wars universe is more enjoyable to me, the LOTR were better quality movies, but dem lore. Sith Jedi, The games, the comics, the books, the cgi movies are so much more fun for me.

The Two Towers and Return of the King are good games. But I agree, it doesn't even compare to Star Wars in that area.

...except for their RTSs. In that area, LOTR kicks SW's a**.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds was just Age of Empires with new skins (why does a droid army need food? Only the SW:GB team knows), and while Empire at War had amazing space battles, the game absolutely fell apart on the ground.

Battle for Middle Earth was pretty good (even though the balance was completely screwed: Rohan >>> everyone else, once they got even one cavalry unit rolling), but War of the Ring was where it was at: it had balance, excellent heroes, a manageable economy, generous unit cap... and Helm's Deep, of course.

Is it franchise vs franchise, or movies vs movies? Either side can get stomped just depends what we're judging on.

Lol whilst it's bait/a joke, I found the first book/film to be okay. I read the next two and was appalled with their awful-ness. CBA with the other one.

This question is one of the hardest I've ever answered, and I've said both answers in the past, but I think I have to give the edge to Star Wars. LOTR is a fantastic tale, and I think I even like the LOTR movies slightly better than the original Star Wars trilogy, but I give the edge to Star Wars due to the large amount of quality expanded universe content. I might answer differently a year from now when I'm going through a LOTR kick from The Hobbit.

As much as I love both, Lord of the Rings has superior overall quality. If the new trilogy didn't exist, I would have chosen Star Wars.

Are you talking about the same Expanded Universe that was basically invalidated by the prequel trilogy?

I tried reading some of the new books, but it became clear that with the multiple authors writing novels with wildly unequal quality, I'd stop enjoying them as I got more critical of them.

I would watch both with my father, we would spend a lot of time together watching Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I wasn't a big fan of the first LOTR movie, but Return of the King is in my opinion, better than any Star Wars movie.

BUT the LOTR movies were better.

Star Wars. A good movie series, with great games, great books written by great authors. Lord of the Rings. Great movies, based on a wonderful story found in books written by an awful author. Not saying that LotR is bad, it's a great story, but I've read history textbooks more engaging than the writing of Tolkien... and I find history really boring.

Lord of the Rings were much more deep movies while the original Star War trilogy felt more like a fun sci-fi adventure movie.
