I think their outlook on life/society is a complete waste of time. Don't like something about life/society? Work to change it. I don't care about how they look/dress, but in general they are depressing to be around.nocoolnamejimBeing apathetic about life isn't exclusive to "emos".
They're all a bunch of loonies, at least the ones I've seen. They think they are all so non conformist, yet they all conform to the whole emo thing which consists of spray on jeans, shirts 2 sizes too small and a black fringe covering their face with a red streak through it, snake bites, and sulking in the mall listening to my chemical romance or whatever!!
It's so gay that it makes me sick.rom11
WTF? I dont get it. I agree they look ridiculous ... but what has that got to do with sexual orientation, and why does it make you feel sick? Are some clothes really that offensive to you? Are gay people that offensive to you? I dont get it!
Anyway, I wish I really knew what emo's were. Are they:
A) A fashion trend. In which case no I dont like it personally but fashion is fashion ... matters not in the least. I prefer goths ... and I do think it just plain doesnt suit guys to wear those clothes/have those hair cuts. But each to their own.
B) Musical genre. In which case again Im not personally a fan ... just sounds like whinney metal to me. But again thats just opinion. Also "emo" was a music genre AND fashion trend before this one came about. Jarvis Cocker ... "Eels" etc. Funny how names get regurgitated.
or C) a sub-culture where its deemed "cool" to be depressed and to self harm. Self harm is a serious issue that affects people that genuinely have a problem with depression. Emulating that when you dont actually have depression is not just stupid but also counter-productive to supporting people that do it for a real reason.
D) Something else im missing?
I dont really think C is that common and for most people its either a fashion or a music thing ... in which case fair enough. "Emo" looking people are still very common in the UK. Ive never found them to be anything other than "there". They dont bother me, they dont vandalise property or harass people and they generally seem pretty social.Cant see the problem personally.

I hope I never hear the words emo and metal in the same sentence again.-Panjera-Is it just a personal distaste for emo or are you trying to deny that Emo is strongly influenced by metal? Just wondering. Oh and: EMOMETALEMOMETALEMOMETALEMOMETAL. Does this make you dizzy? :P

Sure, they might have heavy guitars, solos, heavy drums etc, but emo is definately not whiney metal.
I hope the fad dies before my girls get to dating age...because if one of those sissies walked into my house I would grab him by his greasy hair and toss him out.
I will say this, though, if she brings home some guy with his pants hanging down or "bling" on, he too is getting tossed.

I think it's just a plain stupid trend. People looking for attention...otherwise they wouldn't paint their faces like a depressed clown and screw up their hair. As for the music, I don't like it at all, although there are things I find worse.
It's all a matter of opinion really. I hate it.
So what if you have a sunny disposition on life, doesnt make you better than anyone. This is all a battle of opinion and nothing makes your opinion of how things should be better than anyone else's. elfimisYou forget that in my world I only state facts. Everything else that people say is opinion. I made a smart.

Absolutely not, i just dont put people down because they are socially different than myself.
What are some of the emo bands you dislike? Just wondering...I think it's just a plain stupid trend. This sounds like a Dictator. So when your daughter is of age(which i feel IS the fathers choice till she is 18, in USA anyhow) you wont accept the guy she chooses to love and share her life with based solely on his appearance and tastes in current cultural trends simply because you dont like them yourself?

There is nothing wrong with his ideas. The point of parenting is to guide your kids to be upstanding, contributing members of society. One way to ensure they do so is by NOT associating with any male who wears tight pants and eyeliner. And yes, it does sound like a dictatorship. That is how a family works. You don't "vote" on issues in your family. The parents pay the bills, so they call the shots.

Absolutely. And so you know...while my children live under my roof, it IS a dictatorship...and I am the dictator. My job as her father is to make sure she developes into a responsible and well adjusted adult, and part of that is ensuring the friends she surrounds herself with are respectful, well adjusted people.[QUOTE="elfimis"][QUOTE="dnuggs40"]I hope the fad dies before my girls get to dating age...because if one of those sissies walked into my house I would grab him by his greasy hair and toss him out.

So just because someone has different tastes than "society" they can't be a god-fearing, tax-paying, American citizen. That is simply stereo-typing. And a smart parent doesnt simply say, i pay the bills so i call the shots cause all that does is press the children to rebel against the best wishes of the parents.

Well from what i can tell dnuggs40 is a good father who just wants his daughter to go out with a normal, respectful young man.[QUOTE="elfimis"][QUOTE="DJ_Novakain"] There is nothing wrong with his ideas. Well, there is something wrong with them if they fear a non-existing being. And no, a parent shouldn't rule with an iron fist, but a child needs to know who the boss is, which seems to not happen with a lot of kids these days.Well not to brag but I do put the Ed in Education.Hahahaah, thats rich. Im so glad someone else here agrees! A parents job is not to dictate but to teach ... to teach their kids to think for themselves and not make ridiculous judgements about people by the way they appear. I mean how many films, books, documentaries, tv programs, talk shows, magazines, games, news reports (I wont go on) need to be rammed down peoples throats before this kind of prejudice truly stops?
I mean seriously ... in movies for decades now (almost any kind of movie from kids movies to serious epics to action thrillers) people who make such judgements are almost always protrayed as ignorant individuals because its not productive to society to view things in such a shallow way. But in the real world this still makes for good parenting techniques? I can truly truly understand wanting to protect your child, but by dictating who they can see by looking at their clothes and the presence of make-up as opposed to true merits in life (education, morals, being nice to people no matter how they look or which sub-culture they subscribe to etc) ... what kind of example is that setting?
PS As much as it seems so im not actually attacking anyone personally ... I just felt the need to rant and direct it at someone about this sort of thing. Im certain youre not as ignorant or as much of a dictator as a few (fairly light hearted) forum messages can make you out to be. I just dont like that this does genuinely happens out there in the world ... still
I don't believe in their existence.JandurinYour actually on to something. I to have never seen the rare "emo" appear out in public.
