Feel free to blame that specific individual for it's actions, that way it's just waiting for more troubles to happen. And yes, they do happen quite often but they don't make it the news quite often.
Secondly, I dislike the training and college money for the fact that this results in many young men enrolling in the military. These are people who are not fully developed psychologically and trauma's are bound to cause a ton of damage. I favor superior after war support and special honors for them or their family as motivational tools more then the current stuff. Fact of the matter is that better support means less dropouts.
On your last point,I'd rather have men chosen by draft then kiddo's running around in the battlefield. On the other hand Í am against most wars and military actions so the entire military should be smaller anyway.

The military hires ad agencies to make their TV spots, although they do screen the ads before they are posted and allow actual troops instead of actors be in them. Blame the ad agency.
Anyway, if somebody is too stupid to know that joining the Army means you might go to a combat zone they're probably too dumb to pass the ASVAB in the first place. That pretty much solves the problem you have with the ads not mentioning the dangers of war. You don't see McDonald's saying eating too many Big Macs can make you fat in their ads but common sense should reveal that being a possibility.
The military doesn't employ professionalpsychiatristsat every military processing station to screen for people who may be mentally handicapped. They just do a full physical on them and make them fill out a medical questionnaire with the threat of jail time and/or fines if they lie about past medical conditions. If you want them to putpsychiatrists at each processing station be prepared to pay more in taxes.
As for the draft, I would prefer people who actually want to be there watching my back than draftees. I would probably have more confidence in the 19-year old who joined out of high school because his grandfather fought in Vietnam than the rich kid who is only there because his dad didn't know a Senator powerful enough to get him out of the draft. Also, a smaller military means larger workloads or longer tours on the few who are still in.
There's a difference between having heard that a combat zone is bad and actually knowing what the situation is like. Which is my point, being in the military is a constant stress, many don't realize that.Note that the % chance to die as a military is actually quite low, so apparently the situation itself or the killing of others is the problematic aspect that causes the psychological symptoms. The experience remains mostly horrid.
Adding to this matter is the fact that the military promote young men to enroll in the military, who are more susceptible to trauma and related psychological problems. This doesn't require psychological assessment, it simply requires the common sense to not employ these young in battle. Furthermore the after-war support remains horrid, which only enlarges the problems by even more. I don't see many veterans or family members promoting their experiences claiming that it was worth it.
Obviously draftees is a horrid method of getting military personal, I simply dislike the current system oriented towards the young very much because of it's adverse effects.
